GUJCET Exam Pattern 2027: Papers, Marking Scheme and Timing

The GUJCET exam pattern is set by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) for its Gujarat Common Entrance Test, which ACPC Gujarat uses for degree engineering, B.Pharm and D.Pharm admission. GUJCET is a one-day, offline, multiple-choice test with three separate papers: a combined Physics and Chemistry paper, a Mathematics paper and a Biology paper. Which papers you write depends on your Class 12 Science group.

This page explains the paper-wise structure, timings, marking scheme, what the numbers mean for your strategy, and how your GUJCET percentile feeds into ACPC merit. It is based on the GUJCET 2026 cycle, held on 29 March 2026. GSEB has not yet notified the 2027 pattern, so check the official notice when it is released.

In GUJCET 2026, 77,182 candidates registered in Group B, 58,507 in Group A and 382 in Group AB, according to GSEB's result highlights. For pharmacy aspirants, this means the Biology group is the largest pool you compete in.

GUJCET Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

Treated as wrong (as reported)

The deduction of 0.25 mark per wrong answer was reported from GSEB's 2026 marking scheme. Some pages still state that GUJCET has no negative marking. Follow the information booklet for your cycle, and until it is out, prepare as if the deduction applies.

Your raw score for a paper is the number of correct answers minus one quarter of the number of wrong answers. For example, if you attempt 36 of 40 Biology questions and get 31 right and 5 wrong, you score 31 minus 1.25, which is 29.75 out of 40.

What the Pattern Means for You

The numbers in the pattern tables translate directly into strategy:

  • Every subject is worth the same: Physics, Chemistry and your third subject each carry 40 marks. A weak subject cannot be hidden behind a strong one.

  • Time per question is tight: In each paper you get about 90 seconds per question. There is no time for long derivations, so practise short methods and elimination.

  • Guessing has a real cost: One wrong answer cancels a quarter of a correct one. If you can rule out two of four options, an educated guess is usually worth it; a blind guess usually is not.

  • Physics and Chemistry share time: Most students find Chemistry faster. Banking time in Chemistry gives you room for numerical Physics questions.

  • Accuracy beats attempts: Because GUJCET is converted into a percentile within your group, a careful 34 out of 40 often helps more than a rushed 38 attempts with several errors.

Cost of guessing, worked out

Situation

Expected marks from one guess

Advice

Blind guess among 4 options

About +0.06

Close to zero; skip unless the deduction is removed

Guess after eliminating 1 option

About +0.17

Small gain; attempt only if time allows

Guess after eliminating 2 options

About +0.38

Worth attempting

These are simple expected values that assume each remaining option is equally likely. In practice, students who guess under time pressure often do worse than this, so build the habit of marking only what you can justify.

Question Style and Difficulty by Subject

GSEB does not publish an official difficulty rating or chapter weightage for GUJCET. The notes below describe the general style of recent papers so you can practise the right kind of question; treat them as guidance, not as an official breakdown.

Subject

Typical question style

What to practise

Physics

Short numericals on standard formulae, plus conceptual statement questions

Formula recall, unit checks, sign conventions in optics and circuits

Chemistry

NCERT statements, reaction outcomes, named reactions, short physical chemistry numericals

Line-by-line NCERT reading, reaction charts, exceptions in trends

Mathematics

Direct application of standard results, with some lengthy calculus items

Speed in integration, matrices and probability; shortcuts for standard forms

Biology

Recall of NCERT facts, diagrams, examples, and match-the-following or statement pairs

NCERT text, tables and diagram labels; examples given in each chapter

Across subjects, the common thread is the NCERT Class 12 textbook. Questions rarely go beyond it, but they often test small details, so close reading matters more than extra reference books.

Language of the question paper

GUJCET is offered in Gujarati, English and Hindi, and you choose the medium in your application form. Pick the language in which you studied Class 12 science terms, because technical words in a less familiar language slow you down. Use the same medium for your mock tests so the terms feel familiar on exam day.

