RRB Section Controller Exam Pattern 2026: CBT and CBAT

The RRB Section Controller exam pattern under CEN No. 03/2026 has four stages. First comes a single Computer Based Test (CBT), then a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), then document verification and a medical examination. Only the CBT and the CBAT are scored, and both feed into the final merit list.

This page explains each stage: questions, marks, time, negative marking, qualifying rules and how the final merit is worked out. It also covers what the numbers mean for how you split your time. The pattern has three CBT sections and no general awareness, which is different from many other railway exams.

The section split is indicative and may vary. The notification sets one composite time limit for the paper and states no separate sectional timer. Scribe users get 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour.

Minimum qualifying marks in the CBT are 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC (NCL) and SC, and 25% for ST. For PwBD candidates, these may be relaxed by up to 2 marks if reserved posts cannot otherwise be filled. Ex-servicemen follow the standard of their community.

The CBT is available in 15 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. The language you chose while applying cannot be changed. Questions appear in that language and in English.

RRB Section Controller CBAT Pattern

Candidates are shortlisted for the CBAT on CBT merit, in a number equal to eight times the vacancies, RRB-wise and community-wise. The ratio may change as per Railway requirements.

  • Qualifying rule: A T-score of at least 42 in each test battery.

  • No relaxation: The minimum applies to all candidates, including reserved categories and PwBD.

  • No negative marking: Wrong answers do not reduce your CBAT score.

  • Language: English and Hindi only.

  • Vision certificate: Bring the original vision certificate in the prescribed annexure format to the CBAT.

The notification does not name the test batteries. It points candidates to the RDSO website for details of the test and of T-scores.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

Each CBT question carries 1 mark. A wrong answer costs one-third of a mark, and an unattempted question costs nothing. When the CBT runs in more than one session, RRBs use normalised marks for shortlisting.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • One section drives the rank: Analytical and Mathematical Capability carries about 60 marks, so arithmetic and data speed matter most.

  • The cost of a wrong guess: Three wrong answers cancel one right answer. Guess only when you can rule out at least two options.

  • English matters inside reasoning: Reading comprehension sits within Logical Capability, so weak reading can cost marks in a section that looks like reasoning.

  • High cut-offs reward accuracy: In the previous cycle, many RRBs had UR CBT cut-offs above 90 out of 100, so a careless error can cost you a CBAT call.

Document Verification and Medical Examination

After the merit list, candidates equal to the number of vacancies are called for document verification, RRB-wise and as per merit and Railway option. Bring original certificates, because no extra time is given. The medical examination checks the A-2 standard, which includes vision of 6/9, 6/9 for distance and Sn 0.6, 0.6 for near, without glasses. Candidates who have had LASIK or other refractive surgery are not eligible.

Final Merit Calculation

The final merit gives 70% weightage to CBT marks and 30% to CBAT marks, and only candidates who qualify the CBAT are included. If there is a tie, the older candidate is placed higher, followed by alphabetical order of the given name.

As an illustration only: suppose a candidate scores 85 out of 100 in the CBT, which contributes 59.5 at 70% weightage. If the CBAT score works out to 21 out of 30, the combined score is 80.5. RRB result notices refer to a CBAT score out of 30 derived from T-scores, and RDSO explains that method.

Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy

  • Plan about 1.2 minutes per question: 120 minutes for 100 questions leaves little room for long data sets.

  • Use two rounds: Answer quick arithmetic, series and coding questions first, then return to long puzzles and data sets.

  • Do not get stuck on one set: If a data set is not falling into place in 3 to 4 minutes, mark it and move on.

  • Check the e-call letter: Carry the documents it lists and reach the centre before the reporting time.

Older pages may still show a general awareness section or a different question split. Follow the official CEN 03/2026 notification.
