TCS NQT Eligibility: Who Can Apply and Hiring Criteria

TCS NQT eligibility has two layers, and most students mix them up. The first layer decides who can register for and take the TCS National Qualifier Test on TCS iON. The second layer is the set of academic and other conditions that a hiring company, including Tata Consultancy Services, applies before it shortlists you using your score. Knowing the difference saves you from paying for a test you cannot use, or from assuming you are ineligible when you are not.

This page explains both layers, what TCS iON officially states, and which commonly quoted conditions need to be verified for your hiring drive. Read it with the TCS NQT overview for the bigger picture.

Who can take the test

The test is designed for early-career candidates who want to apply for entry-level roles. You can take it if you fall into one of these groups.

  • Pre-final year students: Students in the second-to-last year of a UG, PG or diploma course can take the test and use the score later.

  • Final-year students: Students preparing for campus or off-campus placements.

  • Recent graduates: Candidates passing out within the years listed on the hub who are looking for a job.

  • Early professionals: Candidates with less than 2 years of work experience.

The hub says students from any degree or specialisation can take the test, so a B.Com, B.A., B.Sc or BBA candidate is not shut out just because the company is an IT services firm. The variant you choose, and the role you later apply for, are what decide how relevant your background is.

Educational qualification

For taking the NQT itself, the hub does not list a minimum percentage or CGPA. It focuses on your course level and year. This is why the same score can be sent to many employers, each with different academic standards.

Passing-out year

The hub lists students passing between 2021 and 2027. If your year of passing falls outside this range, check the hub for an updated range before paying. Hiring companies may also restrict applications to a specific batch, such as only the current graduating year. This is a company rule and varies between drives.

Age limit

The hub lists an age range of 17 to 30 years. Because the range can be revised, check the date and rule on the hub. Employers can also set their own age conditions for a hiring drive, which may be tighter than the test's range. Relaxation tables by category, as used in government exams, do not apply to the NQT.

Work experience

Candidates with less than 2 years of work experience can take the test. This lets early professionals who want to change jobs reuse a valid score. If you have more experience, this test is probably not the right route, and you should look at lateral hiring pages of the company instead.

Employer-level criteria for hiring

Passing the test does not make you eligible for a particular company's job. Each employer, including TCS, applies its own conditions to the candidates who apply with an NQT score. TCS iON states that it does not arrange interviews and shares your score only with the companies you apply to.

Prep sites commonly quote conditions for TCS entry-level hiring drives such as minimum marks or CGPA in class 10, class 12 and degree, limits on backlogs, limits on education gaps, and full-time course requirements. These figures are not published on the TCS iON test hub, they differ between sources, and they change between drives. We are therefore not presenting them as fixed rules.

Who may not be eligible

  • Candidates outside the listed passing-out years: Check the hub for the current range.

  • Candidates with more than 2 years of experience: The hub lists less than 2 years.

  • Candidates who miss an employer's criteria: You can take the test and still be ineligible for a specific drive.

  • Candidates who retake too soon: The same variant can be bought again only after 90 days.

Documents and identity

The hall ticket is emailed 2 days before the test. Carry the photo identity proof that the hall ticket mentions. For a company drive, you will usually need your academic mark sheets and degree details, so keep scans ready. Names and dates on documents should match what you entered while registering.

How to check your own eligibility

  1. Step 1: Open the official TCS iON National Qualifier Test hub and compare your course level and passing-out year with the listed conditions.

  2. Step 2: Choose the variant that suits the roles you want.

  3. Step 3: Before applying to a company, read its eligibility notice for academics, backlogs and branches.

  4. Step 4: Start preparing with the TCS NQT exam pattern and TCS NQT syllabus, and practise with TCS NQT mock tests on Testkart.
