RRB NTPC Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Relaxation

RRB NTPC eligibility depends on three main conditions: your educational qualification, your age on the cut-off date, and your nationality. Graduates can apply for Graduate-level posts, and Class 12 pass candidates can apply for Undergraduate-level posts. Certain posts also need typing proficiency and a specific medical standard.

The Railway Recruitment Boards have announced 5,165 vacancies for RRB NTPC 2026, with 3,477 Graduate posts under CEN 06/2026 and 1,688 Undergraduate posts under CEN 07/2026. Applications are tentatively scheduled to open in October 2026. This guide explains every eligibility condition, the age relaxation rules, the medical standards for each post and the mistakes that cause applications to be rejected, so you can confirm your eligibility before you apply.

RRB NTPC Educational Qualification

Graduate-Level Posts

You need a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent qualification, from a recognised university. Any stream is accepted, whether arts, science, commerce or engineering. Previous NTPC notifications did not set a minimum percentage for graduation.

Undergraduate-Level Posts

You need to have passed Class 12 (+2 stage), or an equivalent examination, from a recognised board. In previous cycles, candidates also needed at least 50% aggregate marks in Class 12. The 50% condition did not apply to:

  • SC and ST candidates

  • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)

  • Ex-Servicemen

  • Candidates who hold a qualification higher than Class 12, such as a degree

This last exemption matters for graduates. If you have a degree, your Class 12 percentage does not block you from applying to Undergraduate posts.

Final-Year Students and Candidates Awaiting Results

This is where many applicants go wrong. Previous NTPC notifications required candidates to hold the prescribed qualification by the closing date of online registration. Candidates awaiting their final results were not eligible.

For 2026, the tentative closing dates are 6 November 2026 (Graduate) and 13 November 2026 (Undergraduate). If you are in the final year of your degree and your result will not be declared by the closing date, you would not meet the Graduate requirement under the previous rules. You may, however, still be eligible for Undergraduate posts on the basis of your Class 12 result.

Typing Proficiency

Typing proficiency in English or Hindi is required for the four typist posts. You do not need a typing certificate to apply. Instead, your speed is tested through a Typing Skill Test after CBT 2. In previous cycles, the required speed was 30 words per minute in English or 25 words per minute in Hindi on a computer. Eligible PwBD candidates could be exempted from the test with a certificate from the competent medical board.

RRB NTPC Age Limit 2026

The 2026 short notices state that age will be calculated as on 1 January 2027, with the exact limits to be given in the detailed CENs. Based on the standard rules and current reports, the age limits are expected to be:

Level

Minimum Age

Maximum Age (UR)

Graduate posts

18 years

33 years

Undergraduate posts

18 years

30 years

Will the One-Time Age Relaxation Continue?

In the previous cycle (CEN 06/2025 and CEN 07/2025), the upper age limits were raised by three years as a one-time relaxation, to 36 years for Graduate posts and 33 years for Undergraduate posts. The 2026 short notices do not mention whether this relaxation will continue.

If you are between 33 and 36 years old (Graduate) or between 30 and 33 years old (Undergraduate), do not assume you are either eligible or ineligible. Wait for the detailed CEN before deciding.

How to Check Your Age

Calculate your age as on 1 January 2027 using the date of birth on your Class 10 certificate. For example, if you were born on 15 March 1995, you will be 31 years old on 1 January 2027. You would be within the expected Graduate limit but above the expected Undergraduate limit for UR candidates. The detailed CEN will also give the exact date-of-birth range for each level, so confirm your eligibility against it.

RRB NTPC Age Relaxation

Relaxation is added to the upper age limit. The table below shows the relaxations given in previous NTPC notifications.

Category

Relaxation in Upper Age Limit

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)

3 years

SC / ST

5 years

PwBD (UR / OBC / SC-ST)

10 / 13 / 15 years

Ex-Servicemen (more than 6 months of service)

Age minus years of defence service, plus 3 years, compared with the category limit

Candidates domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989 (UR / OBC / SC-ST)

5 / 8 / 10 years

Widowed, divorced or judicially separated women who have not remarried (UR / OBC / SC-ST)

5 / 8 / 10 years

Serving Group C and erstwhile Group D railway staff, casual labour and substitutes with at least 3 years of service (UR and EWS / OBC / SC-ST)

Up to 40 / 43 / 45 years

Staff of quasi-administrative railway offices (canteens, co-operative societies, institutes)

Length of service or 5 years, whichever is less

Important Rules About Age Relaxation

  • Relaxations are not cumulative. If you qualify for relaxation on more than one ground, you get the highest single relaxation, not the total of all of them.

