JIPMER Exam Pattern 2027: Complete Guide
JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) is an Institute of National Importance under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with campuses in Puducherry and Karaikal. It no longer conducts its own MBBS entrance test. Since 2020, every MBBS seat at JIPMER has been filled through NEET UG, and its MD, MS and MDS seats through INI CET. So when students search for the JIPMER exam pattern today, what they need is the pattern of the exam that leads to the course they want.
This guide sets out the JIPMER exam pattern for the 2027 admission cycle route by route: NEET UG for MBBS and undergraduate nursing and allied courses, INI CET for postgraduate medical seats, and the entrance tests JIPMER still runs itself for its MSc, MPH, diploma, fellowship and PhD programmes. It also covers the marking scheme, recent changes and what each pattern means for your preparation.

The NEET UG figures reflect the 2026 information bulletin. NTA has started the process of moving NEET UG to computer-based testing from 2027, but the detailed 2027 pattern will only be confirmed in the next information bulletin.
Has the JIPMER MBBS Entrance Exam Been Discontinued?
Yes. The last separate JIPMER MBBS entrance exam was held in 2019. From 2020, admissions to MBBS at JIPMER Puducherry and JIPMER Karaikal moved to NEET UG under the single national entrance policy for medical admissions. Seats are allotted through counselling based on NEET UG ranks.
For reference, the discontinued JIPMER MBBS exam was a computer-based test of 200 questions in 150 minutes. It covered Physics, Chemistry and Biology along with short English and logical and quantitative reasoning sections. None of that applies now.
Ignore old JIPMER mock papers built on that pattern: They include reasoning and English questions that NEET UG does not ask.
Do not rely on pages listing 200 questions with optional sections: That was the NEET UG format from 2021 to 2024. The optional Section B was removed in 2025.
JIPMER MBBS Exam Pattern (NEET UG)
For MBBS at JIPMER, the NEET UG paper is the only test you write. Your NEET rank decides whether you can get a JIPMER seat, and JIPMER is one of the most sought-after choices in counselling, so the margin for error is small.
NEET UG Paper Structure
Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
Physics | 45 | 180 |
Chemistry | 45 | 180 |
Biology (Botany) | 45 | 180 |
Biology (Zoology) | 45 | 180 |
Total | 180 | 720 |
All questions are compulsory multiple-choice questions with one correct option. The paper lasts 3 hours (180 minutes). It is offered in 13 languages, including English and Hindi, and the syllabus is notified by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Response | Marks |
|---|---|
Correct answer | +4 |
Incorrect answer | -1 |
Unanswered or marked for review without answer | 0 |
If NTA drops a question, or a question has more than one correct option, the information bulletin explains how marks are awarded. Check the current bulletin, because these rules have been revised in recent cycles.
Key Changes to Know
Section B removed (2025): The old 200-question paper with 20 extra minutes was replaced by 180 compulsory questions in 3 hours.
NEET UG 2026 re-examination: The 3 May 2026 paper was cancelled after a leak investigation, and the re-examination was held offline on 21 June 2026. The pattern itself did not change.
Computer-based test from 2027: The Education Ministry announced a shift to computer-based testing from 2027, and NTA has begun identifying test centres. The number of shifts, normalisation method and any change in question count are not yet confirmed.
What This Means for You
A wrong guess costs five marks of swing: You lose 1 mark and miss the 4 you could have earned. At the rank levels needed for JIPMER, a handful of careless errors can move you thousands of ranks.
Biology is half the paper: 90 of 180 questions are from Botany and Zoology. High accuracy here, built on NCERT, gives the most stable score.
You have one minute per question on average: Biology questions usually take less time, which frees minutes for Physics numericals.
Plan for a screen, not paper: If the 2027 exam is computer-based, practise reading questions, marking for review and navigating on screen well before the exam.
JIPMER B.Sc Nursing and Allied Health Sciences
JIPMER does not hold a separate written test for its undergraduate nursing and allied health courses. Admission is based on NEET UG scores, so the paper pattern is exactly the one described above. JIPMER issues its own prospectus for these courses and prepares merit lists and counselling from NEET UG performance and the course-specific eligibility rules.
In practice, this means one paper serves several goals. A student aiming for MBBS can also apply for B.Sc Nursing or an allied health course at JIPMER with the same NEET UG score, provided the separate application window and eligibility conditions are met.
JIPMER PG Exam Pattern (INI CET)
JIPMER fills its MD, MS and MDS seats through the Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI CET), conducted by AIIMS New Delhi twice a year for the January and July sessions. The January 2027 session exam is scheduled for 1 November 2026.
