FCI Exam Pattern : Phases, Marks and Timing
The FCI exam pattern follows a staged design: an online Phase I screening test, an online Phase II test, and then a post-specific stage such as an interview, skill test or physical test. Knowing the pattern early helps you decide how to split your time between speed practice and subject depth.
This page sets out the pattern reported for the 2022 Category III cycle and shows how other post groups differ. Because FCI can change sections, timing and weightage between cycles, treat the figures as a reference and confirm them in the current notification.

Phase I Pattern
Phase I is a common test for Category III posts. It has four sections of 25 questions each, with 15 minutes allotted to each section.
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
English | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes |
Reasoning | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes |

General Awareness | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes |
Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
Some Manager-focused summaries show an older Phase I with 30 English, 35 reasoning and 35 numerical aptitude questions over the same 60 minutes. Older pages may still show that version, so follow the official notification.

Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
English | 25 | 25 | 20 minutes |

Paper II
Paper II applies to posts with a specialist subject. In the 2022 Category III cycle it was reported for Accounts, Technical and Hindi posts only, with 60 multiple-choice questions of 2 marks each.
Post | Subject | Time |
|---|---|---|
Assistant Grade III (Accounts) | Commerce, accounting and finance | 90 minutes |
Assistant Grade III (Technical) | Agriculture-related science groups | 90 minutes |
Assistant Grade III (Hindi) | Hindi language, literature and translation | 60 minutes |
Assistant Grade III General and Depot candidates were reported to appear for Paper I only. The notification states the language of the papers and any sectional timing rules.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Each correct answer earns the full mark for that question, and unattempted questions earn nothing. One-fourth of the marks was reported as deducted for each wrong answer in Phase I and in Phase II Paper I. For example, a 1-mark question costs 0.25 marks when answered wrongly. The rule for Paper II and for Manager papers should be checked in the notification, since summaries disagree.
What the Pattern Means for You
Marks per question: Each question is worth 1 mark in Paper I, so accuracy across all sections matters more than a single strong section.
Cost of a wrong guess: Four wrong answers wipe out one correct mark, so avoid pure guesses.
Sectional timing: Timed sections mean you cannot borrow time from a strong subject, so build speed in every section.
Where effort goes: General studies has the most questions in Paper I, so a steady current affairs habit pays off.
Later Stages by Post
Post group | Stages after the online tests (as reported) |
|---|---|
Manager | Interview and training |
Assistant Grade III | Document verification |
Stenographer Grade II | Skill test (shorthand and typing) and document verification |
Junior Engineer | Document verification; engineering paper details as per the notification |
Watchman | Written test followed by a physical endurance test, notified region-wise |
Time Management Strategy
Start with your strongest section: Bank the sure marks first where the interface allows it.
Cap each question: Leave any question that takes more than a minute and return only if time remains.
Reserve the last minutes: Use them to revisit marked questions you can narrow to two options.
Practise in the real format: Take sectional tests with a countdown timer, then full-length tests, such as those educators publish on Testkart.
Always cross-check the pattern with the notification on the official FCI recruitment portal.
