UP Police SI Syllabus: Section-wise Topics and Study Plan
The UP Police SI syllabus covers four sections of equal weight: General Hindi, Basic Law and Constitution with General Knowledge, Numerical and Mental Ability, and Mental Aptitude with Reasoning. The topics are published by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) in the recruitment notification for Sub-Inspector (Civil Police) and equivalent posts. The same structure was used for the 2025 recruitment of 4,543 posts.
This page turns that syllabus into a working checklist. For each section you will find the topics to cover, where to start, and which areas carry the most questions in practice. It also explains the qualifying rules that make every section count, and ends with a phased plan to finish the syllabus with time left for revision and mock tests.
Table of Contents
UP Police SI Syllabus
Section | Questions | Marks | Minimum to qualify |
|---|---|---|---|
General Hindi | 40 | 100 | 35 |
Basic Law / Constitution / General Knowledge | 40 | 100 | 35 |
Numerical and Mental Ability | 40 | 100 | 35 |
Mental Aptitude / IQ / Reasoning | 40 | 100 | 35 |
Total | 160 | 400 | 200 (50 percent) |
The paper is objective, lasts 2 hours in total, gives 2.5 marks for each correct answer, and has no negative marking. The question standard is roughly Class 10 for mathematics and graduation-level awareness for law and general knowledge. For timing and marking rules in detail, see the UP Police SI exam pattern.
Key Changes to Know
New criminal laws: The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) replaced the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act from 1 July 2024. The law topics for the 2025 recruitment reflect the new codes. Many older books and notes still quote IPC and CrPC section numbers, so check the edition before you study from it.
Sectional minimum: Each section needs at least 35 marks. A strong total cannot make up for one weak section.
Mental aptitude is not only reasoning: The fourth section includes police-specific aptitude topics such as public interest, crime control, gender sensitivity and communal harmony. Candidates who prepare only standard reasoning lose easy marks here.
Normalised scores: The 2025 paper ran in four shifts, and marks were normalised. Your final score may differ slightly from the raw score you calculate from the answer key.
General Hindi Syllabus
General Hindi tests grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. Questions are short and direct, which makes this one of the quickest sections to score in if your basics are strong.
Area | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Grammar (vyakaran) | Varnamala, sandhi, samas, upsarg, pratyay, ling, vachan, karak, kaal, vachya | Sandhi and samas |
Vocabulary | Paryayvachi, vilom, anekarthi shabd, ekarthi shabd, tatsam and tadbhav, vakyansh ke liye ek shabd | Tatsam-tadbhav and one-word substitution |
Usage | Vakya shuddhi, vartani shuddhi, shabd shuddhi, muhavare and lokoktiyan | Muhavare and lokoktiyan |
Comprehension | Apathit gadyansh (unseen passage) with questions | One passage a day |
Literature | Prominent Hindi poets and writers, their major works, Hindi literary awards | A list of key authors and works |
Sandhi, samas, muhavare and synonym or antonym questions together account for a large share of this section in most papers. Literature questions are fewer but predictable, so a two-page list of authors and works revised every week is enough.
Basic Law, Constitution and General Knowledge Syllabus
This section mixes static GK, current affairs and police-relevant law. It has the widest syllabus, so plan it across the full preparation period rather than in one block.
Basic law and Constitution
Indian Constitution: Preamble, fundamental rights and duties, directive principles, Parliament and state legislature, President and Governor, judiciary, emergency provisions, important amendments.
Criminal law basics: General principles of the BNS (offences, punishment, private defence), key BNSS procedures (FIR, arrest, bail, investigation) and basics of evidence under the BSA.
Protective and special laws: Laws on women and child protection (including POCSO and domestic violence), SC and ST protection, juvenile justice, information technology and cyber crime, right to information.
Human rights and police: Human rights commissions, police system and organisation in Uttar Pradesh, rights of an arrested person, traffic rules.
General knowledge
Area | Topics to cover |
|---|---|
History | Ancient, medieval and modern India, the national movement and its leaders |
Geography | Physical, economic and social geography of India, rivers, soils, climate, natural resources |
Economy | Basic economic concepts, budget, banking, agriculture, trade and industry, population |
Science and technology | Everyday science, computers and the internet, environment and pollution, scientific progress |
Uttar Pradesh GK | History, culture, fairs and festivals, geography, administration and major schemes of the state |
Current affairs | National and international events, awards, sports, books and authors, appointments, important days |
The Constitution, police-relevant laws and UP GK are where this section rewards focused study. Current affairs from the 12 months before the exam matter most, so keep monthly notes instead of reading news only in the final weeks.
