TCS NQT Exam: Pattern, Syllabus & Eligibility

TCS NQT is the TCS iON hiring test for freshers. See variants, pattern, syllabus, eligibility and score validity, then practise with Testkart online tests.

TCS NQT Study Material

The TCS NQT (TCS National Qualifier Test) is a hiring and employability test run by Tata Consultancy Services through its TCS iON platform. Unlike a government recruitment exam, it does not lead to a fixed number of posts. It produces a scorecard that you can use to apply for entry-level jobs with TCS and with other companies that accept the score. If you are a final-year student or a recent graduate planning a campus or off-campus placement, understanding the TCS NQT early gives you months of useful preparation time.

This page is the starting point for the Testkart TCS NQT cluster. It explains what the test is, how it is structured, who can take it, how scores are used, and how to prepare. Details that TCS publishes on its official pages are marked as such. Details that only appear on third-party sites, or that change from one cycle to the next, are labelled as reported or tentative so that you know what to verify before you register.

What is the TCS NQT?

The TCS NQT is a national-level aptitude and skills assessment for freshers. TCS describes it on the TCS iON hub as a way for candidates to show their skills to employers. The same scorecard is shared with the companies you choose to apply to, so one good attempt can serve several applications.

The test is not a government exam, and it is not a one-time event with a single result date. Test sessions are scheduled at regular intervals, and you can attempt it more than once. Because TCS decides its own hiring criteria, there is no public notification with vacancies, a fixed age cut-off for every cycle or an official rank list.

Test variants

The TCS iON hub lists more than one version of the NQT. Pick the one that matches the roles you are targeting, because each version tests a different mix of skills.

Variant

What it assesses

Suits

Cognitive

Verbal ability, reasoning ability and numerical ability

Candidates from any stream

IT

Advanced coding, basic and advanced aptitude, and a psychometric assessment

Engineering, computer science and IT candidates

Non Tech

General quantitative, verbal and mental ability

Commerce, arts and science candidates targeting non-technical roles

BFSI

Financial markets and services knowledge, basic aptitude and a psychometric assessment

Candidates targeting banking, finance and insurance roles

The exact names, contents and prices of variants can change, so confirm the current list on the official hub before you pay for any attempt.

Exam pattern in brief

The TCS iON hub confirms the section areas but, on the page we checked, does not state the number of questions or the duration. Prep sources report a two-part structure for recent TCS hiring cycles. Treat the figures below as reported, not official.

Part

Sections

Reported size

Foundation

Numerical, verbal and reasoning ability

About 65 questions in roughly 75 minutes

Advanced

Advanced quantitative and reasoning, and advanced coding

A small set of aptitude questions plus 2 coding problems, in roughly 115 minutes

Different sources quote slightly different question counts, so rely on the instructions shown in your hall ticket and on the exam-day screen.

What this means for you

  • No negative marking: Attempt every question, because a wrong answer does not cost marks.

  • Sections are timed: Practise finishing each section within its own time, not just the whole paper.

  • Coding carries weight for technical roles: If you are aiming for IT roles, coding practice cannot be left for the last week.

Syllabus summary

TCS publishes section names and broad topic areas, not a numbered syllabus. The table below is built from those official areas and is a working checklist.

Section

Topics to cover

Start with

Verbal ability

Grammar, usage, sentence completion, reading comprehension

Grammar rules and short passages

Reasoning ability

Word and number patterns, series, arrangements, decision making, propositional and visual-spatial reasoning

Series and arrangements

Numerical ability

Number system, arithmetic, elementary statistics, data interpretation

Percentages, ratios and number system

Coding (IT variant)

Programming logic, arrays, strings, basic data structures

One language you are comfortable in

Eligibility in brief

The official hub lists pre-final and final-year UG, PG and diploma students in any stream, graduates passing out between 2021 and 2027, and freshers or working professionals with less than 2 years of experience. It also lists an age range of 17 to 30 years.

Companies hiring through NQT, including TCS, add their own conditions such as minimum marks and backlog rules. These differ by employer and by hiring drive and are not part of the test itself.

How the TCS NQT leads to a job

Passing the test does not hand you a job. TCS iON states that it does not arrange interviews, and that your score is shared only with the companies you apply to. After the test, the typical path is:

  1. Apply to companies: Use your scorecard to apply to listed employers, including TCS where a hiring drive is open.

  2. Meet the employer's criteria: Each company checks academics, backlogs and other conditions of its own.

  3. Interviews: Shortlisted candidates go through the employer's technical and HR rounds.

For TCS entry-level roles, candidates commonly talk about the Ninja, Digital and Prime categories. These are reported hiring tracks that depend on how you score and how you perform in interviews. TCS decides the tagging, and no public score band is published for them.

Dates, fees and registration

TCS iON states that tests run every 2 to 4 weeks in its exam centres, and that the hall ticket is emailed 2 days before the test. The page we checked does not list a price or a specific date, so we are not quoting any here. Fees and slots change by variant and over time.

  • Registration: Create an account on the official hub, choose a variant, pay or activate your code and book a slot.

  • Dates: Choose from the slots shown on the hub. Treat any date quoted elsewhere as tentative until you see it there.

  • Refunds: The hub states that there is no refund or retest if you miss the test or cannot complete it for reasons attributable to you.

Score validity and attempts

Your TCS iON NQT score is valid for 2 years from the date the result is published. You may attempt the test more than once, and the highest score is considered. The same variant can be bought again only after 90 days, per the hub. This is useful if your first attempt was not your best, but it also means you should not rush into the first available slot without preparing.

Cut-off and score bands

TCS does not publish a single fixed cut-off for the NQT. Employers set their own shortlisting bars, and these can change between hiring drives. Any cut-off figure you see online is an estimate.

How to prepare for the TCS NQT

The test rewards steady practice more than last-minute cramming. A simple plan works for most students.

  1. Weeks 1 to 3, fundamentals: Revise arithmetic, number system and reasoning basics. Read English passages daily for 20 minutes.

  2. Weeks 4 to 6, topic practice: Solve timed sets for each section. Keep an error log of every mistake and its reason.

  3. Weeks 7 and 8, coding: If you are taking the IT variant, solve two or three coding problems a day in one language.

  4. Final two weeks, full tests: Attempt full-length timed tests, analyse them the same day and revisit the error log.

Practising with mock tests

Mock tests teach pacing, which is the biggest scoring factor in a timed aptitude test. The official hub offers a free practice test and a sample test, and you can complement them with timed tests on Testkart. For section-wise practice and analysis.

Where to check official information

Always confirm the latest variants, slots, prices and rules on the official TCS iON National Qualifier Test hub at tcsion.com. Companies that hire through NQT publish their own eligibility and process on their own careers pages, and those take priority over any summary on a third-party site, including this one.
