RBI Security Guard Exam Pattern: Marks, Time and Stages
The RBI Security Guard exam pattern has two parts that matter: a single online test that decides your rank, and a set of later stages that decide whether you stay in the race. Knowing how marks and time are distributed helps you plan each minute of the test.
The details below come from the last notified cycle, published in January 2021, as reported by news and exam-preparation sources. We could not open the official notification text during research, so the test details are marked as reported. Compare them with the new notification before you rely on them.
Table of Contents
Selection Stages at a Glance
Stage | Format | Nature | Role in final list |
|---|---|---|---|
1. Online test | Objective, computer based | Merit | Decides shortlisting and rank |
2. Physical test | On-ground fitness test | Qualifying | Pass or fail, no marks added |
3. Verification | Documents and biometrics | Eligibility check | Confirms your claim |
4. Medical | Pre-recruitment examination | Fitness check | Needed for final selection |
Online Test Pattern
Test | Questions | Marks | Language |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | 40 | 40 | English and Hindi |
Numerical ability | 30 | 30 | English and Hindi |
English | 30 | 30 | English |
Total | 100 | 100 | 80 minutes (reported) |
One point to verify: some sources do not agree on the duration, and we could not confirm from an official document whether each section has its own timer. Check your call letter and the on-screen instructions in the mock interface for the actual rule.
Marking Scheme
Marks per question: One mark for each correct answer, since 100 questions carry 100 marks.
Negative marking: Not applied, as reported. Confirm this in the notification, because it changes how you treat guesses.
Sectional cut-off: Not reported for the last cycle. The online test marks decide the merit order.
Older pages may still show a different pattern or an incorrect duration, so follow the official notification when it is released.
What the Pattern Means for You
Average time per question: 80 minutes for 100 questions is 48 seconds each. Plan for quick, confident answers rather than long calculations.
Reasoning first: Forty percent of the paper sits in one section, so a weak reasoning score is hard to recover elsewhere.
Guess policy: If no negative marking applies, leave nothing blank. If it does, attempt only the questions where you can remove at least two options.
English is a scoring section: Thirty questions on grammar and vocabulary can be solved fast if your basics are strong.
Bilingual papers: If you pick Hindi for reasoning and numerical ability, practise in the same language to avoid reading delays.
Physical Test and Later Stages
The physical test was reported as qualifying only. You are called for it after the online test and must clear it to stay on the merit list. The standards are printed in the notification, so we do not list them here. Pay attention to the age proof, category certificates and discharge documents you are asked to bring, as they are checked at this stage.
Biometric verification, document checks and a medical examination follow. A mismatch in details between your application and your documents can cancel a candidature, so keep everything consistent from the day you apply.
How the Final List Is Made
As reported for the last cycle, the merit list is prepared from online test marks among those who qualify in the physical test, and final selection depends on verification and the medical examination. There was no interview. Because office-wise hiring was followed, ranks are compared among candidates of the same office.
Since ranking rests on one test, every mark counts. The cut-off page explains how to set a safe target score.
Time Management in the Test
This is a practice split, not an official rule. Adjust it after your first few mocks.
Section | Suggested time | Approach |
|---|---|---|
Reasoning | About 30 minutes | Start with series, coding and relations; skip long puzzles at first pass |
Numerical ability | About 28 minutes | Solve calculation-light questions first |
English | About 15 minutes | Do grammar and vocabulary before the passage |
Review | About 7 minutes | Revisit marked questions |
To rehearse this in the real format, attempt full-length RBI Security Guard mock tests on Testkart and review the section-wise time report. Topic lists for each section are on the syllabus page, and the recruitment overview covers the wider process. Official updates appear on the RBI recruitment portal.
