UP Police Constable Eligibility 2026: Age Limit and Height
UP Police Constable eligibility covers five things: nationality, a Class 12 pass, an age limit counted on a fixed date, physical standards, and medical and character fitness. The rules come from the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) notification for Constable Civil Police and Equivalent Posts Direct Recruitment 2025, which offered 32,679 posts across civil police, PAC, special security force, mounted police, the women battalion and jail warder cadres.
Age needs the most care. For this recruitment, age was counted as on 1 July 2025, and the state government later allowed a one-time relaxation of three years in the upper age limit for every category. This page sets out each condition with exact limits, date-of-birth windows, worked examples and the mistakes that get applications rejected.

Nationality
To apply for the post of UP Police Constable, a candidate must be one of the following:
Indian citizen: The standard route for almost every applicant.
Tibetan refugee: A person who came to India before 1 January 1962 to settle permanently.
Person of Indian origin: Someone who migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka or the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda or Tanzania to settle permanently in India.
Candidates in the second and third groups need an eligibility certificate from the state government. A Tibetan refugee must also obtain one from the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Intelligence, Uttar Pradesh. For persons of Indian origin, the certificate is issued for one year at most, and they can continue in service beyond that only if they acquire Indian citizenship.
Educational Qualification
The minimum qualification is a pass in Class 12 (Intermediate) from a board established by law in India, or a qualification the government recognises as equivalent. No minimum percentage and no particular stream is required, so Arts, Science, Commerce and vocational students are all eligible.
Hold the result when you apply: You must have passed Class 12 on the date you submit the form, and the marksheet or certificate must be with you. Candidates who have appeared, or are going to appear, in the Class 12 exam are not eligible.
Proof is your responsibility: If your board or qualification is unusual, you must produce documents showing that it is genuine and equivalent. The Board's decision on equivalence is final.
Higher degrees are fine: Graduates and postgraduates can apply, but a higher degree earns no extra marks or preference.
UP Police Constable Age Limit
Basic age limit as on 1 July 2025
The notification counts age on 1 July 2025. Before any relaxation, the limits and date-of-birth windows were:
Candidate | Age limit | Born not before | Born not after |
|---|---|---|---|
Men (Unreserved / EWS) | 18 to 22 years | 2 July 2003 | 1 July 2007 |
Women (Unreserved / EWS) | 18 to 25 years | 2 July 2000 | 1 July 2007 |
Category-wise age relaxation
Category | Upper age relaxation |
|---|---|
OBC, SC and ST (domiciled in Uttar Pradesh only) | 5 years |
Uttar Pradesh state government employees | 5 years |
Ex-servicemen of Uttar Pradesh | Age minus military service must not exceed the upper limit by more than 3 years |
OBC, SC and ST candidates from other states do not get this relaxation. They can still apply, but under the unreserved age limits.
One-time 3-year relaxation for all categories
In January 2026, while applications were open, the Uttar Pradesh government allowed a one-time relaxation of three years in the maximum age for all categories in this recruitment. It applies to every post covered by the notification, including civil police, PAC, special security force, mounted police, the women battalion and jail warder. The effective upper limits became:
Category | Men: maximum age | Women: maximum age |
|---|---|---|
Unreserved and EWS | 25 years | 28 years |
OBC, SC and ST (UP domicile) | 30 years (5 + 3) | 33 years (5 + 3) |
Counting back from 1 July 2025, the date-of-birth windows after the one-time relaxation work out as follows. The minimum age of 18 years means every candidate must have been born on or before 1 July 2007.
Category | Men: born on or after | Women: born on or after |
|---|---|---|
Unreserved and EWS | 2 July 2000 | 2 July 1997 |
OBC, SC and ST (UP domicile) | 2 July 1995 | 2 July 1992 |
These windows are calculated from the official limits and the relaxation order. Before applying in any cycle, check the dates against the Board's notice, because the one-time relaxation was granted for this recruitment only and may not be repeated.
Worked examples
Eligible: An OBC woman from Uttar Pradesh born on 15 March 1993 was 32 years and about 3 months old on 1 July 2025. That is below her limit of 33 years, so she qualified on age.
Not eligible: An unreserved man born on 10 May 2000 had already turned 25 on 1 July 2025. His limit was "not completed 25 years", so he was over age.
Domicile matters: An SC man from Bihar born in 1997 was 28 on 1 July 2025. Without UP domicile he falls under the unreserved limit of 25 years, so he was not eligible.
