RRB Section Controller Syllabus 2026: Topic-wise Guide

The RRB Section Controller syllabus is set out in the Railway Recruitment Boards' notification CEN No. 03/2026. It covers one Computer Based Test (CBT) with three sections, followed by a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) that has no topic syllabus. The notification lists topics for each CBT section but calls them illustrative, not exhaustive.

This page turns that list into a working checklist. It shows what each section covers, which topics to start with, and how to plan the CBT and CBAT together. It also flags the subjects older pages still show but this notification does not include.

Key Changes to Know

  • No general awareness section: The CEN 03/2026 syllabus has no general knowledge, current affairs or Railways awareness section.

  • Reading comprehension is in: English passages are part of the Logical Capability section, so English reading matters even though there is no separate English paper.

  • Data analysis is broad: It covers multi-source data, including scatter plots, distribution curves and Venn diagrams, not only simple tables.

  • Maths stays basic in places: Probability and statistics are listed at a basic level only.

Older pages may still show general awareness, general science or a reasoning-arithmetic-GK split, so follow the official notification.

RRB Section Controller CBT Syllabus

Section

Topics to cover

Start with

Analytical and Mathematical Capability

Mathematics: number system to basic statistics. Data analysis: multi-source data, data sufficiency, data arrangement

Percentages, ratio and averages, then table and bar-chart sets

Logical Capability

Logical reasoning: binary logic, syllogism, clocks, calendars, assumptions, blood relations, puzzles. Reading comprehension

Syllogism and blood relations, plus one passage a day

Mental Reasoning

Analogy, series completion, coding-decoding, ranking and arrangement

Series and coding-decoding

Analytical and Mathematical Capability carries about 60 of the 100 marks, so it decides most ranks. Inside it, arithmetic skills feed directly into data questions, which means one set of concepts pays off twice.

Analytical and Mathematical Capability

Mathematics

  • Number system, LCM and HCF: Divisibility, remainders and factor-based questions.

  • Ratio and proportion, averages, percentages: The base for most data and word problems.

  • Profit, loss and discounts: Marked price, selling price and successive discounts.

  • Time, speed and distance: Relative speed, trains and boats questions.

  • Power and work: Work done, efficiency and combined work.

  • Algebra and linear equations: Simplification and forming equations from word problems.

  • Arithmetic progression: nth term and sum of terms.

  • Geometry: Area and volume of standard shapes.

  • Probability and statistics: Basic level only, such as mean, median, mode and simple probability.

Data Analysis

Sub-area

What it includes

Multi-source data analysis

Text, tables, charts, graphs, scatter plots, pie charts, distribution curves, Venn diagrams

Data sufficiency

Deciding whether the given statements are enough to answer

Data arrangement

Ordering and organising data to find an answer

Logical Capability

Logical Reasoning

  • Binary logic and syllogism: True-false statements and conclusion-based questions.

  • Clocks and calendars: Angle, day and date calculations.

  • Assumptions: Identifying what a statement takes for granted.

  • Blood relations and family trees: Coded and direct relation questions.

  • Logic puzzles: Seating, scheduling and condition-based puzzles.

Reading Comprehension

Passages are in English and can come from history, society, literature, science, environment, technology, culture and similar areas. Questions test the main idea, supporting ideas, application, logical structure and style of the passage.

Mental Reasoning

  • Analogy: Word, number and letter analogies.

  • Series completion: Number, letter and mixed series.

  • Coding-decoding: Letter, number and symbol codes.

  • Ranking and arrangement: Order, position and ranking questions.

CBAT: Is There a Syllabus?

No. The CBAT is an aptitude test made of test batteries, and the notification does not publish topics for it. The notice refers candidates to the RDSO website for information on the test and on how T-scores work.

What the notification does fix are the rules. You need a T-score of at least 42 in each battery, with no relaxation for any category. There is no negative marking, questions are in English and Hindi only, and the CBAT counts for 30% of the final merit.

How to Cover the RRB Section Controller Syllabus

  1. Weeks 1 to 4, foundations: Arithmetic basics, number system and one data table a day. Start a short daily English reading habit.

  2. Weeks 5 to 8, reasoning and data: Syllogism, puzzles, blood relations and coding-decoding, with harder data sets and data sufficiency.

  3. Weeks 9 to 10, sectional tests: Timed tests for each section, and an error log for every wrong or slow question.

  4. Final phase, full-length mocks: Full mocks with same-day analysis and error-log revision. Read the CBAT guidance once you clear the CBT.

The syllabus above follows the official CEN 03/2026 notification.
