HCL Exam Pattern 2026: Test Stages and Timing
The HCL exam pattern for fresher hiring under the AMP programme has three tests followed by interviews: a cognitive test, a coding or technical test, and a Versant English test. This page sets out the pattern in two clearly separated parts, what HCLTech publishes and what candidates and preparation sites report, so you can plan your time without relying on guesses.
Table of Contents
HCL exam pattern at a glance
Stage | Format | Duration | Qualifying rule |
|---|---|---|---|
Cognitive test | Numerical, verbal, reasoning | About 90 minutes on the official page; other sources report total time of 60 to 95 minutes, so it varies by source | Must clear to proceed |
Coding or technical test | Coding and technical questions | 60 to 90 minutes | Must clear to proceed |
Versant English test | Speaking and listening | Not published | Score of 46 to 56 (B1 level) to qualify |
Technical and HR interviews | Interview | Not published | Final selection |
Official stage-wise pattern
Stage 1: Cognitive test
This is a test of numerical, verbal and reasoning ability that the official page lists at about 90 minutes. Other sources report total time of 60 to 95 minutes, so the time varies by source. HCLTech does not state the number of questions, the split between sections, or whether each section is timed separately.
Stage 2: Coding or technical test
The second test is described as a coding or technical test of 60 to 90 minutes. The exact number of problems and the languages allowed are not published on the page.
Stage 3: Versant English test
Only candidates who clear the cognitive and coding tests move to Versant. It tests English speaking and listening, and HCLTech states that a score of 46 to 56, described as B1 level, is required.
Older pages may still show a single short aptitude test, so follow the official page and your drive notice.
Reported pattern from other sources
Several preparation sites describe an older or shorter aptitude test. These figures are not from HCLTech and are not confirmed.
Section | Questions reported | Time reported |
|---|---|---|
Quantitative aptitude | 15 | 15 minutes |
Logical reasoning | 15 | 15 minutes |
Verbal ability | 15 | 15 minutes |
Technical or computer fundamentals | 15 (some report 30) | 15 minutes (some report 30) |
Reports disagree on total time, with figures from 60 to 95 minutes and a few higher, so total time varies by source. Some also mention a separate coding section with two problems. They also report separate timers per section, where unused time does not carry over. Because the sources conflict, use these only to practise sectional speed, not as the official format.
Educators publish tests, courses and notes on Testkart, so you can check what sectional practice is currently available for HCL while you work on sectional speed.
Marking scheme and negative marking
HCLTech does not publish marks per question or any negative marking rule. Third-party sites report that there is no negative marking, but this is unconfirmed. Until your invitation says otherwise, answer carefully rather than guessing blindly, and check the instructions screen before you begin.
What the pattern means for you
Three gates, not one: The cognitive and coding tests filter first, and Versant is a separate qualifying step. A strong coding score does not make up for a weak English score.
The cognitive test is long: A test of around 90 minutes, or 60 to 95 minutes depending on the source, needs steady pace. Practise full-length sets so stamina is not a surprise.
Sectional pressure is likely: If your drive uses sectional timers, you cannot borrow time from an easy section. Train to leave and return to hard questions.
Versant needs speaking practice: Reading a book silently will not prepare you. Practise speaking aloud and recording yourself.
Interviews and upgrades
After Versant, AMP candidates face technical and HR interviews. HCLTech states that the top 10% of Ascend candidates may be assessed further through interviews, hackathons or technical tests for the Momentum and Polaris tiers. The format of these upgrade rounds is not published.
TechBee pattern
TechBee is a separate programme for Class XII pass-outs. Its official site FAQ lists registration, a basic Career Aptitude Test on quantitative, logical reasoning and language ability, a Versant test and a face-to-face interview. Duration and question counts are not published there either.
Time management and test-day strategy
Read the instructions page: Note timers, navigation rules and any marking details before you start.
First pass for easy marks: Solve quick questions first and mark long ones for later.
Set a time per question: In a long test of around 90 minutes, avoid spending more than a couple of minutes on one problem.
Test your setup: For proctored online tests, check camera, internet and a quiet room in advance.
