MPSC Group C Syllabus 2026: Prelims and Mains Topic Guide

The MPSC Group C syllabus has two layers. The prelims is a common general studies paper for every post, while the mains combines a language paper with a post-specific paper that changes depending on whether you are applying for Clerk-Typist, Tax Assistant, Industry Inspector, Technical Assistant or Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector (AMVI).

This guide follows the scheme for the Maharashtra Group C Services Combined Preliminary Examination 2026 (Advertisement No. 017/2026), whose prelims is now scheduled for 3 January 2027. MPSC publishes the official syllabus as subject headings in the advertisement appendix. The topic lists below expand those headings into what you actually need to study, so always keep the official advertisement PDF from mpsc.gov.in as your final reference.

All papers are objective. A wrong answer costs one-fourth of the marks of that question. For marking and stage details, see the MPSC Group C exam pattern page.

Key Points to Know Before You Start

  • No language section in prelims: Marathi and English are tested only in Mains Paper 1. The prelims is entirely general studies, reasoning and arithmetic, even though the paper is set in both languages.

  • Paper 2 is not the same for every post: About half of Paper 2 overlaps with general studies, but the rest depends on your post. Read the section for your post before you plan.

  • AMVI has a separate technical syllabus: AMVI candidates study engineering subjects and motor vehicle rules for their mains instead of the joint Paper 2.

  • Excise topics are not part of this cycle: Sub-Inspector (State Excise) is not included in Advertisement 017/2026, so excise law topics found in older syllabus pages do not apply this time.

  • The exam is offline: The 2026 exam is OMR-based. Pages that still mention a computer-based test were written before the corrigendum.

In recent MPSC papers, Maharashtra-specific questions in history, geography and polity make up a large share of the general studies part. Arithmetic and reasoning are the most predictable scorers, because the question types repeat and improve quickly with practice. Science questions are usually conceptual rather than numerical, so school-level NCERT books are enough for most candidates.

Mains Paper 1: Marathi and English Syllabus

Paper 1 is common to all non-technical posts. It has 60 Marathi questions, set at about Class 12 level, and 40 English questions, set at about graduation level. With 2 marks per question, Marathi alone carries 120 of the 200 marks.

Marathi (60 Questions)

Area

Topics

Grammar

Varnavichar, sandhi, samas, prayog, vibhakti, kal, alankar, shabdanche prakar (noun, pronoun, adjective, verb and others)

Vocabulary

Usage

Mhani (proverbs), vakprachar (idioms) and their meanings, sentence correction and sentence types

English (40 Questions)

Area

Grammar

Tenses, articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, voice, direct and indirect speech, question tags

Vocabulary

Synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, spelling, commonly confused words

Usage

Idioms and phrases, sentence correction, sentence improvement, sentence structure

Comprehension

Marathi grammar terms carry fixed rules, so they reward focused revision. English questions are fewer but test graduation-level vocabulary, so regular reading helps more than memorising word lists.

Mains Paper 2: General Ability and Post-Specific Syllabus

If you have opted for more than one post, cover the common part first and then add the post-specific topics in order of your preference. The official advertisement lists the Paper 2 headings for each post, so match your list against it.

AMVI Mains Syllabus

The AMVI mains carries 300 marks and tests diploma-level mechanical and automobile engineering along with motor vehicle law.

Area

Topics to cover

Core mechanical engineering

Strength of materials, theory of machines, manufacturing processes, hydraulics and fluid machines, thermal engineering, industrial engineering and metrology

Automobile systems

SI and CI engines, fuel and ignition systems, cooling and lubrication, clutch, gearbox and transmission, steering, brakes including ABS, axles and differential

Vehicle electricals and new technology

Battery, starting and charging systems, vehicle electrical circuits, electric vehicles and battery management

Maintenance and emissions

Vehicle servicing and maintenance, fault diagnosis, emission norms and pollution control

Motor vehicle law and safety

Motor Vehicles Act, licensing and registration, road safety, and the structure of the transport department and RTOs

The exact paper split for AMVI is given in the advertisement. Start with automobile systems and the Motor Vehicles Act, because they connect directly to the work an AMVI does.

Typing Skill Test: Is There a Syllabus?

There is no written syllabus for the typing test. Clerk-Typist and Tax Assistant candidates must hold a government typing certificate of Marathi 30 words per minute or English 40 words per minute, and the skill test checks that ability. It is qualifying, so it does not add to your merit score, but failing it ends your candidature for that post. Practise on the keyboard layout used for government typing exams in Maharashtra.

Reliable Study Sources for Each Area

Syllabus area

Where to study from

Maharashtra history and geography

Maharashtra State Board (Balbharati) textbooks of Classes 5 to 12, followed by one standard state-focused reference book

Polity and economics

NCERT textbooks for basics, then a standard polity book; the Economic Survey of Maharashtra for state figures

General science

NCERT and State Board science textbooks up to Class 10

Current affairs

A daily newspaper, Lokrajya (the Maharashtra government's monthly magazine) and monthly current affairs compilations

Marathi and English

A standard Marathi grammar book, an English grammar reference and previous mains papers

Limit yourself to one main source per subject and revise it several times. Switching between many books usually leads to unfinished revision.

How to Cover the MPSC Group C Syllabus

With the prelims on 3 January 2027, you have about 12 weeks from early October. A phased plan helps you finish the syllabus with time left for practice.

  1. Weeks 1 to 5, build the base: Cover polity, Maharashtra history and geography, and economics topic by topic. Spend 45 minutes a day on reasoning and arithmetic, and 20 minutes on Marathi grammar.

  2. Weeks 6 to 9, complete and test: Finish general science and the remaining topics, revise current affairs month by month, and take one full-length mock test every week.

  3. Weeks 10 to 12, practise and revise: Take two or three mock tests a week, solve previous year papers, and revise only from your short notes and error log.

  4. After the prelims: Shift focus to Paper 1 and your post-specific Paper 2 topics, and keep typing practice going if your post needs it.
