IBPS RRB PO Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Mains and Interview Guide
The IBPS RRB PO exam pattern for Officer Scale I has three stages: an online Preliminary exam, an online Main exam and a Common Interview. IBPS conducts both online exams under CRP RRBs XV, and the interview is coordinated by Nodal Regional Rural Banks with NABARD and IBPS. The pattern in the 2026 notification is the same as last cycle, with sectional timing in both exams and a choice of English or Hindi in the Mains language test.
This page sets out every test with its questions, marks and time, the exact negative marking, how the Prelims and Mains scores are used, and how the 80:20 final merit works with a worked example. It also turns the numbers into a time plan you can use in mocks. For topic lists, see the separate syllabus page.
IBPS RRB PO Exam Pattern at a Glance
Stage | Format | Marks | Duration | Counted in final merit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Preliminary exam | Online, objective, 2 tests | 80 | 45 minutes | No, qualifying only |
Main exam | Online, objective, 5 tests | 200 | 120 minutes | Yes, 80 per cent weightage |
Common Interview | Personal interview | 100 | Not specified | Yes, 20 per cent weightage |
Preliminary Exam Pattern
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | 40 | 40 | 25 minutes |
Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 40 | 20 minutes |
Total | 80 | 80 | 45 minutes |
You must clear the minimum cut-off in both tests. IBPS then shortlists an adequate number of candidates in each category, depending on requirements, for the Main exam. Prelims marks are not added to the final merit, so their only job is to get you through.
Main Exam Pattern
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | 40 | 50 | 30 minutes |
Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 15 minutes |
General Awareness | 40 | 40 | 15 minutes |
English Language (4a) or Hindi Language (4b) | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 50 | 30 minutes |
Total | 200 | 200 | 120 minutes |
You take either 4a or 4b. The English Language test is set in English and the Hindi Language test in Hindi. Each Main test has its own minimum score, and you must also score high enough on the total to be called for interview.
Medium of the Exam
Except for the language test, papers are offered in English, Hindi and, in many states, the official language of that state. You choose the medium in the application form, and the option depends on the state you apply for. A few examples from the notification:
State | Medium of exam |
|---|---|
Andhra Pradesh | English, Hindi and Telugu |
Gujarat | English, Hindi and Gujarati |
Karnataka | English, Hindi, Kannada and Konkani |
Odisha | English, Hindi and Odia |
Uttar Pradesh | English, Hindi and Urdu |
Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan | English and Hindi |
If the English and translated versions differ, the English version prevails. Choose the medium you read fastest, not the one you think looks better.
How the Prelims and Mains Differ
Feature | Prelims | Mains |
|---|---|---|
Number of tests | 2 | 5 |
Questions and time | 80 in 45 minutes | 200 in 120 minutes |
Marks per question | 1 in every test | 0.5 to 1.25, depending on the test |
Role in selection | Qualifying for the Mains | Decides interview call and 80 per cent of final merit |
Difficulty | Easy to moderate, speed based | Moderate to hard, accuracy based |
The shift from speed to accuracy is the main adjustment. In Prelims, a quick attempt on many questions pays. In the Mains, a slower and more careful attempt usually scores more, because each Reasoning and Quant mistake costs 0.3125 marks.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
For each wrong answer, one fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. A question left blank carries no penalty. Because Mains tests carry different marks per question, the penalty differs by section.
Stage and test | Marks per question | Penalty per wrong answer |
|---|---|---|
Prelims, both tests | 1 | 0.25 |
Mains Reasoning | 1.25 | 0.3125 |
Mains Quantitative Aptitude | 1.25 | 0.3125 |
Mains General Awareness | 1 | 0.25 |
Mains English or Hindi | 1 | 0.25 |
Mains Computer Knowledge | 0.5 | 0.125 |
Normalisation
If an exam runs in more than one session, corrected scores are normalised using the equi-percentile method, and scores are taken up to two decimal places. Your scorecard shows the normalised figure, so it can differ slightly from what you count from the answer key.
