UP Junior High School Teacher Exam Pattern 2026: Marks and Format

The UP Junior High School Teacher exam pattern decides how you should split your time and how careful you must be with guesses. The last written exam, held on 17 October 2021, was an objective paper with no negative marking. Reports now suggest that the next cycle, which may be run by the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), could use a different format with a penalty for wrong answers.

This page sets out both formats side by side, explains what each means for your strategy, and keeps the confirmed and unconfirmed information clearly separate.

Key changes to know

  • Marking may change: The biggest reported change is the introduction of negative marking.

  • Selection basis: Reports say merit could rest only on the written paper.

Older pages may still show the 2021 pattern as current, so follow the official notification once it is released on the UPESSC website or the Basic Education Department website.

Both parts were attempted in a single sitting, so the time split between them was left to the candidate. The qualifying level reported for that exam was 65 percent for unreserved and 60 percent for reserved candidates, which is indicative and explained on the cut-off page.

Reported pattern for the next cycle

News reports dated October 2026 describe a paper of 120 questions carrying 3 marks each, with one mark deducted for every wrong answer. A similar format has been used in the UPESSC advertisement for primary assistant teachers, which is a separate recruitment for classes 1 to 5. For the junior high school posts, the structure of the paper, the split between general knowledge and subject, and the duration are not confirmed.

Until an official advertisement appears, treat these figures as tentative and prepare in a way that works under both formats.

Marking scheme and negative marking

In 2021 every correct answer earned 1 mark and nothing was deducted for a wrong or blank answer. If the reported format is confirmed, the scheme works like this.

Marks (reported format)

+3

-1

Unattempted

Worked example: if you attempt 100 questions, get 80 right and 20 wrong, you score 240 minus 20, which is 220 out of 360. Whether blank answers are penalised will be known only from the notification.

What the pattern means for you

  • Subject depth wins: In the 2021 format, the subject paper carried two-thirds of the marks. Spend most of your study time there.

  • Guess only with a reason: Under the reported scheme, a guess is worth it only if you are more than 25 percent likely to be right, for example after removing two options.

  • General knowledge decides ties: Uttar Pradesh facts and current affairs are less predictable, so they often make the difference between close scores.

  • Accuracy over volume: A paper with fewer attempts and high accuracy is safer than a high-attempt, low-accuracy paper.

Headmaster paper

Secondary reports mention an extra education management and administration part for Headmaster candidates in the 2021 cycle, but the exact marks and timing could not be verified. If you are applying for the Headmaster post, read that portion of the notification closely and treat the figures here as tentative.

Final merit and selection

In the selection stage held in late 2025, merit was prepared from the 2021 written marks, followed by online school allocation, document verification and appointment. No interview was held at that stage. If the next cycle uses only the written paper, your paper score will be the whole story, so each mark matters.

Time management

With 150 questions in 150 minutes in the 2021 format, the average is one minute per question. A workable split is about 35 to 40 minutes for general knowledge, about 90 minutes for the subject paper and the rest for review. For a 120-question paper, practise the same discipline: finish a first pass quickly, mark doubtful questions and return to them only if time remains.
