UP Police Computer Operator Exam Pattern 2026: Marks, Stages and Typing Test
The UP Police Computer Operator exam pattern is built around one objective written paper of 160 questions and 200 marks, followed by a qualifying typing test, document verification and medical and character checks. The paper is set by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) for Computer Operator Grade-A posts.
Knowing the pattern well saves time on exam day. This page explains each stage, the marks in every section, what is confirmed and what is not, and how to turn the numbers into a time plan. As of 19 October 2026, the written exam is reported as proposed for October or November 2026, with no confirmed date visible on the official website.

Key Points to Know
Single paper, three sections: General Knowledge, Mental Ability and Reasoning, and Computer Science are all in one OMR booklet.
Computer Science is half the paper: It has 80 of 160 questions.
Typing is qualifying: You need to clear the speed and accuracy standard, but it does not add marks to the merit as reported.
Minimum qualifying marks: A minimum of 40 percent in the written exam is reported. Confirm the figure and any category-wise relaxation in the notification.
Date status: The exam date is tentative until the board publishes a notice and admit card.
Written Exam Pattern
Section | Questions | Marks | Marks per question |
|---|---|---|---|
General Knowledge | 40 | 50 | 1.25 |
Mental Ability and Reasoning | 40 | 50 | 1.25 |
Computer Science | 80 | 100 | 1.25 |
Total | 160 | 200 | 1.25 |
The paper is objective with four options per question, marked on an OMR sheet. The duration is 2 hours for all sections together. The board does not, as reported, set separate time limits per section, so you decide how long to spend on each.
Language of the paper
Questions in a state police recruitment paper are usually set in Hindi and English. The notification and the admit card will confirm the medium for this paper. Computer terms are often given in English even in the Hindi version, so learn the English terms along with the Hindi ones.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Each correct answer earns 1.25 marks. This gives a clean conversion: 160 questions at 1.25 marks each make 200 marks, and every 4 correct answers add 5 marks.
We could not confirm from an official source whether wrong answers carry a deduction, and the pages we reviewed do not agree on it. Until the board's notice clarifies it, prepare as if a penalty could exist. That means avoiding blind guesses, and guessing only when you can remove at least one or two options. Check the instructions printed on your admit card and the OMR sheet before you start.
Correct answers | Marks before any deduction |
|---|---|
80 | 100 |
100 | 125 |
120 | 150 |
140 | 175 |
This table only shows the arithmetic of 1.25 marks per correct answer. It is not a prediction of the cut-off. If a deduction applies, your final score will be lower by the amount the board specifies for wrong answers.
What the Pattern Means for You
Computer Science decides the rank: 100 marks come from 80 questions, mostly direct and recall based. A strong score here lifts you above candidates who are only strong in reasoning.
Time per question is short: 120 minutes for 160 questions is 45 seconds per question. Fast, certain answers in Computer Science and General Knowledge create time for slower reasoning questions.
A weak section is risky: If the board applies a sectional minimum, a very low score in any one section can hurt. Even if it does not, a balanced attempt is safer than depending on one section.
Every question is worth the same: A one-line recall question in Computer Science gives the same 1.25 marks as a long reasoning puzzle. Answer the quick ones first.
Where to put your effort
Section | Suggested share of study time | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Computer Science | About 50 percent | Half the marks and many direct questions |
General Knowledge | About 25 percent | Large syllabus but steady scoring with revision |
Mental Ability and Reasoning | About 25 percent | Skill-based, improves with daily practice |
The split is a planning suggestion, not a board rule. Move time toward whichever section your mock tests show as weakest.
Typing Test Pattern
The typing test is the second stage and is qualifying in nature. Candidates who clear the written exam are called for it. The reported standard is:
Language | Minimum speed | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
Hindi | 25 words per minute | 85 percent |
English | 30 words per minute | 85 percent |
Hindi typing follows the Unicode Inscript layout prescribed by the board. This is not the same as the Remington layout that many older typists know, so if you learned typing on another layout, switch early.
How to prepare for the typing test
Practise daily: Fifteen to twenty minutes of Hindi Inscript and the same of English works better than one long weekly session.
Focus on accuracy first: The 85 percent accuracy rule means that fast but messy typing can fail the stage.
Use timed passages: Practise with 5 to 10 minute passages and check both speed and error count.
Learn the rules: Read the notice for how words, spaces and mistakes are counted.
Document Verification and Medical Stage
Document verification checks your original certificates against the details in your application: date of birth, educational qualification, category and domicile where claimed. Mismatches in name, date of birth or category are the most common problems, so check your documents now, not after the result.
The medical examination and character verification follow, and they are conditions for appointment. The board's notice will give the medical standards and the documents needed.
How the Final Merit Works
As reported, the final merit list is based on written exam marks. If the exam is held in more than one shift, the board may normalise marks across shifts so that candidates are compared fairly. The typing test, document verification and medical stage decide who stays in the list, but they do not add to the written score as reported.
A simple example
Suppose two candidates both clear the typing test and document verification. One has 140 correct answers and the other has 138. Their written scores differ by 2.5 marks, and that gap alone decides which of them is ahead, subject to category rules and any tie-breaking rule in the notification. This is why every single question matters in the written paper, and why the margin between selection and rejection can be small.
Time Management in the Exam Hall
Plan a first pass of 75 to 80 minutes: Start with Computer Science, since it is the largest and quickest section. Aim for about 35 minutes for its 80 questions on the first pass.
Move to General Knowledge: Give it about 20 minutes and skip anything you cannot place within 20 seconds.
Do Reasoning next: Spend about 25 minutes and leave the longest puzzles for the second pass.
Use the last 30 to 35 minutes for the second pass: Return to skipped questions, starting with those where you can eliminate options.
Keep five minutes for the OMR sheet: Check that every answer you chose is filled in the right row.
Older Pages and Official Source
Older pages and summaries may still show details from the earlier Computer Operator recruitment or from other UP Police posts, such as constable or sub-inspector papers. Those posts have a different pattern, so follow the Computer Operator Grade-A notification. The board's notices and exam updates are on uppbpb.gov.in.
