Maharashtra SSC Exam Pattern 2027: Marks, Duration and Internal Assessment
The Maharashtra SSC exam pattern sets how your Class 10 board marks are earned: which papers you write, how long each one lasts, and how much comes from school-based assessment. The exam is conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), and the 2027 written papers fall between 15 February and 11 March 2027, as per the board's announced window.
Knowing the pattern changes how you revise. Three of the six main subjects are split into two separate written papers, most papers last two hours, and every main subject keeps 20 marks for internal work that is completed before the written exams. This page walks through each part and what it means for your time.
Pattern at a Glance
Particular | Details |
|---|---|
Mode | Offline, pen and paper |
Main subjects | Six: three languages, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social Sciences |
Marks per main subject | 100 (generally 80 written and 20 internal, oral or practical) |
Total for main subjects | 600 |
Question types | Objective, very short, short and long answers, with activity-based and internal-choice questions |
Negative marking | None |
Passing marks | 35 per cent in each subject (written and internal combined) |
Usual start time | 11 am, with some language papers in a 3 pm slot (2026 timetable) |
Subject-wise Marks and Duration
Subject | Written paper(s) | Marks | Duration | Internal component |
|---|---|---|---|---|
First language | One paper | 80 | 3 hours | 20 (oral and related tasks) |
Second and third languages | One paper each | 80 each | 3 hours (composite courses 2 hours) | 20 each |
Mathematics | Part I Algebra; Part II Geometry | 40 + 40 | 2 hours each | 20 |
Science and Technology | Part 1; Part 2 | 40 + 40 | 2 hours each | 20 (practical) |
Social Sciences | Paper I History and Political Science; Paper II Geography | 40 + 40 | 2 hours each | 20 |
Total | 9 written papers | 480 | 120 |
Durations are taken from the 2026 timetable, where language papers ran from 11 am to 2 pm and the Maths, Science and Social Sciences parts ran from 11 am to 1 pm. The 2027 subject-wise timetable is still awaited, so confirm timings once it is released.
What this means for you
A 40-mark paper in two hours is tight: You have about three minutes per mark. Long proofs, constructions and diagrams eat time, so practise them under a timer.
Each part is its own exam: A weak Geometry paper cannot be rescued on the Algebra day. Revise and test each part separately.
Internal marks are a cushion: 20 of the 100 marks per subject are earned before February. A strong internal score makes the 35 per cent pass mark much easier to reach.
No negative marking: Never leave an objective question blank. An attempt costs nothing.
Paper-wise Structure
Mathematics
Algebra and Geometry are separate 40-mark papers. Each usually opens with multiple-choice and one-mark questions, then moves to two-, three-, four- and five-mark questions, with activity-based questions where you fill in steps of a solution. Geometry includes theorem proofs and constructions, so carry a full geometry box. Students with a disability may opt for Arithmetic in place of Algebra and Geometry, as provided in the timetable.
Science and Technology
Part 1 covers physics and chemistry chapters, and Part 2 covers biology and environment chapters. Expect objective questions, short answers, numericals, chemical equations, labelled diagrams and a small number of longer questions. The 20 internal marks come from practicals and the practical record, assessed in school before the written exams.
Social Sciences
Paper I covers History and Political Science, and Paper II covers Geography. Objective questions, short notes, "explain with reasons" and longer answers are common. Paper II also includes map work and graph or table reading, which are high-scoring with practice. Some websites split Paper II into Geography and Economics, so check the board's latest question paper format with your school.
Languages
Language papers test textual reading, unseen passages, grammar and writing skills such as letters, essays and reports. For first-language English, the written paper is commonly reported as Reading (textual) 20, Reading (non-textual) 20, Grammar 15 and Writing 25, with 20 marks for orals. Other languages follow a similar reading, grammar and writing structure.
Internal Assessment, Orals and Practicals
For 2027, orals, practicals and internal assessment are scheduled from 28 January to 13 February 2027, before the written exams. Your school conducts and marks this work and sends the marks to the board.
Languages: Oral tests such as reading aloud, speaking on a topic and listening tasks.
Science: Practical experiments, the journal or record book and viva questions.
Maths and Social Sciences: School-based tests, projects and assignments as set by the school.
Keep your journals complete, attend every practical session and ask your teachers how the 20 marks are split in your school.
Passing Rule and Result Calculation
You must score at least 35 per cent in each subject. Where a subject has two papers, or written and internal parts, the marks are added together for that subject. So in Maths, your Algebra, Geometry and internal marks together must reach 35 out of 100.
Worked example: A student scores 24 in Algebra, 22 in Geometry and 17 in internal assessment. The Maths total is 63 out of 100, a pass. If the student scored 10, 8 and 15, the total would be 33, just short of the pass mark, which is where the board's condonation rules may apply. Your overall percentage then decides whether you get distinction, first class, second class or pass class. See Maharashtra SSC passing marks for the bands and recent pass percentages.
Exam-Day Strategy
Reach early: Be at the centre at least 30 minutes before the paper starts, with your hall ticket and school ID.
Read the whole paper first: Mark the questions you are sure of and start with them to build momentum.
Follow the marks: Write longer answers for higher-mark questions and short, direct answers for one-mark items.
Keep ten minutes to check: Look for unanswered objective questions, missing units, and unlabelled diagrams or maps.
Electronic devices, including phones and smartwatches, are not allowed in exam halls. Follow the instructions printed on your hall ticket.
Older pages may still show outdated marks splits or older question formats, so follow the current format published by the board on the Maharashtra State Board website.
