RBI Security Guard Eligibility: Age, Education and Rules
RBI Security Guard eligibility is narrower than most bank recruitment drives. In the last cycle, the Reserve Bank of India invited applications only from ex-servicemen, with a Class 10 qualification and an age limit that depends on category and years of service.
The rules below are from the last notified cycle (January 2021) as reported by news and exam-preparation sources. We could not open the official notification text during research, and no current notification could be confirmed, so treat every condition as indicative until you read the latest notice on the RBI recruitment portal.
Table of Contents
Eligibility at a Glance
Criterion | Last cycle (indicative) |
|---|---|
Nationality | Indian citizen |
Background | Ex-serviceman with experience of handling arms and ammunition |
Education | Class 10 or equivalent from a recognised board |
Age | Base upper limit by category, extended by service years, ceiling of 45 years |
Fitness | Qualifying physical test and pre-recruitment medical examination |
Service Background
The posts were reserved for ex-servicemen. Reports on the 2021 drive add that candidates should have actually served in the armed forces and handled arms and ammunition. Ex-servicemen who passed the qualifying examination from outside the recruitment zone, before or after leaving service, were also reported as eligible.
If you are still serving, check whether the notification accepts applicants who are due to be discharged within a stated period. This is not confirmed for this post, so do not assume it.
Educational Qualification
The qualification reported was a pass in Class 10 (matriculation or equivalent) from a recognised board. Graduates and holders of higher qualifications were reported as not eligible, which surprises many candidates. Army Special Certificate of Education holders were treated as matriculates in an older RBI Security Guard notice, so read the new notification for how service-linked certificates are treated.
Age Limit and Relaxation
Several coaching pages word the age rule inconsistently, and some show a minimum of 25 years. The structure below follows the RBI's own older Security Guard notices and the 2021 reports: a base upper age by category, extended by armed forces service, with an overall ceiling.
Category | Base upper age limit (reported) |
|---|---|
General and EWS | 25 years |
OBC | 28 years |
SC and ST | 30 years |
The limit is then extended by the number of years you served in the armed forces plus 3 years, subject to a maximum of 45 years for all categories. The age was counted as on a reference date given in the notification; for the 2021 cycle, reports mention 1 January 2021.
As an illustration only, a General category ex-serviceman with 15 years of service would get 25 + 15 + 3 = 43 years. Confirm the exact formula and reference date in the new notification before you calculate your own eligibility.
Age is checked against the date of birth on your school leaving certificate or an equivalent record, so make sure it matches your application.
Choosing an Office
Recruitment was run office by office, and you apply for the office within your region. The 2021 notification listed 241 posts across 18 offices.

New Delhi | 17 | Bhubaneswar | 8 |

Documents to Keep Ready
Discharge papers: Proof of your service record and ex-serviceman status.
Age and education proof: School leaving certificate, transfer certificate, matriculation certificate or an equivalent record named in the notification.
Category certificate: For SC, ST, OBC and EWS claims. OBC candidates need a non-creamy layer declaration in the format and date range stated in the notice.

Who May Not Be Eligible
Non-ex-servicemen: Civilian candidates, however fit, were outside the criteria.
Graduates: Higher qualification than Class 10 was reported as a bar.
Over-age candidates: Anyone beyond the category limit plus service extension, or above 45 years.
Medically or physically unfit candidates: Failing the physical test or medical examination ends the candidature.
