FCI Syllabus : Common Topics for All Posts
The FCI syllabus is built around a common core of English, reasoning, numerical aptitude and general awareness, with an additional post-specific paper for specialist roles. Because FCI recruits for Managers, Junior Engineers, Assistant Grade III, Stenographers and Watchmen, the first step is to separate what every candidate must study from what depends on the post.
A note on sources: FCI names the test sections in its notifications, but the topic lists below are built from those sections and from questions asked in earlier cycles. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list. Confirm the sections for your post on the official FCI recruitment portal.
Table of Contents
Syllabus at a Glance
Stage | Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
Phase I | English, Reasoning, Numerical Aptitude, General Awareness (25 each) | 100 | 100 |
Phase II, Paper I | English (25), Reasoning (25), Numerical Aptitude (25), General Studies including computer knowledge (45) | 120 | 120 |
Phase II, Paper II | Post-specific subject (Accounts, Technical, Hindi and similar) | 60 | 120 |
These figures reflect the 2022 Category III cycle as reported by third-party sources. Manager papers differ in sections and timing, and the Manager page covers them.
Key Changes to Know
Four sections in Phase I: Recent cycles show equal sections of 25 questions, while older Manager summaries list three sections of 30, 35 and 35 questions.
General studies is heavier in Phase II: The 2022 Category III Paper I gave general studies, including computer awareness, the most weight at 45 questions.
Post-specific papers: Specialist posts add a second paper, so a generalist plan alone will not be enough.
Older pages may still show a previous pattern, so follow the official notification.
Phase I Syllabus
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
English | Reading comprehension, error detection, sentence improvement, idioms, cloze test, para jumbles | Reading comprehension and error detection |
Reasoning | Puzzles, syllogism, blood relations, direction and distance, coding-decoding, alphabet and number series | Coding-decoding and blood relations |
Numerical Aptitude | Simplification, percentage, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, number series, data interpretation | Simplification and percentage |
General Awareness | Current affairs, Indian history, polity, economy, geography, basic science, static GK | Current affairs of the last six months |
Numerical aptitude and reasoning reward practice more than reading, so give them the most daily time in the early weeks. General awareness is easiest to improve through a steady habit rather than a last-minute push.
Phase II Syllabus
Phase II repeats the same four subjects with more depth, then adds computer knowledge inside general studies.
English, Reasoning and Numerical Aptitude
English: Passage-based questions, grammar-based error spotting, vocabulary in context and sentence rearrangement.
Reasoning: Longer puzzle sets, seating arrangement, inequalities and logical deduction.
Numerical Aptitude: Data interpretation sets, ratio and proportion, mixtures, averages, and time, speed and distance.
General Studies and Computer Knowledge
General studies: Current affairs, Indian economy, agriculture and food-policy basics, geography and polity.
Computer knowledge: MS Office, networks, the internet, databases and basic computer terms.
Post-Specific Papers
The second paper depends on the post. The table lists the subject areas reported for Category III posts. Manager streams have their own papers, covered on the FCI Manager page.
Post | Paper focus | Core topics |
|---|---|---|
Assistant Grade III (Accounts) | Commerce and finance | Accounting, auditing, taxation, commercial laws, financial management |
Assistant Grade III (Technical) | Agriculture and allied sciences | Agriculture, botany, zoology, chemistry, physics (group-wise) |
Assistant Grade III (Hindi) | Hindi language and translation | Hindi literature, translation, official language topics |
Assistant Grade III (General and Depot) | No separate subject paper reported | Common papers only |
Overlap Between Phases
Area | Phase I | Phase II | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
English | Basic grammar and comprehension | Same topics, harder sets | Study once, then raise difficulty |
Reasoning | Short sets | Longer puzzles | Practise puzzles from the start |
Numerical Aptitude | Arithmetic basics | Data interpretation and mixed sets | Build speed in Phase I topics first |
General Awareness | Current affairs and static GK | Adds computer knowledge | Add computer topics from week 6 |
Interview, Skill Test and Physical Test
These stages have no academic syllabus. The Manager interview tests subject understanding and suitability for the role. A Stenographer skill test measures shorthand and typing speed. A Watchman physical endurance test measures running and jumping standards, which vary by region. Check the notification for the exact norms.
How to Cover the Syllabus
Weeks 1 to 6: Finish arithmetic basics, core reasoning topics and English grammar, with a daily reading habit.
From week 3: Add current affairs for 30 minutes a day and keep monthly notes.
From week 6: Begin topic-wise tests and 20-minute sectional tests, such as those educators publish on Testkart, and start the post-specific paper.
From week 10: Move to full-length mocks, same-day analysis and error-log revision.
Topic-wise tests tell you quickly which chapters are weak. Educators publish tests, courses and notes on Testkart, and the pages linked here show what is currently available for this exam. Pair timed practice in the current pattern with previous year papers, where you can find them, to understand real difficulty.