Particular | Details |
|---|---|
Mode | Computer-based test |
Total questions | 200 objective-type questions |
Structure | 4 sections of 50 questions each |
Time | 3 hours in total, 45 minutes per section |
Question types | Objective multiple-choice questions, in the formats notified in the prospectus |
Marking | +1 for a correct answer, 1/3 mark deducted for a wrong answer, 0 for unanswered |
Language | English |
Subjects | Pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical subjects of the MBBS curriculum |
Each section closes automatically after 45 minutes, and you cannot return to it. This sectional lock matters more than the question count. You cannot save tough questions for the end of the paper, so every block must be finished within its own time.
DM and MCh seats at JIPMER go through INI SS (Super Speciality), also conducted by AIIMS New Delhi. Its pattern differs by speciality, so follow the INI SS prospectus for your course.
What This Means for PG Aspirants
Negative marking is a third of a mark: Guessing between two remaining options can pay off; blind guessing across four does not.
Pace each section separately: Aim to finish a first pass in about 35 minutes and use the rest for marked questions within that same block.
Clinical subjects carry more weight: AIIMS does not publish subject-wise weightage, but medicine, surgery and allied clinical subjects have dominated recent papers.
Entrance Tests Conducted by JIPMER
JIPMER still runs its own entrance examination for several non-MBBS programmes. For the 2026 cycle, it released a prospectus covering MSc, MPH, Post Basic Diploma (PBD), Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and Postgraduate Fellowship (PGF) courses, along with the Medical Physics internship programme. PhD admissions follow a separate notice.
Programme | Exam | Format | Selection |
|---|---|---|---|
MSc (medical and nursing streams) | JIPMER entrance test | Computer-based objective test | Merit in the entrance test, with any additional steps given in the prospectus |
MPH | JIPMER entrance test | Computer-based objective test | As per prospectus |
PBD, PGD and PGF | JIPMER entrance test | Computer-based objective test | As per prospectus |
PhD | JIPMER PhD entrance | Written test | Written test followed by interview or viva-voce |
JIPMER publishes the number of questions, duration, subject areas, marking and minimum qualifying marks in each cycle's prospectus, and these vary between programmes. Read the prospectus for your course before you prepare, rather than relying on figures from earlier years.
JIPMER also conducts recruitment examinations, such as those for Nursing Officer and other Group B and C posts. These are job exams with their own notifications and patterns, and they are not covered on this page.
How Selection and Merit Work
MBBS: NTA publishes the NEET UG All India Rank. Seats at JIPMER Puducherry and Karaikal are then allotted through counselling in order of rank, choices and category, with a share of seats reserved for Puducherry domicile candidates under the applicable rules.
B.Sc Nursing and allied health: JIPMER prepares merit lists from NEET UG scores for eligible applicants and conducts counselling as announced in its prospectus.
MD, MS and MDS: AIIMS publishes INI CET ranks and runs seat allocation for all participating institutes, including JIPMER.
JIPMER-run courses: Merit is based on the JIPMER entrance test, plus any interview or viva-voce stated in the prospectus.
When two candidates score the same, each exam applies its own tie-break rules. NEET UG, for example, looks at subject-wise scores and the number of incorrect answers. The exact order is listed in each year's information bulletin.
Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy
For NEET UG, a simple time plan keeps you from spending 15 minutes on one Physics problem. The split below is a practical starting point, not an official rule. Adjust it after a few full-length mocks.
Section | Questions | Suggested time | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
Biology (Botany and Zoology) | 90 | About 60 to 70 minutes | Fast, accurate recall from NCERT |
Chemistry | 45 | About 40 to 45 minutes | Inorganic and organic first, then physical chemistry calculations |
Physics | 45 | About 50 to 55 minutes | Attempt direct formula questions first |
Review | - | About 10 to 15 minutes | Marked questions and answer-sheet or screen check |
Use two rounds: Answer everything you are sure of in the first round. Return to marked questions only in the second.
Set a skip rule: If a question has taken over two minutes with no clear path, mark it and move on.
Protect the answer record: In the OMR format, fill bubbles as you go, not at the end. In a computer-based test, check that every answer you meant to submit is saved.
How to Prepare for the Current Pattern
Preparation for JIPMER is preparation for NEET UG or INI CET, with a higher target score. Build the plan around the pattern rather than around the institute name.
Finish the syllabus with NCERT as the base: Cover every NMC-notified topic before moving to advanced material. Use the JIPMER syllabus guide as your checklist.
Add chapter tests early: Short timed tests after each chapter show whether you can apply a concept under time pressure.
Move to full-length mocks in the final months: Take at least one full paper a week, then two to three a week close to the exam, always in the current 180-question format.
Analyse every mock the same day: Separate wrong answers, slow answers and questions you skipped but could have solved. Keep an error log and revise it weekly.
Solve previous year papers: NEET UG and INI CET papers show the real difficulty and how questions are framed.
Older pages may still show the discontinued JIPMER MBBS paper or the pre-2025 NEET UG format with optional questions. Always follow the latest official documents: the NEET UG information bulletin from NTA, the INI CET prospectus on the AIIMS examinations portal, and the course prospectus on the official JIPMER website.
