What to know before the December 2026 term

  • Syllabus 2022 only: All current ICMAI study material, MCQ banks, model question papers and practice test papers for Foundation are published under Syllabus 2022. Older pages may still show the 2016 papers, so follow the 2022 structure.

  • One day, two sessions: All four papers are written on a single day. Papers 1 and 2 share the morning session and Papers 3 and 4 share the afternoon session.

  • No negative marking: Every question should be attempted, because a wrong answer costs nothing.

  • Overseas centres: The December 2025 notice listed Bahrain, Dubai and Muscat as overseas centres, with overseas candidates applying offline with a demand draft.

CMA Foundation eligibility

Educational qualification

ICMAI accepts candidates who have passed Class 10 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board, or who have passed the Senior Secondary (10+2) examination or an equivalent recognised by the Central Government. Candidates awaiting results can take provisional admission. ICMAI's eligibility page gives provisionally admitted students 36 months to convert to regular status.

Age limit

ICMAI's current eligibility page does not set a minimum or maximum age for the Foundation course.

Who can skip Foundation

Candidates who have passed a qualifying examination for direct admission to the CMA Intermediate course, such as a graduation or another qualification listed by ICMAI, are exempt from Foundation.

Registration, fees and how to apply

There are two separate payments. First you register for the Foundation course, then you fill in the exam form for the term you want to sit.

Fee

Amount

Foundation course fee (Indian students)

Rs. 6,000 (as reported from ICMAI's fee revision effective from the December 2021 term; confirm on icmai.in)

Exam form fee, inland candidates

Rs. 1,500

Exam form fee, overseas candidates

US $100

Late fee on exam form

Rs. 500

The exam form fees above are from the official December 2025 Foundation notice and are reported unchanged for December 2026.

Steps to register online

  1. Open the student portal: Go to the online admission link on icmai.in, which leads to the eICMAI student portal.

  2. Choose the Foundation course: Enter your qualification, registration type and email, then verify with the OTP.

  3. Fill in the form: Add personal and academic details and choose your coaching mode.

  4. Upload documents: Keep scanned copies of your Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets or certificates and a recent photograph ready.

  5. Pay and save: Pay online and download the confirmation for your records.

  6. Fill in the exam form later: Once registered before the term cut-off, submit the exam form and fee for your chosen term before the deadline.

Common reasons for trouble are registering after the term cut-off, a mismatch between your name and your mark sheets, and missing the exam form deadline even after registering. ICMAI also runs a fee waiver scheme for meritorious students with 80% or more in Class 12, with a limited number of seats each term.

What this means for you

  • About 72 seconds per question: Each session has 100 questions in 120 minutes, across two papers.

  • Attempt everything: With no negative marking, an unanswered question is simply lost marks.

  • Watch your weakest paper: A strong total does not help if one paper falls below 40 marks.

Passing criteria and result

  1. Minimum per paper: At least 40% of the marks in each paper, which is 40 out of 100.

  2. Minimum aggregate: At least 50% of the total marks of all papers, which is 200 out of 400.

  3. One sitting: Both conditions must be met in the same term. ICMAI's Council can vary the pass marks at its discretion.

  4. Result: Results are published on icmai.in and the eICMAI portal, usually within about four weeks of the exam. ICMAI issues a mark sheet for Foundation.

There is no competitive cut-off at this level. Passing depends on your own marks, not on how other candidates perform. The CMA Foundation passing marks and pass percentage page covers reported pass trends by term.

After Foundation: the CMA path

Passing Foundation makes you eligible to register for the CMA Intermediate course. Under Syllabus 2022, Intermediate and Final each carry 800 marks, and the course also includes soft and technical skills training, an industry-oriented training programme and 15 months of practical training. Foundation is where you build the accounting, law, maths and economics base that those later papers rely on.

How to prepare for CMA Foundation

Concepts first, paper by paper

Start with Paper 2 and Paper 3, because accounting and quantitative topics need daily practice. Read Paper 1 law topics section by section and Paper 4 economics in short, regular sittings. Use the ICMAI study material as your base text.

Move to MCQs early

The exam is entirely objective, so start solving MCQs within the first few weeks. ICMAI publishes MCQ banks, model question papers and practice test papers for Syllabus 2022, and these show the level of questions you will face.

Pair them with ICMAI's own model papers to understand the real difficulty level, and keep short CMA Foundation study notes for the final revision.

Pass trend reference

ICMAI does not routinely publish Foundation pass percentages with each result. Figures reported for 2019 put the pass rate between about 75% and 80%, and reported passed counts in recent December terms have been in the range of about 12,000 to 12,500 candidates. Treat these as context only. Your target is simple: clear 40 in every paper and 200 overall, with a safe margin.

Any CMA Foundation mock tests, notes or courses on Testkart appear above this guide, so you can plan your practice around the four papers.
