Notification and revisions in CEN 04/2026

The indicative notice for CEN 04/2026 came out in July 2026, and the detailed notification followed on 13 August 2026. A corrigendum later added Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant vacancies and raised the total count. The CBT 1 date was also changed by an official notice dated 2 October 2026.

Many older pages still show the first vacancy count or the earlier exam date, so follow the latest official notice rather than a saved copy of the notification.

Vacancies

Reported totals for CEN 04/2026 differ because of the corrigendum: about 3,993 in the original notification and 4,029 after revision, for JE, DMS and CMA together. Some sites also quoted 4,098 from the earlier indicative notice. One source reports about 599 Electrical department vacancies, but post-wise and RRB-wise Electrical figures are given in the annexures of the official CEN, and we have not been able to confirm them independently.

Treat every figure as provisional. Vacancies can change, and they differ by RRB and by community. Check the annexures of the official notification before deciding which RRB to choose.

Eligibility

Educational qualification

Electrical candidates need a three-year Diploma in Electrical Engineering from a recognised institution, or a degree (B.E. or B.Tech) in the same discipline. The notification lists the exact allied streams for each JE category, so match your branch name against it. Your final result must be available by the closing date; candidates awaiting results are not eligible.

Exam pattern

The written exam has two computer-based tests. CBT 1 screens candidates, and CBT 2 is the technical, merit-deciding stage.

Stage

Questions

Marks

Time

CBT 1

100

100

90 minutes

CBT 2

150

150

120 minutes

Each wrong answer costs one-third of the marks of that question, in both stages. CBT 1 covers Mathematics, Reasoning, General Awareness and General Science. CBT 2 carries 100 marks of Electrical technical questions plus General Awareness, Physics and Chemistry, Computer Basics, and Environment and Pollution Control.

Syllabus summary

CBT 1 follows a Class 10 to diploma-level general paper. CBT 2 Technical Abilities for Electrical typically covers basic electrical concepts, circuit laws, magnetic circuits, AC fundamentals, measurements, electrical machines, generation, transmission and distribution, estimation and costing, utilisation of electrical energy and basic electronics. The railway boards publish stage-wise test names and marks, not a full topic list for every branch, so treat topic lists as a working checklist.

Selection process

  1. CBT 1: qualifying and shortlisting only. Marks are normalised, and roughly 15 times the community-wise vacancies are usually shortlisted for CBT 2.

  2. CBT 2: the main merit stage, with minimum qualifying marks of 40% (UR, EWS), 30% (OBC-NCL, SC) and 25% (ST), subject to the notification.

  3. Document verification: done for candidates in merit, based on vacancies and your RRB and post preferences.

  4. Medical examination: the medical standard depends on the post. There is no interview.

Salary and career growth

JE is a Pay Level 6 post with an initial basic pay of Rs. 35,400 per month. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance, travel allowance and other railway allowances are added on top. The in-hand amount depends on the city and allowances, so any in-hand figure you see is an estimate, not an official number. Electrical JEs work in areas such as traction distribution, train lighting and air conditioning, signalling power and workshops, and can progress through departmental promotions.

How to prepare for RRB JE Electrical

  • Start with CBT 2 technical: It is 100 of 150 marks and decides merit. Build circuits, machines and power systems first.

  • Keep CBT 1 skills warm: Practise Mathematics and Reasoning daily, because CBT 1 decides whether CBT 2 happens at all.

  • Cover the general sections in CBT 2: Computer basics, environment and Physics and Chemistry are quick marks if prepared in advance.

  • Revise from an error log: Write down every wrong or guessed answer and revisit it weekly.

  • Use previous papers: They show the level of the technical questions.

You can also explore other Railway exams if you are preparing for more than one board exam.

Cut-off reference

RRB JE cut-offs are published RRB-wise and category-wise after each stage, and they vary with difficulty, vacancies, applicants and normalisation. Treat previous cut-offs as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin above them.
