Railway Recruitment Board Non-Technical Popular Categories

Recruits for various non-technical posts like Junior Clerk, Accounts Clerk, Goods Guard, Station Master, etc.

RRB NTPC Study Material

The Railway Recruitment Boards have announced 5,165 vacancies for RRB NTPC 2026 through two short notices released on 21 September 2026. If you are a graduate or have passed Class 12, this is one of the few central government recruitments where a single exam can lead to a clerical, commercial, accounts or operating job in Indian Railways.

This guide explains the complete RRB NTPC exam in one place: the posts on offer, who can apply, how selection works, the CBT pattern, syllabus, salary and a practical preparation plan. Wherever the detailed notification is still awaited, we have clearly marked which details come from the 2026 short notices and which follow the pattern of earlier cycles, so you know exactly what to verify later.

Latest update (23 September 2026): Only the indicative (short) notices for CEN 06/2026 (Graduate) and CEN 07/2026 (Undergraduate) are out. The detailed CENs, which will confirm eligibility, fee, exam pattern and RRB-wise vacancies, are expected before the application windows open. Always cross-check with the official portal, rrbapply.gov.in.

What Is the RRB NTPC Exam?

RRB NTPC stands for Railway Recruitment Board Non-Technical Popular Categories. It is a recruitment exam conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards under the Ministry of Railways to fill non-technical posts such as clerks, ticket clerks, accounts assistants and train managers.

The recruitment runs at two levels, each with its own Centralised Employment Notification (CEN):

  • Graduate level: For candidates with a bachelor's degree. In 2026, these posts fall under Pay Level 5 and Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC).

  • Undergraduate (UG) level: For candidates who have passed Class 12. In 2026, these posts fall under Pay Level 2 and Level 3.

Both levels follow a similar selection structure, but the difficulty of the second-stage CBT and the posts on offer differ.

Fewer seats usually mean tighter competition and higher cut-offs. In practical terms, CBT 2 accuracy will matter more than ever, because small score differences will decide ranks.

Is Station Master Included in RRB NTPC 2026?

No. Based on the 2026 short notices, Station Master and Traffic Assistant are not among the notified posts. This matters because these were the only NTPC posts that required the Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) in earlier cycles. Unless the detailed CEN adds them, CBAT is not expected to be part of this cycle.

What Each NTPC Post Involves

Your post preferences and merit together decide your final allotment, so understand each role before filling the form.

  • Goods Train Manager: Earlier known as Goods Guard. Works on goods trains, coordinating with the loco pilot and stations and handling safety duties during the run. The role involves shift work and travel.

  • Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor: Supervises ticketing, reservation and commercial activities at stations.

  • Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist: Handles accounts work such as bills, payments and records in the Accounts department.

  • Senior Clerk cum Typist: Manages office administration, files, correspondence and records.

  • Commercial cum Ticket Clerk: Works at booking and reservation counters, issuing tickets and assisting passengers.

  • Trains Clerk: Maintains records related to train and wagon movement, usually at stations and yards.

  • Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist: Perform clerical and accounts-related typing and record-keeping work in railway offices.

The final criteria will appear in the detailed CENs. The table below combines the 2026 short notices with the rules followed in previous cycles.

Useful tip: Graduate and Undergraduate recruitments are separate notifications. In previous cycles, graduates could apply to both, since they also meet the Class 12 requirement. If the 2026 CENs allow this again, applying to both levels gives you two chances with largely the same preparation. Note that you can select only one RRB under each CEN.

RRB NTPC Selection Process

Selection happens in stages, and each stage filters candidates for the next.

  1. CBT 1 (First Stage): A common screening test for all posts at a level. Marks are not counted in the final merit.

  2. CBT 2 (Second Stage): The main merit-deciding test. Around 20 times the vacancies were shortlisted from CBT 1 in earlier cycles.

  3. Typing Skill Test: Only for typist posts. It is qualifying in nature.

  4. Document Verification (DV): Candidates are called as per merit and post preference.

  5. Medical Examination: Candidates must meet the medical standard prescribed for the allotted post.

RRB NTPC Exam Pattern

Marking Scheme and Qualifying Marks

  • Correct answer: +1 mark

  • Wrong answer: 1/3 mark deducted

  • Unattempted question: No deduction

  • Normalisation: Scores are normalised because the exam runs across multiple shifts.

  • Minimum qualifying marks (earlier cycles): UR and EWS 40%, OBC (NCL) 30%, SC 30%, ST 25%. These may be reduced by 2% for PwBD candidates if there is a shortage.

How Negative Marking Should Shape Your Attempts

A blind guess on a four-option question gives you no benefit on average, because the expected gain (1/4 × 1) is cancelled by the expected loss (3/4 × 1/3). If you can eliminate even one option confidently, the odds turn in your favour.

For example, if you attempt 90 questions in CBT 2 and get 78 right and 12 wrong, your score is 78 − 4 = 74. Attempting fewer questions with better accuracy often beats attempting everything.

Typing Skill Test

The typing test applies to Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist and Senior Clerk cum Typist. In earlier cycles, candidates had to type 30 words per minute in English or 25 words per minute in Hindi on a computer, without editing tools or spell check. It is qualifying only, so it does not add to your merit, but failing it ends your candidature for that post.

RRB NTPC Syllabus

All three subjects are common to CBT 1 and CBT 2. What changes is the depth and difficulty of questions.

Current affairs, Indian history and freedom struggle, geography of India and the world, Indian polity, Indian economy, general science up to Class 10, art and culture, sports, computer basics, government schemes, important organisations

RRB NTPC Preparation Strategy

With exam dates not yet announced, a phased approach works best. Adjust the timeline once the CBT schedule is out.

Phase 1: Build the Foundation

  • Start with the syllabus and previous papers: Solve one previous-year paper untimed to see which topics appear most often.

  • Cover Mathematics basics first: Percentage, ratio and averages feed into many other chapters.

  • Begin a daily GK routine: Spend 30 to 45 minutes on current affairs and one static GK topic every day.

Phase 2: Practise Topic by Topic

  • Take sectional tests: Attempt topic-wise tests after finishing each chapter.

  • Maintain an error log: Note every mistake with its reason, such as a concept gap, a calculation slip or misreading the question.

Phase 3: Full-Length Mock Tests

  • Simulate the real exam: Attempt full mocks in a single 90-minute sitting.

  • Analyse every mock: Spend as much time reviewing a mock as taking it.

  • Shift focus to CBT 2: Once you consistently clear CBT 1-level mocks, move to CBT 2-level practice, since that stage decides merit.

If you are applying for a typist post, practise typing for 15 to 20 minutes daily from the start rather than leaving it until after CBT 2.

How to Use RRB NTPC Mock Tests Effectively

After each mock, check three things: section-wise accuracy, questions you attempted but got wrong, and time spent on questions you eventually skipped.
