LIC ADO Syllabus 2026: Prelims and Mains Topic-Wise Checklist
The LIC ADO syllabus covers the tests that LIC sets for the Apprentice Development Officer post: Reasoning Ability, Numerical Ability and English in the Prelims, and Reasoning with Numerical Ability, General Awareness with English, and Insurance and Financial Marketing Awareness in the Mains. This page turns those test names into a topic-wise checklist for the 2026 cycle so you know what to study first.
LIC names the tests in its notification but, as far as we could confirm, does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The topic lists below are built from the test names and from the kinds of questions reported in earlier cycles. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list. The 2026 notification had not been released as of 21 October 2026, so the stage structure shown here follows the 2023 cycle.

Key Points to Know Before You Start
English is qualifying in Prelims: it does not add to your rank, but you must clear it, so give it steady practice instead of ignoring it.
The Mains is where the post-specific content appears: insurance, finance and marketing questions are not part of the Prelims at all.
Agents and employees may see different section names: in 2023 the insurance section was reported under different titles for each route, so check the notice for your category.
Older pages may still show a different layout: follow the official notification for the cycle you are applying to.
LIC ADO Prelims Syllabus
The Prelims tests speed and accuracy in aptitude and basic English. Reasoning and Numerical Ability carry all the ranking marks, so they should take most of your preparation time.
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Reasoning Ability | Puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, inequalities, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking, input-output, data sufficiency, alphanumeric series | Seating arrangement and puzzles, because they appear in sets |
Numerical Ability | Simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, percentages, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time, speed and distance, mixtures, ages, mensuration, permutation and combination, probability, data interpretation | Simplification and number series for quick marks, then data interpretation |
English Language | Reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, sentence improvement, fill in the blanks, para jumbles, vocabulary, idioms and phrases | Reading comprehension and error spotting |
Puzzles and data interpretation usually take the longest to solve and carry the most marks per set. If you are short of time, secure the shorter topics first and then work on the sets.
LIC ADO Mains Syllabus
The Mains uses the same aptitude areas at a higher level and adds general awareness and insurance topics. Treat each subject as its own block.
Reasoning and Numerical Ability
Reasoning: the Prelims topics, with more weight on multi-step puzzles, logical reasoning and input-output.
Numerical Ability: the Prelims topics, with more data interpretation, caselets and arithmetic word problems.
General Knowledge, Current Affairs and English
Area | Topics to cover |
|---|---|
Current affairs | National and international events, awards, appointments, summits, sports, books and authors from the last 6 to 9 months |
Economy and banking | Union Budget highlights, RBI policy decisions, government schemes, economic indicators |
Static GK | Important days, organisations and headquarters, national parks, basic geography and polity |
English | Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and sentence correction |
Insurance and Financial Marketing Awareness
This 60-question section is where the post-specific preparation pays off. Cover it in three groups:
Insurance basics: principles such as utmost good faith, insurable interest and indemnity; types of life insurance policies (term, endowment, whole life, unit-linked and annuity); premium, bonus and claim basics; reinsurance and bancassurance.
Regulation and LIC: the role of IRDAI, LIC's history and range of products, and government insurance schemes.
Financial and marketing awareness: the RBI and monetary policy, money and capital markets, mutual funds, digital payments, financial inclusion, and sales and marketing basics such as the marketing mix, customer relationship management and lead generation.
Keep a short notes file for this section. Many questions are factual, so repeated revision works better than long reading sessions.
Overlap Between Prelims and Mains
You can study many areas once and use them in both stages. The table shows where to plan your effort.
Area | Prelims | Mains | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | 35 questions | Shared with Numerical Ability | Build core speed now, add harder sets later |
Numerical Ability | 35 questions | Shared with Reasoning | Practise data interpretation early in both stages |
English | Qualifying | Part of the GK and English section | Daily reading serves both |
Current affairs | Not tested | Tested | Start monthly notes before the Prelims |
Insurance and finance | Not tested | 60 questions | Begin during Prelims preparation |
Interview
The interview does not have a published syllabus. It usually checks your motivation for a sales and team-building role, basic knowledge of insurance, communication and awareness of current financial news. Prepare short, honest answers about your background and why you want to be a Development Officer.