Post-wise Eligibility for Men and Women
The same notification covers several cadres, and some are open to only one gender. Giving an order of post preference in the application form is compulsory, so decide it carefully before you submit.
Post | Open to | Vacancies (2025) |
|---|---|---|
Constable Civil Police | Men and women | 10,469 |
Constable PAC / Armed Police | Men only | 15,131 |
Constable Special Security Force | Men only | 1,341 |
Female Constable, Women Battalion (Lucknow, Badaun, Gorakhpur) | Women only | 2,282 |
Constable Mounted Police | Men only | 71 |
Jail Warder (Male) | Men only | 3,279 |
Jail Warder (Female) | Women only | 106 |
Total | 32,679 |
The Board can change the number of vacancies before the exam, so treat these figures as the notified position.
Physical Standards and PET
Physical eligibility is checked in two qualifying rounds after the written test: the physical standard test (PST) during document verification, and then the physical efficiency test (PET).
Physical standard test
Standard | Unreserved, OBC, SC | ST |
|---|---|---|
Height (men) | 168 cm | 160 cm |
Chest (men), unexpanded / expanded | 79 cm / 84 cm | 77 cm / 82 cm |
Height (women) | 152 cm | 147 cm |
Weight (women) | 40 kg | 40 kg |
Chest expansion: Men must show at least 5 cm expansion, so 79 cm unexpanded and 84 cm expanded is the bare minimum, not 79 and 83.
Fresh measurement only: Measurements from earlier recruitments or from any outside institution are not accepted. Only the Board's PST team measures you.
Objection on the same day: If you dispute a measurement, object on the spot. A second measurement is done before a nodal officer, and that result is final.
Physical efficiency test
Men must run 4.8 km in 25 minutes and women 2.4 km in 14 minutes. The PET is pass or fail, and no candidate gets a chance after the last notified PET date for any reason, including pregnancy. The UP Police Constable exam pattern page explains how the PET fits into the selection process and the pace you need to hold.
Medical Fitness, Character and Marital Status
Medical fitness
You must be in good mental and bodily health and free from any defect likely to affect your duties. Before final approval, a medical board checks your height, chest and weight again and tests for knock knees, bow legs, flat feet, varicose veins, distant and near vision, full or partial colour blindness, hearing (including Rinne, Weber and vertigo tests) and speech defects. Under the service rules, persons with physical disabilities are not eligible for police service.
Character
Your character must make you suitable for government service, and the appointing authority verifies this. A person dismissed from service by the central or any state government, a local authority, or a government-owned corporation is not eligible. Nor is anyone convicted of an offence involving moral turpitude.
Marital status
A man with more than one living wife, or a woman who has married a man already having a living wife, is not eligible. Being unmarried or married with one spouse is no bar.
Preferential Qualifications
Preferential qualifications carry no marks. They matter only when two or more candidates have exactly the same marks, and then the candidate with one of these ranks higher:
Computer "O" level: A certificate from DOEACC Society (now NIELIT).
Territorial Army: At least two years of service.
NCC: A "B" certificate of the National Cadet Corps.
Only one preferential qualification is counted, even if you hold more. Because the 2026 cut-offs were very close and normalised to several decimal places, it is worth claiming one in your form if you have it and carrying the certificate to document verification.
Reservation and Domicile Rules
Vertical reservation (OBC, SC, ST and EWS) and the age relaxation linked to it are available only to candidates domiciled in Uttar Pradesh. Applicants from other states can apply, but they compete in the unreserved category. Horizontal reservation is provided for groups such as women, ex-servicemen, dependants of freedom fighters and home guards under state rules, and you must claim it in the form and prove it at document verification with certificates in the prescribed format.
Category certificates are checked against your application during scrutiny. If a certificate does not match the prescribed format or the government orders, it is rejected, and you lose the category benefit or your candidature.
Who Is Not Eligible
Class 12 result pending: Candidates who had only appeared for, or were yet to take, the Class 12 exam when applying.
Over or under age: Anyone outside the window for their category on 1 July 2025, even by a day.
Wrong category claim: Reserved candidates from outside Uttar Pradesh who apply claiming UP reservation or age relaxation.
Gender-post mismatch: Women applying for PAC, special security force or mounted police, and men for the women battalion.
Failed standards: Candidates who fall short in PST, do not finish the run in time or are declared medically unfit.
Fake or wrong documents: Any document found forged or false at or after scrutiny leads to cancellation and possible legal action.
Duplicate forms: Only your final application is accepted if you submit more than once.
