Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research

Medical entrance exam for JIPMER institutes (Now merged with NEET)

JIPMER Study Material

JIPMER MBBS admission is one of the most sought-after medical seats in India. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, offers the MBBS course at its Puducherry and Karaikal campuses. JIPMER no longer holds its own MBBS entrance test. Since 2020, every MBBS seat at JIPMER has been filled through NEET UG scores and counselling by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

This guide covers the JIPMER MBBS 2027 admission route: the latest NEET UG updates, seat matrix, eligibility, application steps, exam pattern, syllabus, cut-off benchmarks, fees and a practical preparation plan. The NEET UG 2026 cycle saw a cancelled exam, a re-exam and an announced move to computer-based testing from 2027, so each section separates confirmed facts from what is still awaited.

Is There a Separate JIPMER MBBS Entrance Exam?

No. JIPMER conducted its own MBBS entrance test until 2019. The National Medical Commission Act, 2019 made NEET UG the single entrance exam for MBBS admission across India, including at AIIMS and JIPMER. From the 2020 session onwards, JIPMER MBBS seats have been allotted only on the basis of NEET UG ranks.

Many pages still describe the old JIPMER MBBS exam. That paper had 200 multiple-choice questions in 150 minutes, covering Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English Language and Comprehension, and Logical and Quantitative Reasoning. None of this applies now. If a page asks you to register on the JIPMER portal for an MBBS entrance test or shows a JIPMER MBBS admit card, treat it as outdated.

What this means for you: preparing for JIPMER MBBS means preparing for NEET UG. Your target is a high NEET rank, followed by careful choice filling in MCC counselling.

Latest Updates for the 2027 Cycle

  • NEET UG 2027 to be computer-based: On 15 May 2026, the Union Education Minister announced that NEET UG will move to computer-based testing from 2027. The NTA has not yet released the 2027 information bulletin, so the exact pattern, shifts and normalisation rules are awaited.

  • NEET UG 2026 re-exam: The pen-and-paper exam held on 3 May 2026 was cancelled by the NTA on 12 May 2026 after an alleged question paper leak. The re-exam took place on 21 June 2026, and the result was declared on 16 July 2026, with about 11.21 lakh candidates qualifying.

  • MCC counselling 2026: MCC ran Rounds 1 to 3 between August and September 2026, followed by a stray vacancy round in late September and early October. JIPMER Puducherry and Karaikal seats were part of this counselling.

  • Syllabus: The National Medical Commission (NMC) confirmed the NEET UG 2026 syllabus without removing any chapters. The syllabus for 2027 is expected to be notified before the application window opens.

About JIPMER

JIPMER traces its roots to the medical school set up in Pondicherry by the French administration in 1823. It was renamed Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research in 1964 and declared an Institute of National Importance under the JIPMER Act, 2008. The main campus sits at Dhanvantari Nagar in Puducherry, and the Karaikal campus admitted its first MBBS batch in 2016.

JIPMER students train in a large tertiary-care hospital with a high patient load, which is a major reason the institute ranks among the top medical colleges in India. Along with low fees, this makes JIPMER Puducherry one of the earliest choices to fill up in MCC counselling every year.

JIPMER MBBS Seats

JIPMER has two quotas. Open seats are available to eligible candidates from all over India. Internal seats are reserved for candidates with Puducherry UT domicile, as defined in the MCC information bulletin. Both quotas follow central reservation: 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC (non-creamy layer) and 10% for EWS, with horizontal reservation for PwBD candidates.

JIPMER MBBS Eligibility Criteria

There is no separate JIPMER eligibility test. You must meet the NEET UG eligibility rules set by the NMC and then qualify NEET UG with the required percentile.

Age Limit

Candidates must be at least 17 years old on 31 December of the admission year. There is currently no upper age limit for NEET UG.

Educational Qualification

  • Qualifying exam: Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.

  • Minimum marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology: 50% for General, 45% for General-PwBD, and 40% for SC, ST and OBC candidates.

  • Appearing candidates: Students in Class 12 can apply, but they must clear the qualifying exam with the required marks before admission.

Qualifying NEET UG only makes you eligible for counselling. A JIPMER seat requires a rank far above the qualifying mark.

Domicile and Nationality

  • Open seats: Indian nationals and OCI cardholders who meet MCC rules can compete for open seats.

  • Internal seats: Only candidates who satisfy the Puducherry UT domicile conditions in the MCC bulletin can claim these seats. Keep your domicile certificate ready before counselling.

