Railway GDCE Exam Pattern 2026: Post-Wise CBT, CBAT and Marking Scheme
The Railway GDCE exam pattern changes with the post and, in some details, with the zone. All zonal notifications in the 2026-27 cycle use a computer based test (CBT) as the main stage. Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) and, in East Coast Railway, Station Master candidates add a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), typist posts add a typing skill test, and every post ends with document verification and a medical examination.
This page puts the pattern of each post group in one place, using the Central Railway, East Coast Railway and North Central Railway notifications. Read the table for your zone and post, then use the strategy section to plan your time.

Exam pattern at a glance
Post | Stages | Zone notes |
|---|---|---|
ALP | CBT, CBAT, document verification, medical | Merit weightage differs between zones |
Technician Grade III and Grade I | CBT, document verification, medical | Central Railway adds a qualifying trade part |
Junior Engineer | CBT, document verification, medical | Technical section chosen by exam group |
Station Master | CBT, CBAT (East Coast Railway), document verification, medical | 100 or 120 questions by zone |
Goods Train Manager | CBT, document verification, medical | 100 or 120 questions by zone |
Clerical and typist posts | CBT, typing test for typist posts, document verification, medical | Typing test is qualifying only |
Marking scheme and negative marking
Every correct answer in the CBT carries one mark. One-third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer in the notifications reviewed (Central Railway, East Coast Railway and North Central Railway). An unanswered question carries no deduction. There is no negative marking in the CBAT or the typing skill test.
The Junior Engineer paper in Central Railway and North Central Railway is a 150-mark paper. The East Coast Railway table describes the JE total differently, and its own note calls the section distribution indicative, so check the annexure of the notification you applied under.
ALP pattern
Zone | CBT format | CBAT and merit |
|---|---|---|
East Coast Railway | 100 questions, 120 minutes. Mathematics, Reasoning, Basic Science and Engineering and Trade-specific section, about 25 each | CBAT qualifying with minimum T-score 42 per battery. Merit 50 percent CBT and 50 percent CBAT |
North Central Railway | 100 questions, 100 marks, 120 minutes. Same four parts of about 25 each; trade part chosen at application | Shortlisting for CBAT at eight times the vacancies per community. Merit 50 percent CBT and 50 percent CBAT |
Central Railway (GDCE 01/2026) | Part A: 100 questions, 90 minutes (Mathematics, Reasoning, Basic Science and Engineering, Computers, General Awareness). Part B: 75 trade questions, 60 minutes, qualifying at 35 percent | CBAT with minimum 42 in each battery. Merit 70 percent Part A and 30 percent CBAT |
The CBAT is a qualifying aptitude test. You must clear each test battery separately, and there is no relaxation. Candidates with a vision certificate and LASIK self-declaration, where the notification asks for it, must produce them at the test.
Technician pattern
Grade | Questions and time | Section distribution |
|---|---|---|
Technician Grade III | 100 questions, 90 minutes (North Central and East Coast Railway) | Mathematics 25, Reasoning 25, General Science 40, General Awareness 10 |
Technician Grade I (Signal) | 100 questions, 90 minutes (North Central Railway) | General Awareness 10, Reasoning 15, Computers 20, Mathematics 20, Basic Science and Engineering 35 |
In Central Railway's notification, the ALP and Technician paper uses Part A (100 questions, 90 minutes) plus a qualifying trade-based Part B (75 questions, 60 minutes, minimum 35 percent). Part A marks decide the Technician merit once Part B is cleared.
Junior Engineer pattern
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
General Awareness | 15 | 15 |
Physics and Chemistry (up to 10th CBSE) | 15 | 15 |
Basics of Computers and Applications | 10 | 10 |
Basics of Environment and Pollution Control | 10 | 10 |
Technical Abilities | 100 | 100 |
Total | 150 | 150 |
Time allowed is 120 minutes, or 160 minutes for PwBD candidates with a scribe, and a virtual calculator is available on screen. Technical Abilities follows the group you choose in the application: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics and allied branches. The notification says the technical syllabus follows an earlier JE annexure.
Station Master, Goods Train Manager and clerical posts
Zone | Questions and time | Distribution |
|---|---|---|
Central Railway | 100 questions, 90 minutes | General Awareness 40, Mathematics 30, Reasoning 30 |
East Coast Railway | 120 questions, 90 minutes | General Awareness 50, Mathematics 35, Reasoning 35 |
North Central Railway (clerical) | 120 questions, 90 minutes | General Awareness 50, Mathematics 35, Reasoning 35 |
East Coast Railway adds a CBAT for Station Master, with merit set at 70 percent CBT and 30 percent CBAT. For Junior Clerk cum Typist, the typing skill test is qualifying only: 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi, without editing tools or spell check. Marks from the typing test are not added to merit.
Qualifying marks and later stages
Category | Minimum qualifying marks |
|---|---|
UR | 40 percent |
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 30 percent |
SC | 30 percent |
ST | 25 percent |
North Central Railway also lists 40 percent for EWS in its qualifying table, while East Coast Railway says there is no separate EWS reservation. PwBD candidates may get a relaxation of 2 marks if their vacancies remain unfilled. For CBAT and typing test shortlisting, candidates up to eight times the vacancies per community are called. After that, as many candidates as there are vacancies are called for document verification, followed by a medical examination.
Final merit calculation
For multi-shift papers, scores are normalised so that easy and difficult shifts do not penalise candidates. The notifications describe percentile-based normalisation (East Coast Railway) and a merit index formula for JE with a qualifying mark of 40, an assigned score of 350 for it, and 900 for the mean of the top 0.1 percent or top 10 candidates, whichever is larger.
Post | Merit basis |
|---|---|
ALP (East Coast and North Central) | 50 percent CBT and 50 percent CBAT |
ALP (Central Railway) | 70 percent Part A and 30 percent CBAT |
Station Master (East Coast) | 70 percent CBT and 30 percent CBAT |
Others | CBT score; typing test is qualifying only |
Worked example (illustrative only): in a 50:50 ALP merit, a candidate with a CBT score equivalent to 70 and a CBAT score equivalent to 60 would have a merit score of 65. The real formula uses the normalised scores in the notification. If two candidates tie, the older candidate ranks higher, and if the age is also the same, the alphabetical order of the name decides.
What the pattern means for you
One-third negative marking: Three wrong answers cancel one right answer. Guess only when you can remove at least one option.
ALP is a two-test race: Half the merit in two zones comes from the CBAT, so aptitude practice is as important as the CBT.
JE time goes to the technical section: 100 of 150 questions are technical. Finish the 50 general questions fast, in about 35 to 40 minutes, and keep the rest for technical.
SM and clerical papers reward general awareness: It carries 40 to 50 marks, and it is the section where daily reading pays off.
Time management and exam-day strategy
In a 90-minute, 120-question paper you have under 45 seconds a question. Attempt mathematics and reasoning questions you can solve quickly first, then general awareness, and return to the long mathematics questions last. For ALP, take one trade question at a time, because the trade section is the easiest to lose through carelessness.
