Notification overview
CEN 02/2026 was released as a short notice, followed by the detailed notification on 29 June 2026. Reports put the combined vacancies for Technician Grade 1 Signal and Grade 3 at about 6,557, although an early short notice was reported with a slightly different figure. Always rely on the final notification on the official RRB sites rather than on a headline number.
Two points matter for Grade 1 candidates. First, Grade 1 Signal has its own CBT and its own paper, separate from Grade 3. Second, the qualification is a science or engineering qualification, not the Matriculation plus ITI route used for Grade 3. Some pages mix the two, so read the notification text for your post.

Vacancy details
The Grade 1 Signal vacancy is reported as 323 posts. The category-wise split reported for the cycle is shown below. Treat it as indicative and check it against the notification annexure, because ex-servicemen and PwBD horizontal reservations are counted differently across sources.
Category | Reported vacancies |
|---|---|
UR | 120 |
OBC | 84 |
SC | 50 |
ST | 37 |
EWS | 32 |
Total | 323 |
Posts are distributed across RRBs and zones, with Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata reported to have the highest counts. You apply to one RRB, so the region you choose affects the competition you face.
Eligibility
Educational qualification
Candidates need one of the following: a B.Sc. with Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, Information Technology or Instrumentation (or a combination of these), a three-year Engineering Diploma in a relevant stream, or an Engineering Degree in a relevant stream. The qualification must be complete by the cut-off date in the notification, reported as 29 July 2026.
Age limit
The age limit is 18 to 33 years as on 1 July 2026, which means a date of birth between 2 July 1993 and 1 July 2008. Reserved categories get upper-age relaxation as per government rules. The full details, including a relaxation table, are on the eligibility page.
Other conditions
Candidates must meet the B1 medical standard for the post. Citizenship and character requirements follow the standard railway rules in the notification.
Application fee and refund
Category | Fee | Refund after appearing in CBT |
|---|---|---|
SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities, EBC | Rs. 250 | Rs. 250 (less bank charges) |
All other candidates | Rs. 500 | Rs. 400 (less bank charges) |
The application was online only, through the RRB application portal. Common reasons for rejection are a mismatch between certificates and application details, an unreadable photograph or signature, and applying under a category without a valid certificate.
Exam pattern
Selection for Grade 1 Signal starts with a single-stage CBT. The paper has five sections and a total of 100 marks in 90 minutes.
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
Basic Science and Engineering | 35 | 35 |
Mathematics | 20 | 20 |
Basics of Computers and Applications | 20 | 20 |
General Intelligence and Reasoning | 15 | 15 |
General Awareness | 10 | 10 |
Total | 100 | 100 |
Each correct answer earns one mark, and each wrong answer costs one-third of a mark. Unanswered questions carry no penalty.
What this means for you:
Technical depth decides the result: More than a third of the paper comes from Basic Science and Engineering, so electronics and electrical basics deserve the largest share of your time.
Computers and maths are scoring: Together they carry 40 marks and reward steady practice more than talent.
Guess with care: A wrong answer costs about 0.33 marks, so guess only when you can remove at least one option.
Older Technician pages may show a different pattern, so follow the current notification.
Syllabus summary
Section | Important topics |
|---|---|
Basic Science and Engineering | Units and measurements, work, power and energy, heat, electricity and magnetism, basic and digital electronics, devices and circuits, microprocessors, electronic measurements |
Mathematics | Number system, percentages, ratio, time and work, mensuration, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics |
Computers and Applications | Memory, storage, input-output devices, terminology, security, MS Office |
Reasoning | Analogies, series, coding-decoding, syllogism, Venn diagrams, directions, classification |
General Awareness | Current events, science and technology, sports, culture, economy, politics |
The topic lists are working checklists built from the notification and past papers.
Selection process
Computer-based test: Single stage, 100 marks, scored on normalised marks. Minimum qualifying percentages by category apply (reported as 40, 30, 30 and 25 for UR/EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST; verify in the notification).
Document verification: Candidates in merit order for each RRB are called with original documents.
Medical examination: B1 standard, including vision requirements for a safety-related post.
There is no interview and no skill test, so the CBT score drives the final merit.
Salary and career growth
Technician Grade 1 Signal is placed at Level 5 of the 7th Pay Commission with a basic pay of Rs. 29,200 per month. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and other benefits are added on top. Estimates published by third-party sites put the gross monthly pay at roughly Rs. 51,000 to Rs. 57,000, depending on city, but this is not an official figure and it varies by posting. Railway staff also get medical facilities and travel passes as per rules.
How to prepare
Start with the section that carries the most marks. Revise the electronics and electrical fundamentals first, then build speed in maths and reasoning, and finish with computers and general awareness.
Weeks 1 to 6: Concepts in Basic Science and Engineering, plus basic arithmetic and computer fundamentals.
Weeks 4 to 8: Add reasoning practice and 20 minutes of daily current affairs.
From week 8: Topic-wise tests and sectional practice, followed by full-length mocks in the last phase.
Cut-off reference
The Grade 1 Signal cut-off is not fixed from year to year. In the earlier cycle (CEN 02/2024), one RRB published normalised marks of about 68 for UR, 64 for OBC and EWS, 58 for SC and 48 for ST candidates among those called for document verification. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants, so treat these as a benchmark only. Always check notices on the official RRB website and the RRB application portal for result and document verification updates.