What the IBPS RRB PO Pattern Means for You
Prelims gives about 37 seconds per Reasoning question and 30 per Quant question: Leave lengthy puzzles or DI sets that look unfamiliar and return only if time remains in that section.
Reasoning and Quant are half the Mains: They carry 100 of 200 marks. One extra correct answer there is worth 1.25 marks, more than in any other test.
General Awareness is the fastest marks: 40 marks in 15 minutes. Known facts take seconds, so preparation, not speed, decides this score.
Computer Knowledge is low weight but has a minimum: 20 marks in 15 minutes. Do not neglect it, as falling below its minimum ends your process.
The cost of a wrong guess: Four wrong answers cancel one right answer. Guess only when you can rule out at least two options.
Sectional Minimum Risk
A single weak test can end your attempt even with a high total. Candidates commonly fall short in General Awareness, because it cannot be solved by working harder in the hall, or in Computer Knowledge, because they skip it during preparation. Track your score in every Mains test separately in mocks, and treat any test where you stay below about 40 per cent of its marks as a red flag to fix first. This 40 per cent is a working benchmark, not an official cut-off. The section-wise analysis in Testkart mock tests shows each test score separately, which makes this easy to track.
Common Interview
Candidates who clear the Main exam are called for a Common Interview. Up to three times the declared vacancies in each state, in each category, may be called, subject to availability. Mains scores are not shared with candidates until the interview process is complete.
Total marks: 100.
Minimum to qualify: 40 per cent, or 35 per cent for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates.
Venue and date: Interviews are held at select centres. The centre, venue, date and time appear in your interview call letter, and requests to change them are not entertained.
Documents: You must produce original certificates and self-attested copies for age, qualification, category and other eligibility claims. Missing documents can cancel your candidature.
Final Merit Calculation
The final score combines the Main exam and the interview in an 80:20 ratio. Prelims marks play no part. If two candidates tie, the older candidate ranks higher.
Component | Your score | Weightage | Weighted score |
|---|---|---|---|
Main exam (normalised) | 110 out of 200 | 80 per cent | 110 x 80 / 200 = 44.00 |
Interview | 62 out of 100 | 20 per cent | 62 x 20 / 100 = 12.40 |
Final score | 56.40 out of 100 |
This example uses illustrative scores, not real cut-offs. It shows why the Mains matters most: 10 extra Mains marks add 4 points to the final score, while 10 extra interview marks add 2. Merit is then drawn state-wise and category-wise, and provisional allotment goes to the RRB of the state you chose.
Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy
Prelims
Reasoning, 25 minutes: Spend the first 6 to 8 minutes on inequality, syllogism and other single questions, then attempt two or three puzzle sets you can crack quickly.
Quant, 20 minutes: Start with simplification, then quadratic equations and series, then one DI set. Keep arithmetic word problems for the end.
Mains
Reasoning and Quant, 30 minutes each: Read every puzzle and DI set quickly before choosing. Abandon a set after two minutes if the first question will not resolve.
General Awareness, 15 minutes: One pass, answering what you know. Do not revisit doubtful questions unless time is left.
Computer Knowledge, 15 minutes: Similar recall approach; 40 questions leave about 22 seconds each.
Language, 30 minutes: Attempt grammar and filler questions before the comprehension passage if reading speed is your weakness.
Because the timer locks each section, unused minutes in one test cannot be carried to the next. Use any spare time at the end of a section to review answers you marked for review, not to start a new puzzle set you cannot finish.
Practise these splits under real timers. You can take full-length IBPS RRB PO mock tests on Testkart, apply these time splits and review the section-wise analysis after each one.
Call Letters and Reporting
At the Prelims, your call letter and photo ID copy are stamped by the centre staff and returned to you. Keep them safely, because you must bring the stamped Prelims call letter and stamped ID copy to the Main exam along with the Mains call letter. You also need one extra photograph, the same as the one pasted on the call letter, for each exam. Candidates who arrive without these may not be allowed to sit the exam.
Older Pattern Pages to Ignore
Older pages may show a single combined Prelims timer, list Financial Awareness for Scale I or describe English as compulsory. None of these match the current notification.
