MHT CET Pharmacy Eligibility 2027: B.Pharm Criteria

MHT CET is the gateway to B.Pharm and Pharm.D seats in Maharashtra, and the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Maharashtra, sets the rules for both the test and the admission process that follows. MHT CET pharmacy eligibility is decided at two points: when you register for the test, and later when you apply for seats through the Centralised Admission Process (CAP). Most confusion comes from mixing up these two stages.

This page sets out the educational qualification, candidature types, reservation rules and common disqualifiers for B.Pharm and Pharm.D admission. It is based on the official CAP information brochure for 2026-27. The 2027 brochure has not been released yet, so use this as your working guide and confirm every rule against the new brochure when it is published.

Eligibility for the Test vs Eligibility for Admission

Registering for MHT CET and qualifying for a pharmacy seat are not the same thing. You can sit the test and still be turned away at the CAP stage if your Class 12 subjects or documents do not meet the course rules.

  • To sit the test: You register on the CET Cell portal for the PCB group (or PCM, or both). Students who are in Class 12 usually register in the same year as their board exams. Check the 2027 CET information brochure for the exact registration conditions.

  • To get a seat: You must meet the course eligibility in the CAP brochure, hold a valid MHT CET score, register separately for CAP on the pharmacy admission portal and pass document verification.

The practical lesson is simple. Check your Class 12 subject combination and your category documents now, months before CAP opens, rather than after your result.

Educational Qualification for B.Pharm

For First Year B.Pharm, the 2026-27 CAP brochure asks Maharashtra candidates to meet three conditions.

  1. Class 12 or equivalent passed: With English as one of the subjects, and Physics, Chemistry and either Mathematics or Biology as optional subjects.

  2. Or an equivalent qualification: Any other qualification approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) as equivalent.

  3. MHT CET score: You must appear in all subjects of MHT CET and obtain a non-zero score.

Is there a 45% or 40% minimum for B.Pharm?

Many websites still say that B.Pharm needs 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology (40% for reserved categories). That rule appears in the 2026-27 brochure for engineering, architecture and several other courses, but the First Year B.Pharm and Pharm.D entries do not list any minimum percentage. They follow the subject-based PCI norms instead.

Rules can change from one cycle to the next. Read the B.Pharm section of the 2027 CAP brochure when it is released. If a minimum percentage is reintroduced, it will be printed there.

PCB or PCM score for B.Pharm

The B.Pharm eligibility entry asks for a non-zero MHT CET score without tying it to one group, and Class 12 Mathematics is accepted in place of Biology. Students from either stream have traditionally been considered for pharmacy. If you studied Biology in Class 12, the PCB paper is the natural choice; the MHT CET pharmacy exam pattern explains how the two papers differ. If you are undecided, attempt one full-length PCB mock and one PCM mock on Testkart and compare where you score better before you register.

Why English matters

English is a compulsory Class 12 subject for B.Pharm under the brochure. Students from some vocational or language-medium streams occasionally miss this condition. Check your Class 12 marksheet to confirm English is listed as a subject, not just as the medium of instruction.

Eligibility for Pharm.D

Pharm.D is a six-year clinical pharmacy programme, and its entry rules differ slightly from B.Pharm. For Maharashtra candidates, the 2026-27 brochure accepts any one of these qualifications:

  • Class 12 route: Passed Class 12 with Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects, along with Mathematics or Biology.

  • Diploma route: Passed D.Pharm from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act.

  • Equivalent route: Any other qualification approved by PCI as equivalent.

In every case, Maharashtra candidates must appear in all subjects of MHT CET and obtain a non-zero score. All India candidates can qualify through a non-zero NEET score or a non-zero MHT CET score, with preference given to NEET candidates.

Direct Second Year B.Pharm

D.Pharm holders can join B.Pharm directly in the second year through a separate CAP process called Direct Second Year Pharmacy (DSP). The 2026-27 brochure asks for a pass in D.Pharm from a PCI-approved institution, and it does not require an MHT CET score for this route. If you are a D.Pharm student, check the DSP portal rules rather than the first-year rules on this page.

Age Limit and Nationality

The CAP brochure does not prescribe an upper age limit for First Year B.Pharm or Pharm.D. Gap-year students and repeaters are therefore not barred by age, as long as they meet the qualification and score conditions for the cycle.

