RRB JE EE Syllabus 2026: CBT 1 and CBT 2 Topics
The RRB JE EE syllabus has two layers. CBT 1 is a general screening paper, and CBT 2 adds a 100-mark Electrical technical section on top of four general sections. If you are preparing for the Junior Engineer (Electrical) post in CEN 04/2026, this page lists what to study in each stage and where to begin.
The railway boards name the tests, questions and marks in the notification, but they do not publish a detailed topic list for every branch. The topics below are built from the stage-wise structure in the notification and from the subjects that the Electrical diploma curriculum and earlier JE papers have consistently covered. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list, and read the official RRB notification for any change.

Key points to know
Technical carries the weight: 100 of the 150 CBT 2 marks come from Electrical Engineering, and CBT 2 decides merit.
General Science is Class 10 level: Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences are expected up to CBSE Class 10.
Negative marking applies: One-third of the marks is deducted for each wrong answer, so topic accuracy matters more than coverage alone.
Older syllabus pages mislead: Some pages show the technical syllabus of another branch under an Electrical heading. Check that every list you follow is for Electrical and Allied Engineering.
CBT 1 syllabus
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Mathematics | Number system, BODMAS, fractions and decimals, LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentages, profit and loss, time and work, time, speed and distance, simple and compound interest, mensuration, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, elementary statistics | Arithmetic topics, then mensuration and algebra |
General Intelligence and Reasoning | Analogies, classification, number and letter series, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, syllogism, Venn diagrams, puzzles, seating arrangement, data interpretation, statement and conclusion | Series, coding-decoding and analogies |
General Awareness | Current affairs, Indian polity, history, geography, economy, sports, important books and awards, science and technology news, Indian Railways basics | Static basics, then the last 6 to 12 months of current affairs |
General Science | Physics (motion, force, work and energy, electricity, light), Chemistry (matter, acids and bases, metals, carbon compounds), Life Sciences (cells, human body, nutrition, diseases), all up to Class 10 | NCERT Class 9 and 10 Science |
Mathematics and General Science together carry 60 of the 100 marks in CBT 1, so they deserve the largest share of study time. Arithmetic questions are usually the most scoring, and Electrical candidates often find the physics portion easy because of their branch.
CBT 2 general sections
General Awareness (15 marks): Same preparation as CBT 1, with more focus on science and technology and current events.
Physics and Chemistry (15 marks): Class 10 to Class 12 basics such as units, motion, heat, electricity, atomic structure, chemical reactions and periodic properties.
Basics of Computers and Applications (10 marks): Computer hardware, memory, operating systems, MS Office, internet and email, networking basics, number systems and common security terms.
Basics of Environment and Pollution Control (10 marks): Ecosystems, types of pollution, causes and control measures, climate change, renewable energy, waste management and environmental policies.
CBT 2 Electrical technical syllabus
Questions are at diploma level. The table groups the commonly asked areas under the Electrical and Allied Engineering group.
Core circuits and fundamentals
Basic electrical concepts: Resistance, inductance, capacitance, units, Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's laws, series and parallel networks, star-delta conversion.
Network theorems: Superposition, Thevenin, Norton and maximum power transfer.
Magnetic circuits: Flux, MMF, reluctance, magnetic materials, hysteresis, self and mutual induction.
AC fundamentals: Sinusoidal waveforms, RMS and average values, RL, RC and RLC circuits, resonance, power factor, polyphase systems.
Machines and measurements
Electrical machines: DC generators and motors, transformers, three-phase induction motors, synchronous machines, fractional kW motors, starting and speed control.
Measurement and instruments: Moving coil and moving iron meters, wattmeter, energy meter, bridges, range extension, errors, CT and PT.
Power systems and applications
Generation, transmission and distribution: Power plants, transmission line parameters, distribution schemes, power factor improvement, tariffs, faults, switchgear, relays, circuit breakers, lightning arresters, cables.
Estimation and costing: Wiring schemes, earthing, load calculation, Indian Electricity rules.
Utilisation of electrical energy: Illumination, electric heating, welding, electroplating, electric drives and traction basics.
Basic electronics: Diodes, transistors, rectifiers, amplifiers, logic gates and power electronics basics.
Electrical machines, circuit theory and power systems usually supply the largest block of questions, so finish these before smaller topics such as estimation and traction.
Overlap between CBT 1 and CBT 2
Area | CBT 1 | CBT 2 | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
General Awareness | 15 marks | 15 marks | One set of notes serves both stages |
Science | General Science, 30 marks | Physics and Chemistry, 15 marks | Study Class 10 science once, add Class 11 and 12 basics for CBT 2 |
Mathematics and Reasoning | 55 marks | Not a separate section | Keep practising for CBT 1, then shift time to technical |
Technical Electrical | Not tested | 100 marks | Start early, because it takes the longest |
Is there an interview syllabus?
No. The selection stages after the two computer-based tests are document verification and a medical examination, so there is nothing to prepare for an interview.
How to cover the syllabus
Weeks 1 to 6: Learn circuits, machines and magnetic circuits in order, with short notes for each chapter. Revise Class 10 science alongside.
Weeks 3 to 8: Add Mathematics and Reasoning practice for 60 to 90 minutes daily, and begin monthly current affairs notes.
Weeks 7 to 10: Cover power systems, measurements, estimation and electronics. Start topic tests and 20-minute sectional tests.
Weeks 11 to 12: Cover computers and environment, then switch to full-length mocks.
Final phase: Take timed mocks, analyse them the same day and revise your error log.
