CMA Foundation Exam Pattern 2026: Papers, Marks, MCQs and Timing

The CMA Foundation exam pattern is simple on paper: four objective papers, each with 50 multiple choice questions worth 2 marks, written in two sessions on one day. The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) conducts the exam offline at centres, with answers marked on an OMR sheet, and the December 2026 term follows the same structure.

What makes the pattern demanding is the time and the passing rule. You answer 100 questions in each two-hour session, and you must clear a minimum in every paper as well as in aggregate. This page sets out the official structure, then turns it into a practical plan for time and attempts.

These timings are from ICMAI's December 2025 Foundation notice and are reported unchanged for the December 2026 exam on 13 December 2026. ICMAI's question-setting guidelines plan for about one hour per paper, but within a session you control how you split the two hours between the two papers.

Key changes to know

  • Syllabus 2022 papers: The four paper titles above replaced the Syllabus 2016 papers. Older pages may still show the earlier paper names, so follow ICMAI's current time table.

  • Offline OMR format: ICMAI's June 2023 Foundation notice announced offline, OMR-based centre exams, and later notices, including December 2025, continue this format. Articles from earlier terms may describe a different mode.

  • Higher exam fee: The inland exam form fee in the December 2025 notice was Rs. 1,500, up from Rs. 1,200 in the June 2023 notice.

Marking scheme and negative marking

Each correct answer earns 2 marks. ICMAI's Foundation notices state clearly that there is no negative marking, so a wrong answer and a blank both score zero. There is no sectional cut-off inside a paper; the minimums apply to each paper as a whole and to the total.

What the pattern means for you

  • Time per question: 100 questions in 120 minutes gives you about 72 seconds per question across a session. Calculation-heavy items in Papers 2 and 3 will take longer, so theory questions need to move faster.

  • Cost of a guess: With no negative marking, a guess can only help. Never leave a bubble empty on the OMR sheet.

  • The weakest paper decides: 40 marks means 20 correct answers out of 50 in each paper. A score of 250 overall still fails if one paper is at 38.

  • Pairing matters: Paper 2 (accounting) and Paper 3 (maths and statistics) are the calculation papers, and they fall in different sessions. Plan each session so the calculation paper gets the larger share of time.

Passing criteria and result

Under Regulation 20C of the Cost and Works Accountants Regulations, 1959, a Foundation candidate passes by obtaining, at one sitting, at least 40% of the marks in each paper and 50% of the total marks of all papers. The Council can vary these at its discretion. In marks, that is 40 out of 100 in every paper and 200 out of 400 overall. ICMAI issues a mark sheet for the Foundation result.

These are illustrative figures only. They show why balanced preparation across all four papers matters more than a high score in one.

Time management and exam-day strategy

  1. Split each session: A workable split for the morning is about 50 minutes for Paper 1 and about 65 minutes for Paper 2, with a few minutes left to check the OMR. In the afternoon, give Paper 3 the larger share in the same way. Adjust the split to your own strengths after a few mocks.

  2. Two-pass method: On the first pass, answer every question you can solve quickly. On the second pass, return to the long calculations.

  3. Bubble as you go: Fill the OMR sheet in blocks of ten rather than at the end, so you do not run out of time with answers only on the question paper.

  4. Fill every bubble: In the last five minutes, mark a best guess for anything left blank.

  5. Carry what the admit card asks for: Read the instructions that come with the admit card for permitted items, reporting time and ID requirements.

Older pages may still show a different format or fee, so follow the latest Foundation time table and programme in the ICMAI Examination section.