For Maharashtra and All India seats, you must be a citizen of India. Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), foreign nationals and children of Indian workers in Gulf countries are considered under separate supernumerary seats. The brochure adds a specific rule for OCI candidates: those who obtained OCI status before 4 March 2021 may be treated as Maharashtra or All India candidates if they meet the schooling and residence conditions set out in it.

Maharashtra Candidature Types

To compete for Maharashtra State seats, you must fall under one of five candidature types. You can claim only one type, and your type also decides your Home University area, which affects the seats you are considered for.

Type

Who qualifies (summary)

Type A

Passed SSC and HSC from a recognised institution in Maharashtra, and is domiciled in Maharashtra or born in Maharashtra

Type B

Does not fall under Type A, but the candidate or either parent is domiciled in Maharashtra and holds a domicile certificate

Type C

Either parent is a Government of India or Government of India Undertaking employee posted in Maharashtra before the last date of the CAP application

Type D

Either parent is a serving or retired employee of the Government of Maharashtra or a Maharashtra Government Undertaking

Type E

Passed SSC and HSC from the Maharashtra-Karnataka border area (or from Maharashtra while living in that area), with Marathi as mother tongue

For Types A to D, your Home University is the university covering the place of your qualifying exam, domicile certificate or parent's posting. Type E candidates are considered for Other than Home University and State Level seats. Maharashtra has ten Home University areas, so where you studied can change which colleges count as your home seats.

All India, NRI and Other Candidates

Candidates from outside Maharashtra can still apply for pharmacy seats in the state through separate quotas.

  • All India candidature: Any Indian national is eligible. For B.Pharm and Pharm.D, you need a non-zero NEET score or a non-zero MHT CET score, and NEET candidates get preference.

  • NRI candidates: Up to 5% of seats within the institutional quota may be filled with NRI candidates, where the institution has approval.

  • OCI, PIO, foreign nationals and Gulf workers' children: Supernumerary seats up to 15% of sanctioned intake, with one third reserved for children of Indian workers in Gulf countries.

  • Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh migrants: Supernumerary seats as per state policy, for eligible categories listed in the brochure.

Reservation and Special Seats

All reservations apply only to candidates belonging to Maharashtra State. The percentages below are calculated on the seats available to Maharashtra candidates through CAP.

Several other reservations and supernumerary schemes sit on top of this:

  • Economically Weaker Section (EWS): 10% of seats, over and above the sanctioned intake.

  • Persons with Disability: 5% of seats for candidates with a benchmark disability of at least 40%, certified by the competent authority.

  • Children of defence personnel: 5% of seats, allotted on a priority list set by the Ministry of Defence. Children of civilian defence staff are not covered.

  • Orphan candidates: 1% of CAP seats, excluding minority institutions and All India seats.

  • Female candidates: 30% of seats, except in the defence, disability and orphan categories.

  • Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme (TFWS): Up to 5% supernumerary seats per course, open only to Maharashtra candidates whose parents' annual income is below Rs. 8 lakh. The waiver covers tuition fee only, and TFWS students cannot change college or course later.

Who Is Not Eligible

These are the situations that most often cost students a pharmacy seat under the 2026-27 rules:

  • Missing a paper: You must appear in all subjects of MHT CET. Skipping Paper II means you do not meet the "appeared in all subjects" condition.

  • Wrong Class 12 combination: B.Pharm needs English plus Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology. Commerce and arts students without this combination are not eligible.

  • Only NEET, no MHT CET: For Maharashtra State seats, the brochure asks for an MHT CET score. NEET counts only under All India candidature.

  • Category claims without documents: Reserved-category seats need valid caste, caste validity and non-creamy layer documents where applicable. Missing or invalid documents can cost you the reserved seat at verification.

  • Non-Maharashtra candidates claiming reservation: Caste-based reservation is available only to candidates belonging to Maharashtra.

  • Claiming two candidature types: You can claim only one Maharashtra candidature type.

Documents to Keep Ready

The CAP brochure lists the documents to upload with your application. Most pharmacy applicants will need some combination of these:

  • Academic records: SSC and HSC marksheets, and the D.Pharm marksheet where relevant.

  • Identity and candidature: Proof of Indian nationality, a domicile certificate (needed for Type B), birth certificate or school leaving certificate.

  • Category documents: Caste certificate, caste validity certificate and a valid non-creamy layer certificate for categories that need one.

  • Special categories: EWS certificate, disability certificate, defence proformas, or an income certificate for TFWS.

Caste validity and non-creamy layer certificates take time to issue, so apply for them early. Check the full list in the official CAP information brochure for 2026-27, and track new notices on the State CET Cell website.
