SSC GD Syllabus 2027: Subject-Wise Topics and Weightage
The SSC GD syllabus is short on paper but wide in practice. The Staff Selection Commission describes each subject in just a few lines, which leaves many aspirants unsure about what to study and how deeply. That confusion costs time, especially when the Computer Based Examination (CBE) is only a few months away.
This guide turns the official SSC GD Constable syllabus into a clear, topic-wise study list for 2027. You will find what each section tests, which topics deserve the most attention, how to choose between English and Hindi, and a 12-week plan to finish the syllabus with time left for mock tests. The syllabus has stayed stable across recent cycles, but confirm it once the 2027 notification is released on ssc.gov.in.
SSC GD Syllabus at a Glance
The CBE has four sections of equal weight. Questions are set at matriculation (Class 10) level.
Section | Questions | Marks | What It Tests |
|---|---|---|---|
General Intelligence and Reasoning | 20 | 40 | Logic, pattern recognition and visual reasoning |
General Knowledge and General Awareness | 20 | 40 | Current events, static GK and awareness of society |
Elementary Mathematics | 20 | 40 | Arithmetic and basic calculation skills |
English / Hindi | 20 | 40 | Basic comprehension and grammar in one language |
Total | 80 | 160 | 60 minutes; 0.25 negative marking per wrong answer |
General Intelligence and Reasoning Syllabus
The official syllabus says this section tests analytical aptitude and the ability to observe and distinguish patterns. In practice, questions are a mix of verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
Topic Group | Topics Included | Priority |
|---|---|---|
Series | Number series, alphabet series, non-verbal (figure) series | High |
Analogy and classification | Word, number and figure analogies; odd one out | High |
Coding-decoding | Letter coding, number coding, symbol-based coding | High |
Non-verbal reasoning | Mirror and water images, paper folding and cutting, embedded figures, figure completion | High |
Relationship concepts | Blood relations, direction sense, ranking and order | Medium |
Arithmetical reasoning | Mathematical operations, missing numbers | Medium |
Spatial and visual | Spatial orientation, visual memory, counting figures | Medium |
Logical arrangement | Simple seating arrangement, syllogism, Venn diagrams | Low to Medium |
How to prepare: Reasoning is the fastest section to improve with practice. Solve 20 to 30 mixed questions daily and time yourself. For non-verbal questions, practise visually rather than reading solutions, because speed comes from recognising patterns.
General Knowledge and General Awareness Syllabus
SSC defines this section as awareness of the environment around you and its application to society. Questions focus on India and its neighbouring countries, covering sports, history, culture, geography, the economy, general polity, the Indian Constitution and scientific research, along with current events.
Area | Key Topics |
|---|---|
Current affairs | National and international events, awards, appointments, schemes, summits |
Polity | Constitution basics, Fundamental Rights and Duties, Parliament, President, important Articles |
History | Ancient, medieval and modern India; freedom struggle; important personalities |
Geography | Physical and Indian geography, rivers, national parks, neighbouring countries |
Economy | Basic economic terms, budget, banking, government schemes |
Art and culture | Dances, festivals, monuments, music and musicians |
Sports | Tournaments, trophies, venues, players in the news |
General science | Everyday physics, chemistry and biology at Class 10 level |
Static GK | Books and authors, important days, first in India, capitals and currencies |
How to prepare: Use NCERT textbooks from Class 6 to 10 for history, geography, polity and science. For current affairs, keep a monthly revision routine instead of reading news only once. Polity, economy and sports have been regular areas in recent papers, so give them steady attention.
Elementary Mathematics Syllabus
The official list covers the number system, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, relationships between numbers, fundamental arithmetic operations, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, mensuration, time and distance, and time and work.
Topic Group | Topics Included | Priority |
|---|---|---|
Percentage-based | Percentage, profit and loss, discount | High |
Speed and work | Time and distance, time and work | High |
Ratio-based | Ratio and proportion, partnership, mixture and ages | Medium |
Averages and interest | Average, simple interest, compound interest | Medium |
Number system | Divisibility, HCF and LCM, fractions, decimals, simplification | Medium |
Mensuration | Area and perimeter of 2D figures; volume and surface area of basic 3D shapes | Medium |
How to prepare: Percentage is the base for profit and loss, discount and interest, so master it first. Learn tables up to 20, squares up to 30 and common fraction-percentage conversions. These save seconds on almost every question.
English Syllabus
The official line is brief: the section tests your ability to understand basic English and your basic comprehension. Recent papers draw heavily on vocabulary and simple grammar.
Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, idioms and phrases, spelling correction.
Grammar: Error spotting, sentence improvement, fill in the blanks (articles, prepositions, tenses, subject-verb agreement).
Comprehension: Cloze test and short reading passages.
How to prepare: Learn 10 to 15 new words a day with example sentences, and revise them weekly. Study grammar rules through questions, not theory alone.
Hindi Syllabus
Candidates who choose Hindi face the same four-section paper, with the language section in Hindi. The commonly tested areas are:
Shabd gyan (vocabulary): Paryayvachi (synonyms), vilom (antonyms), anekarthak shabd, shabd-yugm, and vakyansh ke liye ek shabd (one-word substitution).
Vyakaran (grammar): Sandhi and sandhi-viched, samas, upsarg and pratyay, sangya, sarvanaam, visheshan and kriya.
Vakya shuddhi: Correcting errors in words and sentences, and vartani (spelling).
Muhavare and lokoktiyan: Idioms and proverbs with their meanings.
Gadyansh: Reading comprehension passages.
English or Hindi
You attempt only one language section, so choose the one in which you can score more, not the one that sounds more impressive. If you studied in a Hindi-medium school and read Hindi comfortably, Hindi grammar and vocabulary may be easier to score in. If you are more comfortable reading English, choose English. Try one sectional test in each before deciding, and then stick with your choice.
Topic Priority Map for Smart Preparation
SSC does not publish topic-wise weightage. The priorities below are based on the pattern of recent papers and should guide how you split your time, not replace full syllabus coverage.
Section | Start With | Then Cover | Revise Regularly |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | Series, analogy, coding-decoding | Non-verbal, blood relations, directions | Mixed timed sets |
GK / GA | Current affairs, polity | History, geography, economy | Static GK and sports |
Maths | Percentage, profit and loss | Time-distance, time-work, ratio | Mensuration, number system |
English | Vocabulary | Error spotting, fill in the blanks | Cloze test |
12-Week Plan to Complete the SSC GD Syllabus
Weeks | Reasoning and Maths | GK and Language |
|---|---|---|
1 to 3 | Series, analogy, coding; percentage, profit and loss, number system | Polity basics; daily vocabulary; grammar basics |
4 to 6 | Non-verbal reasoning, blood relations; ratio, averages, interest | History and geography; error spotting |
7 to 9 | Directions, arithmetic reasoning; time-distance, time-work, mensuration | Economy, science, art and culture; cloze test |

Add daily running practice alongside this plan. The PET (5 km in 24 minutes for men, 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes for women, with different standards for the Ladakh region) is qualifying, but failing it ends your candidature.
Reading a topic is not the same as scoring in it. Once you finish a topic, test yourself with topic-wise questions, and move to full-length SSC GD mock tests in the final weeks. Testkart's online tests help you check accuracy and speed section by section, so you know which part of the syllabus needs another round of revision.
