Railway GDCE
Railway GDCE is a recruitment exam, relevant to candidates preparing for Indian Railways recruitment.
The Railway GDCE (General Departmental Competitive Examination) is the in-service route for serving railway employees who want to move into Group C posts such as Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP), Technician, Junior Engineer, Station Master, Goods Train Manager and clerical posts. It is not an open exam for outside candidates. Only regular employees of the railway zone that issues the notification can apply.
This page explains how GDCE works in the current 2026-27 cycle, what the zonal notifications say, and how to prepare. Please note one correction that many pages get wrong: GDCE is run by the Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs) of individual zones, and each zone issues its own notification, so dates, vacancies and some pattern details differ from zone to zone.

Scope of this page: which GDCE are we covering
Railway employees will see several quota figures mentioned online. The Railway Board order RBE No. 12/2026, dated 10 February 2026, extends the GDCE scheme for filling the 25 percent net direct recruitment quota in Group C categories up to 31 March 2028. The zonal notifications for 2026 (Central Railway, East Coast Railway and North Central Railway) refer to this departmental quota.
This page therefore covers the Group C GDCE under the 25 percent departmental quota, in the posts the three official notifications list. Other quota percentages (for example 40, 30 or 10 percent splits that appear in older or Group B promotion schemes) do not appear in the current zonal notices we reviewed, so we have not used them. Posts such as Goods Guard are now notified as Goods Train Manager.

Eligibility in brief
Eligibility has three layers: you must be a regular employee of the notifying railway, hold the direct-recruitment qualification for the post, and fall within the age limit on the reference date.
Service status: Regular employees only. Trainees and unregularised substitutes cannot apply, and employees who resign or move to another railway during the process lose eligibility. No minimum service period is required in the notifications reviewed.
Grade rule: Employees in a lower grade than the GDCE post can apply. Employees in the same grade may apply from a non-safety to a safety post or between safety posts. You cannot apply for the post you already hold.
Qualification: Matriculation plus ITI or apprenticeship for ALP and Technicians, a diploma or degree for Junior Engineer, a degree for Station Master and Goods Train Manager, and 12th pass with at least 50 percent for clerk posts (relaxed for SC, ST and PwBD).
Category | Upper age limit |
|---|---|
UR | 42 years |
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 45 years |
SC / ST | 47 years |
The minimum age is 18. SC, ST and OBC-NCL candidates applying against unreserved vacancies get no age relaxation. For full detail, read our Railway GDCE eligibility guide.
How to apply
Applications are online only, on the RRC website of the zone. Each notification allows only one application per employee, and post preference is final once submitted.
Open the GDCE section of your zone's RRC website and choose New Registration.
Register with your employee details, personal mobile number and email. Login details arrive by SMS and email.
Fill the form, select your posts and, where asked, your ITI trade or exam group.
Upload the photograph, signature and self-attested certificates in JPEG format.
Print the application, get it forwarded by your controlling officer where the zone requires it (East Coast Railway does), and upload the signed copy.
Submit and save the application number and PDF.
The photograph and signature rules differ slightly between zones, for example photo file size limits of 70 KB or 100 KB. Follow the specification in your own notification.
Exam pattern and selection process
All zones follow a similar structure: a computer based test (CBT), followed by a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for ALP and, in East Coast Railway, Station Master, or a typing skill test for typist posts. Then come document verification and a medical examination. Wrong answers carry a deduction of one-third mark in the CBTs, and there is no negative marking in the CBAT or typing test.
Post group | CBT format | Later stages |
|---|---|---|
ALP | 100 questions; 120 minutes in NCR and ECoR (zone formats differ) | CBAT, DV, medical |
Technicians | 100 questions, 90 minutes | DV, medical |
Junior Engineer | 150 questions, 120 minutes | DV, medical |
Station Master and Goods Train Manager | 100 to 120 questions, 90 minutes | CBAT for Station Master in ECoR; DV, medical |
Clerical and typist posts | 120 questions, 90 minutes | Typing test for typist posts; DV, medical |
What this means for you: the pattern depends on your post and zone, so read the annexure for your post before you plan. Our Railway GDCE exam pattern page gives the post-wise breakdown. Older pages may still show the earlier GDCE format, so follow the current notification.
Syllabus summary
The railway bodies publish topic lists inside the notification annexures. The table gives the overview, and the Railway GDCE syllabus page lists topics in detail.
Post group | Main subjects |
|---|---|
ALP | Mathematics, Reasoning, Basic Science and Engineering, trade-specific section |
Technician | Mathematics, Reasoning, General Science, General Awareness (Grade I adds Computers) |
Junior Engineer | General Awareness, Physics and Chemistry, Computers, Environment, Technical Abilities |
Station Master, Goods Train Manager, clerks | General Awareness, Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning |
Qualifying marks and cut-off
The railway bodies do not publish a fixed cut-off in advance. The notifications state community-wise minimum qualifying percentages: 40 percent for UR, 30 percent for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25 percent for ST. Final selection is by merit, up to the number of vacancies, with normalisation when the test runs in several shifts. Our Railway GDCE cut-off page explains how to set a safe target.
How to prepare for Railway GDCE
Most candidates are working employees, so the plan has to fit around duty hours. A simple structure works well.
Weeks 1 to 4: Cover mathematics and reasoning basics from the 10th-level syllabus, and revise the technical or trade section for your post.
Weeks 5 to 8: Add general awareness and, for JE, the group-specific technical subjects. Take short sectional tests.
Final phase: Attempt full-length timed papers, analyse every mistake and keep an error log. ALP and Station Master aspirants should also practise aptitude-style tests for the CBAT.
