CBSE Class 10 Exam Pattern 2026-27: Marks and Paper Structure

The CBSE Class 10 exam pattern 2026-27 gives each main subject 100 marks: 80 for a three-hour written paper and 20 for internal assessment. Every student sits the first board exam in February to March 2027, and the second exam in May is optional.

This guide explains the structure of the papers, the marking rules, how the internal marks work and what the numbers mean for your time in the exam hall. The section layouts below follow recent sample papers. Open the 2026-27 sample papers on the CBSE academic website to confirm the exact layout for each subject.

Marking Scheme and Passing Marks

There is no negative marking, so leaving a question blank earns nothing while a sensible attempt can earn part marks. CBSE requires at least 33% in each subject. Many guides read this as 27 out of 80 in theory and 7 out of 20 in internal assessment. Treat those figures as safe minimums and confirm the rule in the latest CBSE notice.

What This Pattern Means for You

  • Section A is quick marks: Twenty one-mark questions in three hours is a small time cost. Do them first and carefully.

  • Case-based questions need reading time: Each is worth 4 marks and is built on a passage or data. Practise reading quickly and underlining what is asked.

  • Long answers reward steps: In Mathematics and Science, show each step, because marks are awarded for method.

  • The 20 internal marks are a fifth of the subject: Missing them can undo a good theory score.

Time Management in the Exam Hall

  1. First 10 to 15 minutes: Read the whole paper and mark the questions you are sure of.

  2. Next 2 hours: Go section by section, keeping long answers for when your hands are warm.

  3. Last 30 minutes: Check calculations, units and diagrams.
