RRB Technician Grade 1 Signal Syllabus 2026: Topic-Wise List
The RRB Technician Grade 1 Signal syllabus covers five sections in a single computer-based test: Basic Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Basics of Computers and Applications, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Awareness. Basic Science and Engineering carries the highest weight, and it is also the section where Grade 1 differs most from Grade 3.
The Railway Recruitment Boards name these sections in the CEN 02/2026 notification but do not publish a long topic-wise list for each one. The topic lists below are built from the notification and from the kind of questions asked in earlier Technician papers. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list, and compare them with the syllabus on your RRB's website.

Key points to know
One stage only: There is no second-stage paper, so everything on this page is tested in the same CBT.
Technical weight: Basic Science and Engineering alone is 35 percent of the paper.
Grade 3 is different: Technician Grade 3 has its own paper with a general science focus. Do not follow a Grade 3 syllabus for this post.
Level of questions: Maths and reasoning are at a Class 10 level in style, while technical questions follow diploma or B.Sc. fundamentals.
Basic Science and Engineering syllabus
This section tests the electrical and electronics basics a signal technician needs. It is the main scoring area for candidates with an electronics, electrical or physics background, but it also needs careful revision by B.Sc. candidates.
Area | Topics to cover |
|---|---|
Physics fundamentals | Units and measurements, mass, weight, density, work, power, energy, speed, velocity, heat and temperature |
Electricity and magnetism | Electric charge, field and potential, simple circuits, conductors and insulators, Ohm's law, resistances in series and parallel, specific resistance, electrical power, Ampere's law, force on moving charges, electromagnetic induction, Faraday's law, magnetic flux |
Electronics | Basic electronics, digital electronics, electronic devices and circuits, microprocessors and microcontrollers |
Electronic measurements | Measuring principles and systems, range extension, cathode ray oscilloscope, LCD and LED panels, transducers |
High-weight topics
Questions most often come from Ohm's law and circuit calculations, diodes and transistors, logic gates and number systems in digital electronics, and the working of measuring instruments. Start with these, because they build the base for the rest of the section.
Mathematics syllabus
Area | Topics to cover |
|---|---|
Arithmetic | Number system, BODMAS, decimals and fractions, LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, pipes and cisterns, ages |
Algebra and geometry | Algebraic identities, linear equations, basic geometry, mensuration, trigonometry |
Data and others | Elementary statistics, square roots, calendar and clock |
With 20 questions, arithmetic gives the best return. Percentages, ratio and time-based problems appear almost every cycle, so practise them for speed.
Basics of Computers and Applications syllabus
Hardware and memory: RAM, ROM, cache, units of memory, motherboard, processors.
Storage and devices: Hard disks, SSDs, optical media, input and output devices.
Terminology and types: Common computer terms, generations of computers, types of computers.
Software and MS Office: Operating systems, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, shortcuts.
Security and internet: Viruses, malware, firewalls, basic networking and email.
This section is largely factual. A few weeks of regular revision with short quizzes usually covers it.
General Intelligence and Reasoning syllabus
Type | Topics |
|---|---|
Verbal | Analogies, classification, coding and decoding, syllogism, statements and conclusions, statements and assumptions |
Numeric and series | Number and alphabet series, mathematical operations, data sufficiency |
Spatial and arrangement | Directions, Venn diagrams, relationships, jumbling, decision making, analytical reasoning |
General Awareness syllabus
The 10 questions in this section cover current affairs, science and technology, sports, culture, personalities, economy and politics. Focus on the last six to twelve months, especially railway news, science and technology and major government schemes.
Where the sections overlap
Area | Connected sections | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
Units, power, energy | Science and Maths | Learn unit conversions once and use them in both |
Number systems, logic | Digital electronics and Reasoning | Binary and logic practice helps both sections |
Science and technology news | General Awareness and Science | Note new technology stories in one monthly file |
How to cover the syllabus
Plan in four phases of about two to three weeks each, and adjust to your background.
Foundation: Learn electricity and electronics concepts and arithmetic basics.
Build speed: Add reasoning, computers and general awareness, with 20 minutes of daily current affairs.
Topic tests: Attempt topic-wise and sectional tests, and keep an error log.
Full mocks: Take timed full-length tests and revise your error log after each one.
