Indian Bank Apprentice Exam Pattern 2025-26: Marks, Sections and Timing
The Indian Bank Apprentice exam pattern is short and simple: one online test of 100 questions, a Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) and, at the Bank's discretion, an interview. There is no separate descriptive paper. Because all 100 questions share one 60-minute window, how you spend time across sections decides your score more than any single topic.
The details below come from the Bank's 2025-26 apprentice advertisement. Older pages and unofficial summaries may show a different pattern, so rely on the official notification when a new cycle is announced.
Table of Contents
Exam Pattern at a Glance
Stage | Format | Marks | Duration | Nature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Online test | Objective, five sections | 100 | 60 minutes (composite) | Scored and ranked |
Local Language Proficiency Test | Read, write, speak, understand | Not marked in the advertisement | As set by the Bank | Qualifying; failing means no engagement |
Interview | Personal interaction | Not specified | Not specified | At the Bank's discretion |
Online Test Pattern
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
Reasoning Aptitude | 15 | 15 |
Computer Knowledge | 10 | 10 |
English Language | 25 | 25 |
Quantitative Aptitude | 25 | 25 |
General Awareness (with special reference to the banking industry) | 25 | 25 |
Total | 100 | 100 |
Composite time: The 60 minutes are given for the whole test. The advertisement does not fix a separate time for each section.
No sectional minimum: The Bank states there is no minimum qualifying mark for each section. Only the aggregate counts.
Language of the paper: The test is offered in major regional languages, except the English section, which is in English.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Every question carries one mark. For each wrong answer, one-fourth of a mark is deducted. Unanswered questions carry no penalty. In the Bank's own words on selection, the minimum aggregate qualifying marks are decided by the Bank, with a 5% relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates.
Outcome | Marks |
|---|---|
Correct answer | +1 |
Wrong answer | -0.25 |
Not attempted | 0 |
What the Pattern Means for You
Three sections carry 75 marks: English, quantitative aptitude and general awareness are 25 marks each, so they should get most of your study and exam time.
A wrong guess costs more than a skip: A wrong answer loses 0.25 marks and also loses the 1 mark you could have earned, a swing of 1.25 marks. Guess only when you can remove at least one option.
Computer knowledge is the cheapest 10 marks: The questions are factual and quick, so solve them early in the test.
Accuracy beats volume: Since there is no sectional cut-off, you can skip a difficult puzzle set entirely and still stay in the race.
Worked example
Suppose you attempt 85 questions, get 70 right and 15 wrong, and skip 15. Your score is 70 minus (15 x 0.25), which is 66.25 marks. If those same 15 wrong answers had been skipped, you would have scored 70. This is why careful attempt selection matters.
Local Language Proficiency Test and Interview
The LLPT is held after the online test. You must be able to read, write, speak and understand one specified local language of the state you applied to, and failing it means no engagement. Candidates whose Class 8, 10 or 12 mark sheet shows study of that language are exempt. The test is held at a Bank-designated centre at the candidate's own expense.
The interview is not compulsory. The Bank may call candidates for it at its discretion. Outstation SC, ST and PwBD candidates called for an interview may receive travel reimbursement as per the advertisement, unless they are already in government or public sector service.
Merit List and Ties
The Bank prepares the merit list state-wise and category-wise in order of aggregate marks. If candidates tie at the cut-off, the older candidate is ranked higher. When the test is held in more than one session, scores are normalised using the equi-percentile method so that sessions of different difficulty can be compared fairly. A wait list is also prepared state-wise and category-wise. Your state and category therefore decide the competition you face, which is covered on the Indian Bank Apprentice cut-off page.
Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy
First 10 minutes: Finish computer knowledge and the easy reasoning questions.
Next 30 minutes: Attempt English and general awareness, then quantitative aptitude questions you can solve at first sight.
Last 20 minutes: Return to skipped questions, data interpretation and puzzles, and review any marked answers.
These splits are a starting plan. Adjust them after a few full-length tests. You can practise the exact 100-question, 60-minute format with Indian Bank Apprentice mock tests on Testkart, and check the topics behind each section on the syllabus page.
Always confirm the pattern for the current cycle in the official Indian Bank apprentice advertisement. The Bank may change any criteria, exam structure or selection method.
