SSC CHSL Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Relaxation
SSC CHSL eligibility 2026 comes down to three checks: you must have passed Class 12 (or be about to pass it before the cut-off date), be between 18 and 27 years old as on 1 August 2026, and meet the nationality rules. Reserved categories get relaxation in the upper age limit, and a few Data Entry Operator posts need Class 12 in the Science stream with Mathematics.
The Staff Selection Commission released the CHSL 2026 notification on 7 September 2026, and applications close on 7 October 2026. That last date matters twice: it is also the cut-off by which you must hold the essential qualification. This page walks through every SSC CHSL eligibility condition with tables, a date-of-birth calculator by category and the mistakes that most often get forms rejected.

SSC CHSL Educational Qualification
The basic requirement is simple: you must have passed the 12th standard or an equivalent examination from a recognised board or university. There is no minimum percentage. A pass from any stream (Arts, Commerce or Science) is enough for most posts.
Post-Wise Educational Qualification
Post | Essential qualification |
|---|---|
Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) | 12th pass or equivalent from a recognised board or university, any stream |
Data Entry Operator (DEO) / DEO Grade A in Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Staff Selection Commission and Ministry of Culture | 12th pass in the Science stream with Mathematics as a subject, from a recognised board or equivalent |
DEO / DEO Grade A in other ministries and departments | 12th pass or equivalent from a recognised board or university, any stream |
This split is why SSC publishes separate Tier 1 cut-offs for DEO (Science stream) and DEO (other streams) candidates. If you studied Commerce or Arts, you can still apply for DEO posts, but not for DEO vacancies in the three departments listed above. Choose your post preferences with this in mind.
Can Class 12 Appearing Candidates Apply?
Yes. Candidates who have appeared in the 12th standard or equivalent exam can apply, but they must actually hold the qualification on or before 7 October 2026. In practice, this works for students whose results are already out or will be declared before that date, such as those who took a supplementary or compartment exam. If your result comes after 7 October 2026, you are not eligible for this cycle.
Keep proof of the result date: At document verification, SSC checks that your result was declared by the cut-off date. A marksheet or board notice showing the result date settles any doubt.
Equivalent qualifications: Qualifications from boards recognised as equivalent to Class 12 by the central or state government are accepted. If yours is unusual (for example, a diploma claimed as equivalent), keep the official equivalence order ready.
SSC CHSL Age Limit 2026
The SSC CHSL age limit is 18 to 27 years, calculated as on 1 August 2026. For an unreserved candidate, this means you must have been born not before 2 August 1999 and not later than 1 August 2008, with both dates included. SSC takes the date of birth recorded in your Matriculation or Secondary certificate, and does not accept a later change to it.
Date of Birth Window by Category
The table below applies each category's relaxation to the base window. The latest date of birth stays 1 August 2008 for everyone, because the minimum age of 18 is not relaxed.
Category | Maximum age | Born on or after | Born on or before |
|---|---|---|---|
UR / EWS | 27 years | 2 August 1999 | 1 August 2008 |
OBC (non-creamy layer) | 30 years | 2 August 1996 | 1 August 2008 |
SC / ST | 32 years | 2 August 1994 | 1 August 2008 |
PwBD (UR / EWS) | 37 years | 2 August 1989 | 1 August 2008 |
PwBD (OBC) | 40 years | 2 August 1986 | 1 August 2008 |
PwBD (SC / ST) | 42 years | 2 August 1984 | 1 August 2008 |
These dates are calculated from the notification's base window and relaxation rules. Always confirm against the official notice before applying.

Category | Upper age relaxation |
|---|---|

OBC (non-creamy layer) | 3 years |

PwBD (SC / ST) | 15 years |
Ex-Servicemen (ESM) | 3 years after deducting military service rendered from actual age on the crucial date |
Defence personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with a foreign country or in a disturbed area, and released as a result | 3 years |
Defence personnel disabled in operations (SC / ST) | 8 years |
Central Government civilian employees with at least 3 years of regular and continuous service on the closing date | Up to 40 years of age |
Central Government civilian employees (SC / ST) with at least 3 years of service | Up to 45 years of age |

