OICL AO Syllabus 2026: Prelims and Mains Topic-wise Guide
The OICL AO syllabus covers the subjects tested in the Administrative Officer (Scale I) recruitment of The Oriental Insurance Company Limited. Prelims tests English, reasoning and quantitative aptitude. Mains adds general awareness, computer knowledge or professional knowledge depending on your stream, plus a descriptive English paper.
OICL names the tests in its notification but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The topic lists below are built from the 2025 notification and from questions asked in previous years. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list. This page also shows which topics to prioritise, how prelims and mains overlap, and how to plan your preparation before the next notification.

Key Points to Know Before You Start
No official topic list: OICL lists only the test names, so previous papers are your best guide to depth and difficulty.
Mains is stream-specific: Generalists get Quantitative Aptitude and Computer Knowledge in mains. Specialists get a Professional Knowledge test on their discipline instead of, or alongside, some general sections.
Specialist streams change: The 2024 cycle hired Accounts, Actuarial, Engineering, IT, Medical and Legal officers. The 2025 cycle hired only Hindi Officers as specialists. Check which streams the next notification opens.
Prelims marks do not count in merit: Treat prelims as a gate. Your long-term effort should go into mains subjects.
Insurance awareness matters: General awareness in an insurance company exam leans towards insurance, finance and economy news, not only general current affairs.
OICL AO Prelims Syllabus
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
English Language | Reading comprehension, cloze test, error detection, sentence improvement, para jumbles, fillers, word usage, vocabulary | Reading comprehension and cloze test |
Reasoning Ability | Puzzles, seating arrangement (linear and circular), syllogism, inequality, blood relations, direction sense, coding-decoding, order and ranking, alphanumeric series | Puzzles and seating arrangement |
Quantitative Aptitude | Simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation, percentage, ratio, averages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, speed and distance, mixtures | Simplification, data interpretation and arithmetic |
In prelims, puzzles and seating arrangement usually form the largest block in reasoning, while data interpretation and arithmetic word problems carry the most weight in quant. Since each section has only 20 minutes and a sectional cut-off, aim for balance rather than one strong section.

Insurance awareness is the part of general awareness that most candidates under-prepare. Use this checklist to build a dedicated set of notes.

The descriptive paper is qualifying. It does not add to your merit score, but failing its cut-off ends your selection.
Letter types to practise: Formal complaint, request to a bank or insurer, letter to an editor, and official communication to a customer or branch.
Essay themes to prepare: Insurance penetration in India, digital payments and fintech, climate risk and disaster insurance, health coverage, financial literacy and employment.

Professional Knowledge Syllabus for Specialists
Hindi (Rajbhasha) Officer
In the 2025 cycle, Professional Knowledge carried 100 marks for Hindi Officers, which makes it the deciding section. Prepare Hindi grammar, Hindi literature basics, translation from English to Hindi and back, official language policy, the Official Languages Act and Rules, and the terms used in official Hindi correspondence. The other mains sections (Reasoning, English, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge) carry 25 marks each.
Other Specialist Disciplines
Discipline | Professional knowledge areas to expect |
|---|---|
Accounts | Financial accounting, cost accounting, auditing, taxation, financial management |
Actuarial | Probability, statistics, financial mathematics, actuarial principles |

Topic Priority Guide
Priority | Topics | Why |
|---|---|---|
Start first | Puzzles and seating, DI, arithmetic, reading comprehension | Large share of both prelims and mains |
Build steadily | Current affairs, insurance awareness, banking awareness | Needs months of regular reading |
Revise often | Computer knowledge, static GK, vocabulary | Recall-based, easy to forget |
Practise weekly | Letter and essay writing | Has its own cut-off and needs typing speed |
This priority order is a planning suggestion based on the pattern, not an official weightage.
Overlap Between Prelims and Mains
Area | Prelims | Mains | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
English | Basic RC, cloze, errors | Longer RC, para jumbles, word usage | Read daily from the start; this feeds both stages and the descriptive paper |
Reasoning | Standard puzzles, syllogism, inequality | Complex puzzles, logical reasoning, input-output | Build puzzle speed early, then add mains-level variety |
Quantitative Aptitude | Simplification, series, DI, arithmetic | Caselet and missing DI, data sufficiency | Learn arithmetic once and apply it to DI |
General Awareness | Not tested | Current affairs, insurance, banking, static GK | Start at least four months before mains with monthly notes |
Computer Knowledge | Not tested | Fundamentals, MS Office, networking, security | Short weekly sessions are enough |
Is There a Syllabus for the Interview?
There is no prescribed syllabus for the OICL AO interview. Panels usually ask about your background, graduation subject, why you want to join a public sector insurer, and basic insurance and current affairs. Specialists should also expect questions on their discipline. Since interview marks count in the final merit, prepare for it as seriously as a written section.
