CMA Foundation Syllabus 2026: Paper-wise Topics and Weightage
The CMA Foundation syllabus is set by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). The December 2026 and June 2027 terms follow Syllabus 2022, which has four papers of 100 marks each, split into sections and modules with fixed percentage weightages.
This page lists every module in all four papers with its official weightage, shows where to start in each paper, and ends with a phased plan to cover the whole syllabus before the exam. The weightages and topic lists below are taken from ICMAI's Syllabus 2022 curriculum and the official Foundation study material, so you can use them as a checklist.

Key changes to know
Syllabus 2016 is gone: ICMAI now publishes Foundation study material, MCQ banks and practice papers only under Syllabus 2022. Older pages may still show the 2016 paper names and structure, so follow the 2022 papers listed above.
Cost accounting enters at Foundation: Paper 2 includes a 30% cost accounting section, built around cost classification and the cost sheet.
Business communication is tested: Paper 1 gives 20% to business communication, including internet and social media communication.
New environment topics: Paper 4 includes PESTEL analysis and the VUCAFU dimensions of the business environment.
Paper 1: Fundamentals of Business Laws and Business Communication
Module | Weightage | Topics to cover |
|---|---|---|
1. Introduction | 10% | Sources of law, legislative process in India, legal method and court system, primary and subordinate legislation |
2. Indian Contract Act, 1872 | 30% | Essentials and types of contract, offer and acceptance, void and voidable agreements, consideration, legality of object, capacity, free consent, quasi and contingent contracts, performance, indemnity, guarantee, pledge, agency, e-contracts and e-signature, discharge, breach and remedies |
3. Sale of Goods Act, 1930 | 20% | Definitions, transfer of ownership, essentials of a contract of sale, conditions and warranties, performance of the contract, rights of an unpaid seller |
4. Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 | 20% | Characteristics, promissory note, bill of exchange and cheque and their differences, crossing and its types, dishonour of cheques (Section 138) |
5. Business Communication | 20% | Features and process of communication, types, internet-based communication, social media dos and don'ts, writing and drafting, intercultural communication, barriers, legal aspects, use of graphics and references |
Start with: the Indian Contract Act. At 30%, it is the heaviest module in the paper and its concepts recur in the Sale of Goods Act. ICMAI's question-setting guidelines for Foundation say case laws are not to be asked in the law paper, so focus on sections, definitions and rules.
Paper 2: Fundamentals of Financial and Cost Accounting
Module | Weightage | Topics to cover |
|---|---|---|
1. Accounting Fundamentals | 30% | Accounting frameworks and principles, capital and revenue items, accounting cycle, journal and ledger, cash book and petty cash book, bank reconciliation statement, trial balance, adjustment and rectification entries, depreciation (straight line and diminishing balance), bad debts and provision for doubtful debts |
2. Accounting for Special Transactions | 15% | Consignment, joint venture, bills of exchange (excluding accommodation bills and insolvency) |
3. Preparation of Final Accounts | 25% | Income statement and balance sheet of a sole proprietor; receipts and payments account, income and expenditure account and balance sheet of a not-for-profit organisation |
4. Fundamentals of Cost Accounting | 30% | Meaning and scope of cost accounting, its link with financial accounting, cost, cost centre, cost unit and cost driver, classification of cost as per CAS 1, preparation of a cost sheet |
Start with: accounting fundamentals, then final accounts. Together they carry 55% of the paper and every other topic depends on clean journal entries. Cost accounting is a single module but carries 30%, so give it dedicated time rather than leaving it for the end.
Paper 3: Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics
Section A: Business Mathematics (40%)
Arithmetic (15%): Ratio, variation and proportion; simple and compound interest, time value of money and annuities; arithmetic and geometric progressions; time and distance.
Algebra (20%): Set theory and Venn diagrams; indices and logarithms; permutations and combinations; quadratic equations.
Calculus in business (5%): Basic calculus, revenue and cost functions and simple optimisation.
Section B: Business Statistics (60%)
Statistical representation of data (5%): Diagrams, frequency distribution, histogram, frequency polygon, ogive and pie chart.
Central tendency and dispersion (15%): Mean, median, mode, range, quartile deviation, mean deviation, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and Karl Pearson's and Bowley's coefficients of skewness.
Correlation and regression (15%): Scatter diagram, Karl Pearson's coefficient of correlation and regression lines.
Probability (15%): Basic concepts and applications of the probability theorems.
Index numbers and time series (10%): Construction and uses of index numbers, components of a time series and trend by moving averages.
Start with: statistics, because Section B carries 60% of the paper. Central tendency, correlation and probability each carry 15%. ICMAI's guidelines say questions in this paper can be formula-based at the basic level, so a clean formula sheet pays off here.
Paper 4: Fundamentals of Business Economics and Management
Module | Weightage | Topics to cover |
|---|---|---|
1. Basic Concepts | 15% | Utility, wealth and production; demand and its determinants, law of demand, price, income and cross elasticity, demand forecasting; supply and elasticity of supply; equilibrium; law of variable proportions and returns to scale; cost concepts in the short and long run |
2. Forms of Market | 20% | Pricing under perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, oligopoly and duopoly; price discrimination |
3. Money and Banking | 20% | Types and functions of money, functions of banks, commercial banks and the central bank, credit control measures, money market |
4. Economic and Business Environment | 15% | PESTEL analysis; VUCAFU dimensions (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity, fear of the unknown, unprecedentedness) |
5. Fundamentals of Management | 30% | Introduction to management, stewardship and agency theories, planning, organising, staffing, leading, coordination and control, organisation structure and delegation, leadership and motivation theories, decision making |
Start with: management, the largest single module at 30%, and then forms of market and money and banking at 20% each. These are mostly theory, so short daily reading with MCQ checks works better than long weekend sessions.
Where the marks sit: overlaps to plan around
Area | Where it appears | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
Cost concepts | Paper 2 (cost accounting) and Paper 4 (cost of production) | Learn fixed, variable, average and marginal cost once and apply in both papers |
Bills of exchange | Paper 1 (Negotiable Instruments Act) and Paper 2 (accounting for bills) | Study the legal definitions alongside the accounting entries |
Percentages and compounding | Paper 3 (interest and annuities) and Paper 2 (diminishing balance depreciation) | Practise percentage and compounding calculations daily |
Communication | Paper 1 (business communication) and Paper 4 (management functions) | Read the two together as one theory block |
Is there an interview or written paper?
No. CMA Foundation has no interview, practical or descriptive paper. The entire assessment is the four MCQ papers above, and your result depends only on those marks.
How to cover the CMA Foundation syllabus
Weeks 1 to 6, core concepts: Cover accounting fundamentals and final accounts, the Indian Contract Act, and central tendency and dispersion. Read one economics or management chapter a day alongside.
Weeks 7 to 10, finish the syllabus: Complete cost accounting, special transactions, the Sale of Goods and Negotiable Instruments Acts, the rest of statistics and algebra, and the remaining economics modules. Start ICMAI's MCQ bank chapter by chapter.
Weeks 11 to 13, topic tests: Take short topic-wise tests and timed paper-wise sets. Keep an error log of every wrong answer with the rule or formula you missed.
Final 3 to 4 weeks, full mocks: Take two-paper session mocks under two hours, analyse them the same day, and revise from your error log and short notes.
The official curriculum is on the ICMAI Syllabus 2022 Foundation page.