Widows, divorced women and judicially separated women, not remarried (SC / ST) | Up to 40 years of age |
Relaxations from different categories are not added together beyond what the notice allows. You claim one category for relaxation and must hold the matching certificate in the format the notice prescribes.
Age Eligibility Examples
Born 15 June 1999, UR: Not eligible. The UR window starts on 2 August 1999, so this candidate is over 27 on 1 August 2026.
Born 15 June 1999, OBC (non-creamy layer): Eligible. The OBC window starts on 2 August 1996.
Born 10 September 2008, any category: Not eligible. This candidate will be under 18 on 1 August 2026, and the minimum age is never relaxed.
Born 1 August 2008, any category: Eligible. Both ends of the window are included.
SSC CHSL Nationality Criteria
To apply, you must be one of the following:
A citizen of India: This covers almost all applicants.
A subject of Nepal or Bhutan: Eligible under the notice's nationality rules.
Other categories in the notice: Persons of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, and certain East African countries and other nations listed in the notification with the intention of permanently settling in India, subject to the conditions given there.
Candidates in the non-citizen categories need a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India. You may be allowed to take the exam while the certificate is pending, but an appointment can be offered only after it is issued.
Post-Specific Conditions
LDC in Border Roads Organisation (BRO)
If vacancies are reported for LDC in the Border Roads Organisation, only male candidates are eligible for them. These posts also have physical standards, physical efficiency tests and medical standards, which are set out in Annexure XVI of the notification. Read that annexure before giving BRO as a preference, because failing the physical or medical standard ends your candidature for that post.
Eligibility for PwBD Candidates
The notification lists which benchmark disabilities are suitable for each post, based on the functions the job involves.
Post | Suitable categories of benchmark disability (summary) |
|---|---|
DEO / DEO Grade A | Low vision; deaf and hard of hearing; locomotor disabilities including one arm, one leg, both legs, cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy (as specified); autism spectrum disorder (mild), intellectual disability, specific learning disability and mental illness; multiple disabilities from these groups |
LDC / JSA | Blindness and low vision; deaf and hard of hearing; the same locomotor disabilities as above; autism spectrum disorder (mild and moderate), intellectual disability, specific learning disability and mental illness; multiple disabilities from these groups |
The key difference is that blindness is listed as suitable for LDC/JSA posts but not for DEO posts, while low vision is listed for both. The exact sub-categories and functional requirements are in the notice, so check your specific condition there. Eligible PwBD candidates also get scribe facilities and compensatory time.
Who Is Not Eligible for SSC CHSL 2026
Class 12 result after 7 October 2026: Appearing candidates whose result is declared after the cut-off date cannot be considered.
Outside the age window: Anyone born before the start date for their category or after 1 August 2008.
Commerce or Arts students opting for DEO posts in the three listed departments: These vacancies need Science with Mathematics.
Female candidates for BRO vacancies: The notice limits BRO posts to male candidates. Other posts are open to all.
Category claims without valid certificates: An OBC, EWS, SC, ST, PwBD or ESM claim not backed by a certificate in the prescribed format at document verification leads to cancellation of that claim, and often of candidature.
Candidates debarred by SSC: Anyone currently under debarment for malpractice cannot apply until the debarment period ends.
Number of Attempts for SSC CHSL
The notification does not set a maximum number of attempts. You can appear in SSC CHSL every year as long as you meet the age limit for your category. A UR candidate who first applies at 18 could, in principle, attempt the exam up to the year they turn 27. Within a single cycle, however, appearing more than once is treated as malpractice and can lead to debarment, so submit only one application.

Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply
Check your date of birth: Compare your Class 10 certificate date with the window for your category in the table above.
Confirm your Class 12 status: Your result must be declared on or before 7 October 2026.
Match your stream with your post choices: If you did not take Science with Mathematics, do not plan on DEO posts in the three listed departments.
Keep category certificates ready and current: Make sure they are in the format the notice asks for, especially OBC non-creamy layer and EWS certificates.
Read the official notice once in full: Download it from the official SSC website, as the notice is the final authority on eligibility.
SSC CHSL eligibility is one of the broadest among central government exams: a Class 12 pass, an age between 18 and 27 with relaxations, and Indian nationality. Check the cut-off dates carefully, choose posts that match your stream, and keep your documents in order from the start.
