CMA Foundation Eligibility 2026: Qualification, Registration and Exemptions

CMA Foundation eligibility is set by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) under the Cost and Works Accountants Regulations, 1959. The entry bar is low by design: the Foundation course is meant for school leavers, so admission is based on Class 10 or 10+2, with provisional admission for students still awaiting results.

What trips students up is not the qualification but the timing. To sit a particular term, you must register for the course before that term's cut-off date and then submit a separate exam form. This page covers both, along with who is exempt from Foundation and goes straight to Intermediate.

Educational qualification

ICMAI's Foundation eligibility lists two routes. You can join if you have:

  • Class 10 route: Passed Class 10 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board or institution.

  • 10+2 route: Passed the Senior Secondary (10+2) examination of a recognised board, or an examination recognised by the Central Government as equivalent. ICMAI's admission page also lists the National Diploma in Commerce and the Diploma in Rural Service among accepted qualifications.

ICMAI's eligibility page sets no minimum percentage and no stream restriction for Foundation. Science, commerce and arts students can all join. Commerce students will find Papers 1 and 2 more familiar, while science students often find Paper 3 easier.

Provisional admission

Candidates awaiting their results can apply for provisional admission. ICMAI's current eligibility page gives provisionally admitted students 36 months to convert from provisional to regular status. Keep your final mark sheet ready to upload as soon as it is issued, and check the conditions printed with your registration before you fill in an exam form.

Age limit

ICMAI's current Foundation eligibility page does not specify a minimum or maximum age. Older articles may quote an age condition from earlier rules, so rely on the current ICMAI page and your registration confirmation.

Registration cut-off and timing rules

Admission to the Foundation course is open throughout the year, but each exam term has a registration cut-off:

Exam term

Register before

Exam form window (indicative)

December 2026

31 July 2026 (reported extended to 4 August 2026)

Without late fee until 14 October 2026; with Rs. 500 late fee from 15 to 21 October 2026

June 2027

31 January 2027

To be announced in the June 2027 time table

Tentative dates come from ICMAI's standing cut-off rule and the reported December 2026 schedule, and they can change. Track the Admission and Examination sections of icmai.in and your registered email.

Regulation 20B also requires a Foundation candidate to have been enrolled for postal, oral or e-learning tuition for at least six months before the month of the exam. That is why registering just before an exam does not let you sit it.

Who can skip Foundation

ICMAI exempts some candidates from Foundation and lets them register directly for the Intermediate course. Its eligibility page lists, among others:

  • Direct-entry qualifications: Candidates who have passed a qualifying examination for direct admission to Intermediate, such as a graduation or another qualification listed in ICMAI's Annexure VI.

  • Students of other professional bodies: Candidates who have passed the ICSI Foundation, or the ICAI Intermediate or CPT, as listed by ICMAI.

If you hold one of these, check the full list on the ICMAI eligibility page before paying the Foundation fee. The Intermediate direct-entry rules also require 10+2.

Who is not eligible to sit a term

  • Late registration: Registering after the term cut-off moves you to the next term.

  • No exam form: Course registration alone does not enrol you for an exam. You must submit the exam form and fee every term.

  • Unconverted provisional status: Not converting a provisional admission to regular within the allowed period can lead to cancellation.

  • Lapsed registration: Registration has a validity period, and you may need to revalidate it with a fee if you take too long to pass. Check the validity printed on your registration.