JIPMER MBBS Admission Process and Application Fee

  1. Register for NEET UG: Apply on neet.nta.nic.in during the application window and pay the fee.

  2. Appear in NEET UG: Download the admit card and take the exam on the scheduled date.

  3. Check your result: The NTA publishes scores and All India Ranks (AIR). Only qualified candidates move to counselling.

  4. Register for MCC counselling: Register on mcc.nic.in, pay the registration fee and security deposit, and select the relevant quotas.

  5. Fill choices: Add JIPMER Puducherry and JIPMER Karaikal in your preferred order. Choose the internal quota as well if you hold Puducherry domicile.

  6. Seat allotment and reporting: If a JIPMER seat is allotted, report to the institute with original documents within the given window.

NEET UG Application Fee (2026 cycle)

Category

Fee (candidates in India)

General

Rs. 1,700

General-EWS and OBC-NCL

Rs. 1,600

SC, ST, PwBD and Third Gender

Rs. 1,000

MCC charged a non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 1,000 for UR and EWS candidates and Rs. 500 for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates in 2026, in addition to a refundable security deposit. Fees for 2027 will be confirmed in the official bulletins.

Exam Pattern

Since admission depends on NEET UG, the NEET UG pattern is the JIPMER MBBS exam pattern. The latest confirmed pattern is from the 2026 cycle:

Subject

Questions

Marks

Physics

45

180

Chemistry

45

180

Biology (Botany and Zoology)

90

360

Total

180

720

All 180 questions were compulsory, to be attempted in 180 minutes. Each correct answer earns 4 marks, each wrong answer loses 1 mark, and unattempted questions score zero. The 2026 paper was pen and paper; the 2027 paper is expected to be computer-based.

What this means for you:

  • Biology decides the rank: Half the paper is Biology, so a small accuracy gap there costs more marks than anywhere else.

  • One minute per question: There is no spare time. Practise finishing Biology quickly to leave more time for Physics calculations.

  • Guessing is costly: A wrong answer erases a quarter of a correct one, so guess only when you can eliminate at least two options.

Older pages may still show the 200-question pattern with optional questions or the old JIPMER pattern. Follow the latest NTA information bulletin.

Syllabus Overview

The syllabus is the NEET UG syllabus notified by the NMC. It is based on Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Subject

Units

Important areas

Physics

20

Mechanics, electrostatics, current electricity, optics, modern physics

Chemistry

20

Physical chemistry numericals, chemical bonding, coordination compounds, organic reaction mechanisms

Biology

10

Human physiology, genetics and evolution, reproduction, ecology, plant physiology

JIPMER MBBS Cut-off

JIPMER cut-offs are published as closing ranks in MCC allotment results, not as marks. Open-quota General seats at JIPMER Puducherry usually close within the top few hundred All India Ranks in Round 1. For example, published Round 1 allotment data for 2023 shows the General category closing at around AIR 277. Karaikal closes later than Puducherry, and the internal domicile quota follows its own, separate merit list.

Cut-offs change every year with paper difficulty, the number of candidates and seat changes. Treat previous closing ranks as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin above them.

JIPMER MBBS Fees

JIPMER is among the most affordable medical colleges in India. The figures below are indicative, based on recently reported fee structures, and JIPMER can revise them.

Fee head

Indicative amount

Tuition fee

Rs. 1,200 per year

Total payable at admission (first year)

About Rs. 14,920

Annual fee in later years

About Rs. 6,770

Hostel rent

About Rs. 12,000 (double) to Rs. 15,000 (single) per year

Refundable deposits, such as hostel caution and mess deposits, are charged separately. Confirm the current fee notice on jipmer.edu.in before reporting.

How to Prepare for JIPMER MBBS

A JIPMER Puducherry seat needs a rank close to the very top of NEET UG. Your plan should focus on accuracy as much as coverage.

  • Master NCERT first: Most Biology and a large share of Chemistry questions come directly from NCERT lines, diagrams and tables. Read them until you can recall examples and exceptions.

  • Build Physics problem-solving: Practise numericals daily, especially in mechanics, electrostatics and current electricity.

  • Solve previous year papers: NEET papers from recent years show the real difficulty and repeated concepts.

  • Prepare for the computer-based format: If NEET UG 2027 is held online, get used to reading questions on screen, marking for review and managing time without an OMR sheet.

  • Keep an error log: Note every wrong or slow question and revise the log weekly.

Getting into JIPMER MBBS is ultimately about a strong NEET UG rank and smart counselling choices. Keep checking the official NTA and MCC websites for 2027 updates, and build steady practice into your routine with Testkart's online tests.