Exam-Day Timetable and OMR Rules

GUJCET 2026 ran in a single day from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Paper

Time (2026)

Who appears

Physics and Chemistry

10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

All groups

Biology

1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Groups B and AB

Mathematics

3:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Groups A and AB

A Group B candidate finishes at 2:00 PM, while a Group A candidate has a gap between the first paper and Mathematics. Use that gap to eat, rest and glance at a formula sheet, not to start new topics.

Because answers are marked on OMR sheets, a few habits protect your score:

  • Fill details first: Seat number, booklet set and other required fields should be filled carefully before you start answering.

  • Bubble in batches: Mark answers on the OMR every 10 to 15 questions so you do not run out of time with answers only in the booklet.

  • Check the question number: A skipped question can shift every later bubble by one row. Check the number each time you skip.

  • Use the right pen: Follow the hall ticket instructions on the type of pen and how to darken bubbles.

After the 2026 exam, GSEB also opened a facility to apply for a copy of the OMR sheet, which lets candidates check their own marking against the answer key.

From Marks to Percentile to ACPC Merit

GUJCET does not produce a direct rank. GSEB reports your subject-wise marks and a percentile rank, which shows the share of candidates in your group who scored at or below you. ACPC then combines this with your Class 12 board theory percentile.

Course route

Board theory percentile

GUJCET percentile

Applies to

Degree and diploma pharmacy (2026-27)

50%

50%

95% of government and grant-in-aid seats, 50% of unaided seats

Degree engineering (2026-27, as reported)

50%

50%

95% of government and grant-in-aid seats, 50% of unaided seats

The pharmacy weightage is taken from the ACPC admission notice for 2026-27. The engineering figure is from reports of the ACPC engineering notice; confirm it in the ACPC brochure. The remaining 5% of government and grant-in-aid seats go by JEE (Main) rank for engineering, and by NEET or JEE (Main) rank for pharmacy.

Illustrative merit example

Suppose a Group B student has a board theory percentile of 88 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and a GUJCET percentile of 92. With equal weight, the merit score works out to (88 + 92) divided by 2, which is 90. This is a simplified illustration of the weightage; ACPC's exact method, rounding and tie-breaking rules are in its admission brochure.

The lesson from the example is that a strong GUJCET percentile can lift an average board result, and a careless GUJCET can pull a strong board result down. Prepare for both together.

Time Management Strategy

Physics and Chemistry paper (120 minutes)

  • First pass in Chemistry, about 45 minutes: Attempt direct NCERT-based questions quickly and mark the rest.

  • Physics pass, about 55 minutes: Start with modern physics, semiconductors and direct formula questions, then move to longer numericals.

  • Review, about 20 minutes: Return to marked questions in both subjects, and check OMR bubbling.

Reverse the order if Physics is your stronger subject. The key is to decide the split before exam day and test it in mock tests.

Biology or Mathematics paper (60 minutes)

  • Biology: Most questions are recall-based, so aim to finish the first pass in about 35 minutes and use the rest for careful review of statement-type and matching questions.

  • Mathematics: Do quick questions from matrices, determinants, probability and linear programming first, then calculus and 3D geometry. Leave lengthy integrals for the end.

For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt GUJCET mock tests on Testkart that follow the paper-wise timing, and use the section-wise analysis to see where your minutes go. Pair them with previous year papers to understand the real difficulty level.

Common Pattern Myths on Older Pages

Because GUJCET pages are often copied across years, several errors keep appearing. Older pages may still show these, so follow the official notice:

  • "No negative marking": Reports of the 2026 marking scheme show a 0.25 deduction per wrong answer.

  • "60:40 merit weightage": The ACPC pharmacy notice for 2026-27 states 50:50 between board theory percentile and GUJCET percentile for the main seat share.

  • "GUJCET is only PCM": There is a full Biology paper, and Group B is the largest group.

  • "Physics and Chemistry are separate papers": They are one 120-minute paper with one OMR sheet.

  • "Biology paper is 50 minutes": The 2026 timetable gave Biology a one-hour slot, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
