Railway GDCE Eligibility 2026: Who Can Apply, Age Limit and Qualification

Railway GDCE eligibility is different from most railway exams, because the exam is open only to serving railway employees. To apply you must be a regular employee of the railway zone that issues the notification, hold the educational qualification the post asks for, and be within the age limit on the reference date.

This page explains each condition using the 2026-27 notifications of Central Railway, East Coast Railway and North Central Railway, and flags where the three zones differ. Always read the clause numbers of your own notification before applying, because an application cannot be edited after submission.

The scope of the page is the Group C GDCE under the 25 percent departmental quota (Railway Board order RBE No. 12/2026).

Who can apply: service conditions

  • Regular employees only: You must be a regular employee of the railway or unit named in the notification. North Central Railway and East Coast Railway also refer to lien in that railway. Employees of the erstwhile Waltair division are included in the East Coast Railway notification.

  • No minimum service period: Central Railway and North Central Railway state that no minimum service is required (North Central Railway cites RBE 72/2024). East Coast Railway does not address it, so check with your RRC if you are newly regularised.

  • Stay with the railway: Employees who resign or are transferred to another railway during the process are not eligible.

  • Service records matter: Qualification and date of birth should be endorsed in the service sheet or HRMS record. Mismatches with the matriculation certificate are a common ground for rejection.

The grade rule

GDCE is a promotional-style route, so your current grade decides which posts you can choose.

Your position

Can you apply

Working in a lower grade or pay scale than the GDCE post

Yes, for any post whose qualification you hold

Working in the same grade, from a non-safety category

Yes, for a safety category post

Working in the same grade, from a safety category

Yes, for another safety category post

Working in a higher grade

No (stated explicitly by North Central Railway)

Applying for the post you already hold

No

Safety and non-safety classification follows the notification annexure. For instance, ALP and Station Master are listed as safety categories. Check the annexure for the category of your current post and the post you want.

Educational qualification by post

You must hold the qualification on the date the notification states, which is the closing date of the online application in most clauses. East Coast Railway uses both the notification date and the closing date in different places, so confirm the exact wording if you finish a course close to these dates. Candidates awaiting their final result should not apply.

Post

Qualification (summary)

Assistant Loco Pilot

Matriculation or SSLC plus ITI in listed trades, or matriculation plus completed apprenticeship, or a 3-year diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering instead of ITI. A degree in these disciplines is also accepted

Technician Grade III

Matriculation or SSLC plus ITI or completed apprenticeship in the listed trade. Some zones do not accept an engineering diploma in place of ITI for Level 2 technician posts

Technician Grade I (Signal)

B.Sc. in Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, IT or Instrumentation, or a diploma or degree in engineering in those streams

Junior Engineer

3-year diploma in the relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent combinations; P-Way and Civil Design posts also accept a 3-year B.Sc. in Civil. Exact streams are in the annexure

Station Master and Goods Train Manager

Degree from a recognised university

Junior Account Assistant cum Typist

Degree, with typing proficiency in English or Hindi on computer

Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist

12th pass with at least 50 percent aggregate, plus typing proficiency

Commercial Clerk cum Ticket Clerk

12th pass with at least 50 percent aggregate

Nursing Superintendent (Central Railway)

Registered nurse and midwife with a 3-year GNM course from an INC-recognised institution, or B.Sc. (Nursing)

The 50 percent condition for clerical posts does not apply to SC, ST and PwBD candidates, and the notifications also relax it for candidates holding higher qualifications. Certificates must come from a recognised board, university or institution, and the date of issue must be visible. If the certificate is issued after the closing date, you must submit marksheets showing the result date.

Age limit

Age limits are the same in all three notifications. The reference date is what changes.

Central Railway (GDCE 01/2026)

East Coast Railway

North Central Railway

01.01.2027

02.01.1985 to 01.01.2009

No age relaxation applies to SC, ST or OBC-NCL candidates who apply against unreserved vacancies. The date of birth must match the matriculation certificate and the service record, and cannot be changed later. North Central Railway's age table shows OBC as 18 to 47 in one place, which conflicts with its own clause of 45 years, so check the corrigendum if you are in that category. The notifications reviewed do not list further relaxations for PwBD candidates, so read the annexure of your zone for any special provision.

Reservation and certificates

  • SC and ST: Submit the caste certificate in the prescribed annexure format. Certificates in any other format are not accepted.

  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): Submit the OBC-NCL certificate in the prescribed format, not older than one year at document verification, along with the self-declaration annexure.

  • EWS: East Coast Railway states there is no separate EWS reservation. North Central Railway also lists no EWS reservation for vacancies, though its qualifying marks table mentions EWS, so check the annexure.

  • PwBD: Horizontal reservation applies for certain posts in the vacancy tables. Medical standards decide which benchmark disabilities are suitable for each post.

A claim made without the correct certificate is treated as unreserved.

Who is not eligible

  • Contract staff, trainees, and substitutes who have not been regularised.

  • RPF and RPSF employees.

  • Employees of cadres excluded in a particular notification, for example North Central Railway excludes Law Assistant, Catering Inspector and Accounts cadre staff.

  • Employees in a higher grade than the post.

  • Candidates who do not hold the qualification on the stated date, including those awaiting final results.

  • Employees who have resigned or moved to another railway during the process.

Medical standards and other conditions

Final selection is subject to medical fitness in the category listed against the post, such as A-1, A-2, A-3, B-1, B-2 or C-1, which are defined in the Indian Railway Medical Manual. ALP and Station Master candidates must also produce a vision certificate at the CBAT and, where relevant, a LASIK self-declaration. Candidates need their own active mobile number and email, because all communication is by SMS and email.

Fee and documents

None of the notifications reviewed mentions an application fee. At document verification, keep original documents plus two self-attested sets, a relieving letter or e-call letter, a valid photo ID, and certificates in the prescribed formats.
