MPPSC Forest Service Exam Pattern 2026: Stages and Marks
The MPPSC Forest Service exam pattern has five stages: Prelims, Mains, Interview, a physical test and a medical test. Both written stages are objective, which makes accuracy and time control the main skills to build.
The pattern below follows the 2025-26 cycle (Advertisement No. 30/2025). Some details, such as marks per part of the Mains paper and negative marking, are described differently by different sources, so those points are marked for checking against the official MPPSC notification.

Stage | Format | Marks (as reported) | Counted in final merit |
|---|---|---|---|
Prelims | Two objective papers | 200 + 200 | Screening stage |
Mains | Objective paper, Part A and Part B | See Mains table below | Yes |

Prelims pattern
Paper | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Paper I: General Studies | Objective | 200 | 2 hours |
Paper II: General Aptitude Test | Objective | 200 | 2 hours |
The Prelims is held jointly with the State Service Prelims. Reported qualifying rules are a minimum of 40% for unreserved candidates and 30% for reserved categories. Reports say about 20 times the number of vacancies, category-wise, move on to Mains. Sources differ on whether both papers are added for ranking or whether the aptitude paper is only qualifying, so confirm the exact rule in the notification.
Mains pattern
Part | Subject | Questions (reported) | Marks (reported) |
|---|---|---|---|
Part A | General Knowledge: Madhya Pradesh, national and international | 50 | 150 |
Part B | Forestry and General Science | 100 | 300 |
The Mains is an objective, computer-based test, with about 150 questions in total and a minimum qualifying mark of 40% for unreserved candidates. One source describes the Mains as two separate 200-mark papers, so the part-wise split in the table is indicative. Check the notification for the final structure and duration.
Interview, physical and medical tests
Interview: 50 marks, held by the Commission for a limited number of candidates per category, reported as three times the vacancies.
Physical test: Height, chest and a timed walk. Men must walk 25 km in 4 hours. The women's distance is 14 km for ACF, and the Ranger distance should be checked.
Medical test: Conducted by the Madhya Pradesh government medical board.
Marking scheme and negative marking
Sources do not agree here. Some report no negative marking in Prelims, while the notification summary for Mains mentions negative marking for wrong answers. The safest approach is to read the instructions printed in the official notification and on your admit card, and practise with a deduction on until you confirm the rule.
What the pattern means for you
Part B has twice the weight of Part A: In the reported split, each Part B question is worth about the same as a Part A question, but there are more of them, so forestry accuracy decides your rank.
Prelims needs a pass in both areas: A strong GS score does not help if the aptitude paper falls short of the minimum.
Interview marks are small: At 50 marks, the interview adjusts rank rather than rewrites it, so Mains performance matters most.
Physical test is pass or fail: Plan walking practice from the start.
Time management
Prelims: Spend the first pass on questions you can answer quickly, then return to longer comprehension and data questions.
Mains: Do Part B first if forestry is your strength, but leave enough time for Part A, because both parts have minimum marks.
Practice: Take timed sets in the same format using MPPSC Forest Service mock tests on Testkart and review time spent per section.
