MPSC Group C Eligibility Criteria 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Typing Rules
MPSC Group C eligibility is decided post by post. A graduate can usually apply for Clerk-Typist, Tax Assistant or Technical Assistant, while Industry Inspector and Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector (AMVI) need science or engineering qualifications. On top of that, typing certificates, Marathi knowledge, age limits and Maharashtra domicile rules decide whether you can apply and in which category.
This page explains the eligibility criteria for the Maharashtra Group C Services Combined Preliminary Examination 2026 (Advertisement No. 017/2026). Age is counted as on 1 October 2026, and the application window closed in July 2026. Use this guide to confirm your eligibility before the prelims on 3 January 2027, or to plan for the next cycle. The official advertisement on mpsc.gov.in is the final authority on every condition.

The degree must come from a university recognised under Indian law or be declared equivalent by the Maharashtra government. If your degree title is unusual, such as a dual or integrated programme, check the equivalence clause in the advertisement before relying on it.
Typing Certificate Rules
The typing requirement is the most common source of confusion, because it differs between the two posts that need it.
Clerk-Typist: You need either a Marathi typing certificate of 30 words per minute or an English typing certificate of 40 words per minute. One language is enough.
Tax Assistant: You need both certificates, Marathi 30 wpm and English 40 wpm. A candidate with only one of them cannot be selected for this post.
Accepted certificates: The Government Commercial Certificate (GCC) typing examination of the Maharashtra government, or a certificate the government recognises as equivalent.
Some pages show the same rule for both posts. Older or summarised versions often get this wrong, so read the post-wise qualification table in the official advertisement.
When You Must Hold the Qualification
As a standard MPSC rule, the required qualification, including any typing certificate, must be held by the last date of the online application. For Advertisement 017/2026, that deadline passed in July 2026. A degree result declared after the deadline does not make you eligible for this cycle.
Final-year students who missed this cycle can plan for the next Group C advertisement. If you are in your last semester, keep your provisional certificate or final marksheet ready, because MPSC checks the date on these documents during verification.
MPSC Group C Age Limit and Relaxation
Age is calculated as on 1 October 2026. Use your date of birth as recorded in your SSC certificate.
Minimum Age by Post
Post | Minimum age |
|---|---|
Tax Assistant | 18 years |
Clerk-Typist | 19 years |
Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector | 19 years |
Industry Inspector and Technical Assistant | 19 years |
Upper Age Limit by Category
Category | Upper age limit |
|---|---|
Open (unreserved) | 38 years |
Backward classes (Maharashtra domicile) | 43 years |
Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) | 43 years |
Orphans | 43 years |
Eligible sportspersons | 43 years |
Persons with benchmark disabilities | 45 years |
Ex-servicemen | Category limit plus period of military service plus 3 years |
Project-affected, earthquake-affected and other notified groups | As listed in the advertisement |
Relaxations generally cannot be stacked beyond the highest limit allowed for you. For example, a backward-class candidate with a benchmark disability gets the 45-year limit, not 43 plus another 5 years.
Worked Age Examples
Candidate | Age on 1 October 2026 | Result |
|---|---|---|
Born 12 March 2008, open category | 18 years 6 months | Eligible for Tax Assistant only; below the 19-year minimum for other posts |
Born 20 May 1986, open category | 40 years 4 months | Not eligible; above the 38-year open limit |
Born 20 May 1986, OBC with Maharashtra domicile and valid non-creamy layer certificate | 40 years 4 months | Eligible under the 43-year backward-class limit |
Born 5 January 1984, person with benchmark disability | 42 years 8 months | Eligible under the 45-year limit |
Nationality, Domicile and Marathi Knowledge
Nationality: You must be a citizen of India.
Domicile: Candidates from any state can apply in the open category. Reservation and age relaxation for backward classes, EWS and similar groups are available only to candidates domiciled in Maharashtra, backed by a valid domicile certificate.
Marathi: You must be able to read, write and speak Marathi. Mains Paper 1 for non-technical posts includes 60 Marathi questions at about Class 12 level, so this condition also affects your score, not just your eligibility.
Reservation and Certificates
Caste-based reservation: SC, ST, VJ-A, NT-B, NT-C, NT-D, OBC, SBC and SEBC candidates need a caste certificate issued by the competent Maharashtra authority.
Non-creamy layer: Candidates from categories where the creamy layer rule applies need a valid non-creamy layer certificate for the period MPSC specifies. An expired certificate is a common reason for losing a reserved seat.
EWS: Open-category candidates claiming EWS benefits need a valid EWS certificate in the format accepted by the Maharashtra government.
Horizontal reservation: Seats for women, eligible sportspersons, persons with benchmark disabilities, ex-servicemen, orphans and project-affected persons follow Maharashtra rules. Each claim needs its own certificate, and some, such as women's reservation, carry additional conditions in the advertisement.
A reservation claim must be made in the online application itself. You cannot add or change a category claim after submission, and a claim you cannot prove at verification moves you to the open category or out of the race.
AMVI-Specific Conditions
AMVI has the strictest eligibility in this advertisement because the job involves vehicle inspection and road safety work.
Condition | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
Minimum height | 163 cm | 155 cm |
Chest | 79 cm unexpanded, with at least 5 cm expansion | Not applicable |
Minimum weight | Not applicable | 45 kg |
Vision | No colour blindness | No colour blindness |
These physical standards are as reported for the 2026 cycle; confirm every figure in the official advertisement. Some earlier AMVI recruitment rules also asked for a driving licence, so check whether the 2026 advertisement requires one and by what date before you count on your eligibility.
Other Conditions
Small family declaration: Under the Maharashtra Civil Services (Declaration of Small Family) Rules, 2005, candidates must submit a small family declaration. Candidates covered by the rule's disqualification for more than two children are not eligible.
Computer qualification: Selected candidates must meet the Maharashtra government's computer proficiency requirement within the period allowed after appointment.
Medical fitness and character: Appointment depends on medical fitness and satisfactory verification of character and antecedents.
One application per candidate: MPSC treats multiple applications strictly, so apply through a single profile on the online portal.
Applying for More Than One Post
The combined prelims lets you opt for every post you are eligible for in a single application, so eligibility is checked separately for each post you select.
Example: A science graduate aged 24 with an English 40 wpm typing certificate can opt for Clerk-Typist, Technical Assistant and Industry Inspector, but not Tax Assistant (no Marathi typing certificate) or AMVI (no engineering diploma).
Why it matters: If you claim a post you are not eligible for, that candidature can be cancelled at verification even after you clear the mains. Opt only for posts where every condition is met.
Preferences: Allotment uses your merit and the post preferences you give, so rank posts in the order you would actually accept them.
Who Is Not Eligible
Graduates without the right typing certificate: A degree alone does not qualify you for Clerk-Typist or Tax Assistant.
Tax Assistant applicants with one certificate: Only Marathi or only English typing is not enough for this post.
Commerce or arts graduates applying for AMVI: AMVI needs an automobile or mechanical engineering diploma or degree.
Candidates who obtained their degree after the deadline: The qualification must be held by the last date of application.
Non-domicile candidates claiming reservation: They are treated as open-category candidates, with the 38-year limit.
Candidates who cannot read and write Marathi: Marathi knowledge is a condition of appointment.
