FCI Cut Off : How Selection and Cut Off Work

FCI cut off is not a single number. Merit is prepared for each post, and for Category III it is prepared zone-wise and category-wise, so the marks that secure a place in one zone and category can fall short in another. This page explains how selection works across FCI posts, what affects the cut off, and how to set a realistic target.

We have deliberately not listed numerical cut-off tables here. Figures for earlier cycles circulate online, but different pages attach different cycle years to the same numbers, so we cannot treat them as clearly sourced. Official merit lists and result notices are published on the FCI recruitment portal, and that is where to check any figure before relying on it.

How FCI Merit Works

The way a cut off is applied depends on the stage structure of each post. The table summarises the process as reported for earlier cycles.

Post group

What decides the merit list (as reported)

Assistant Grade III

Phase II score, with Phase I used as a screening stage, followed by document verification

Manager

Online test performance, then interview, then training; weightage is stated in the notification

Stenographer Grade II

Online test performance plus qualifying skill test

Junior Engineer

Online test performance, then document verification

Watchman

Written test merit plus qualifying physical endurance test, region-wise

In the 2022 Category III cycle, FCI announced the Phase II result with merit lists by zone on 2 June 2023, for all posts except Stenographer. This shows that results can arrive in stages and by post.

What Affects the Cut Off

  • Difficulty of the paper: A harder Phase II usually brings lower raw scores for everyone.

  • Vacancies in your zone: More posts in a zone generally lowers the competition per seat.

  • Number of applicants: High application numbers push the cut off up.

  • Category and reservation: Each category has its own merit line within a zone.

  • Sectional or qualifying marks: Where a notification sets minimum marks for a stage, you must clear them in addition to overall merit.

How to Set Your Target

Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat last year's figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them rather than a bare pass.

  1. Pick your zone and category early: Compare past merit lists for your own zone, not national averages.

  2. Work back from Phase II: Since Paper I is 120 marks with one-fourth negative marking, accuracy of 75 percent or more is a sensible practice goal.

  3. Track sectional scores: Do not let one weak section drag the total, especially in timed sections.

  4. Use mocks as a benchmark: Compare your score trend over at least five full-length tests, such as those published by educators on Testkart, rather than one result.
