MPSC Rajyaseva Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Descriptive Mains and Interview

The MPSC Rajyaseva exam pattern has three stages: an objective Prelims, a descriptive Mains and an interview. The Maharashtra Public Service Commission replaced the old objective Mains with a UPSC-style written Mains from the 2025 cycle, and the 2026 cycle follows that format with nine papers.

This page sets out marks, time, qualifying rules and negative marking for each stage, then turns the numbers into strategy. It also covers the revised scheme MPSC has announced for 2027, which drops the optional subject and reduces interview marks. The 2026 Mains has been postponed and the state is reviewing the exam system, so recheck the official scheme before your exam.

  • Language: Question papers are in Marathi and English.

  • Screening only: Prelims marks are not added to the final merit.

Papers III to IX can be written in Marathi or English, in the medium you choose. The 2026 Mains is to be written in a question-cum-answer booklet, and recent notices say answer sheets are evaluated through on-screen marking.

Marking scheme and negative marking

In the Prelims, one-fourth of the marks for a question is deducted for each wrong answer. Unattempted questions carry no penalty. In GS, each question carries 2 marks, so a wrong answer costs 0.5 marks. The descriptive Mains has no negative marking; marks depend on how well you answer.

What the pattern means for you

  • Accuracy beats attempts in GS: Four wrong guesses cancel one correct answer. Guess only when you can eliminate two options.

  • Do not ignore CSAT: It is qualifying, but each year some strong GS candidates fail it. Take a baseline test early.

  • The Mains is a writing test: Seven merit papers of three hours each reward structure, speed and examples. Daily writing practice matters as much as reading.

  • Language papers are gatekeepers: The 25% bar is low, but failing either paper makes the rest of your Mains count for nothing.

Interview

Candidates who clear the Mains cut-off are called for an interview of 275 marks in the 2026 cycle. It tests personality, awareness and suitability for administrative posts. Shortlisting is usually in a fixed ratio to the posts, as set by the Commission.

Final merit calculation

Final merit equals Mains merit marks (out of 1,750) plus interview marks (out of 275), a total of 2,025. For example, a candidate with 900 in the Mains and 170 in the interview has 1,070 out of 2,025. Posts are then allotted by merit, category and stated preference.

News reports also mention a move to computer-based Prelims from 2027 and, since September 2026, a state review on whether to keep the descriptive Mains. These are not final for the 2026 cycle. Older pages may still show the pre-2025 objective Mains or an incorrect total, so follow the scheme on mpsc.gov.in.

Time management and exam-day strategy

  • Prelims GS: Do a first pass for sure answers in about 60 minutes, then a second pass for the rest.

  • CSAT: Start with the sections you score best in, and keep comprehension for when you are fresh if it is your strength.

  • Mains: Budget about 7 to 8 minutes for a 10-mark answer and 11 to 12 minutes for a 15-mark answer. Leave no question unattempted.

Check the topics for each paper on the MPSC syllabus page.