  • Reserved category candidates applying against UR vacancies get no relaxation. Relaxation applies only when you apply against a vacancy reserved for your category.

  • PwBD candidates applying against UR vacancies get only the relaxation applicable to PwBD (UR).

  • Certificates are essential. Relaxation is allowed only if you submit the required category or service certificate in the prescribed format.

Nationality Requirement

To apply for RRB NTPC, you must be one of the following:

  • A citizen of India

  • A subject of Nepal or Bhutan

  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of settling permanently

  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma (Myanmar), Sri Lanka, Vietnam or specified East African countries (such as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania) with the intention of settling permanently in India

Candidates in all categories except Indian citizens need a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

RRB NTPC Medical Standards

Medical fitness is checked after document verification, but it affects which posts you should choose at the application stage. In previous notifications, the RRB made it clear that a candidate found medically unfit for the allotted post would not be offered an alternative post.

Medical Standard

2026 Posts

What It Involves

A-2

Goods Train Manager

Strict vision standard, with tests for colour vision, binocular vision, night vision and myopic vision

A-3

Trains Clerk

Strict vision standard with similar tests

B-2

Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk

Moderate vision standard

C-2

JAA, Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist

Least strict standard among NTPC posts

Before you choose posts: In previous notifications, candidates who had undergone LASIK or similar eye surgery were not eligible for posts requiring A-1, A-2 or A-3 standards. If you wear glasses or have had eye surgery, get your eyesight checked before selecting Goods Train Manager or Trains Clerk.

Can You Apply for Both Graduate and Undergraduate Posts?

The Graduate and Undergraduate recruitments are separate CENs. In previous cycles, graduates were allowed to apply to both, since they also meet the Class 12 requirement. If the 2026 CENs follow the same approach, this gives you two separate chances.

Keep two limits in mind:

  • One RRB per CEN: You can apply to only one RRB under each notification. Multiple applications under the same CEN can lead to all of them being rejected.

  • Age limits differ: A 31-year-old UR graduate may meet the Graduate age limit but not the Undergraduate one, unless a relaxation applies.

Common RRB NTPC Eligibility Mistakes That Lead to Rejection

  • Applying before the result is declared: The qualification must be complete by the closing date of registration.

  • Date of birth mismatch: The date of birth in your application must match your Class 10 certificate. Previous notifications did not allow changes after submission.

  • Aadhaar details not matching: The 2026 notices advise that the name and date of birth in Aadhaar should match your Class 10 certificate. Update Aadhaar before applying if needed.

  • Invalid category certificates: OBC (NCL) and EWS certificates must be valid and in the format prescribed by the CEN.

  • Choosing posts without checking medical standards: Failing the medical standard for your allotted post ends your candidature for it.

  • Claiming relaxation against UR vacancies: Reserved category relaxation does not apply to unreserved vacancies.

RRB NTPC Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply

  • Degree or Class 12 certificate and mark sheets available

  • Age within the limit as on 1 January 2027, after any applicable relaxation

  • Valid category, PwBD or Ex-Servicemen certificate, if applicable

  • Aadhaar details matching your Class 10 certificate

  • Eyesight checked against the medical standard of your preferred posts

  • Typing practice started, if you plan to choose typist posts

  • One RRB selected for each CEN

Once you know you are eligible, the next step is preparation. The application window is also a good time to begin, because CBT dates have not yet been announced.

RRB NTPC eligibility for 2026 comes down to a degree or Class 12 pass, the age limit as on 1 January 2027 and the nationality condition, along with typing and medical requirements for specific posts. The biggest open question is whether last cycle's one-time age relaxation will continue, so check the detailed CEN before ruling yourself in or out.