Numerical and Mental Ability Syllabus
The mathematics in this section is mostly of Class 10 level. The difficulty comes from speed, because these questions take the longest to solve.
Area | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Number basics | Number system, simplification, decimals and fractions, HCF and LCM, square roots | Simplification |
Arithmetic | Percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, discount, partnership | Percentage |
Interest | Simple interest, compound interest | Simple interest |
Time-based | Time and work, time and distance | Time and distance |
Mensuration | Area and perimeter of plane figures, volume and surface area of solids | Plane figures |
Data | Use of tables and graphs, basic data interpretation | Table-based questions |
Mental ability | Number and letter series, arithmetical reasoning, mathematical puzzles | Number series |
Percentage is the foundation for profit and loss, interest and data questions, so finish it first. Learn squares up to 30, cubes up to 20 and common fraction-percentage equivalents. They cut calculation time across the whole section.
Mental Aptitude, IQ and Reasoning Syllabus
This section combines three types of questions. Standard reasoning and IQ questions follow familiar patterns. The mental aptitude part tests your attitude and understanding as a future police officer.
Reasoning and IQ
Area | Topics to cover |
|---|---|
Verbal reasoning | Analogy, classification (odd one out), series completion, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking and arrangement |
Logical reasoning | Venn diagrams, syllogism, statement and conclusion, cause and effect, strength of arguments, decision making |
Non-verbal reasoning | Figure series and classification, mirror and water images, embedded figures, space visualisation |
IQ | Time sequence, symbol and relationship interpretation, visual memory, observation, arranging in order |
Mental aptitude
Professional aptitude: Interest in the profession, mental toughness, adaptability and decision making under pressure.
Social awareness: Communal harmony, sensitivity towards minorities and underprivileged groups, gender sensitivity.
Policing themes: Rule of law, crime control, public interest, contemporary police issues and law and order.
Aptitude questions usually describe a situation and ask for the most appropriate response. The correct option is generally the one that follows the law, protects vulnerable people and stays calm and fair. Practising 20 to 30 such questions is usually enough to learn the pattern.
Priority Topics in Each Section
The board does not publish topic-wise weightage. The priorities below come from the structure of recent papers and are meant to help you order your study, not to predict exact question counts.
Section | Cover first | Cover next | Revise regularly |
|---|---|---|---|
General Hindi | Sandhi, samas, synonyms and antonyms | Muhavare, one-word substitution, sentence correction | Authors and works, spelling |
Law / Constitution / GK | Constitution, BNS and BNSS basics | Protective laws, UP GK, modern history | Current affairs, awards, sports |
Numerical and Mental Ability | Percentage, ratio, simplification | Profit and loss, interest, time and distance | Mensuration formulas, tables and graphs |
Mental Aptitude / Reasoning | Coding-decoding, series, analogy | Blood relations, direction, Venn diagrams | Situation-based aptitude questions |
Where the Sections Overlap
Area | Section 2 (Law / GK) | Section 4 (Mental Aptitude) | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
Police system and law and order | Factual questions on structure, laws and rights | Situation-based questions on correct conduct | Study the laws once, then practise situations |
Women, child and SC/ST protection | Provisions of the protective laws | Gender sensitivity and treatment of the underprivileged | Learn the purpose of each law, not only its name |
Series and arithmetic reasoning | Not applicable | Number series, arithmetic reasoning | Practise with Section 3 maths to save time |
Is There a Syllabus for the Physical Tests?
No. The physical standards test and the physical efficiency test have no written syllabus. They check height, chest or weight, and a timed run: 4.8 km in 28 minutes for men and 2.4 km in 16 minutes for women. Both stages are qualifying and add no marks, but failing either ends your candidature, so include running in your weekly routine alongside the written syllabus.
How to Cover the UP Police SI Syllabus
With cut-offs near 370 out of 400 in the 2025 cycle, the goal is high accuracy in every section rather than depth in one. A five-month plan could look like this:
Weeks 1 to 6, foundations: Hindi grammar, arithmetic basics and core reasoning topics. Start the Constitution and keep a daily habit of reading news.
Weeks 3 to 10, law and GK: Add BNS, BNSS and protective laws, then history, geography and UP GK. Spend 30 to 40 minutes a day on current affairs and keep monthly notes.
Weeks 7 to 14, topic tests: Take topic-wise tests in each section and 20-minute sectional tests to build speed. Add mental aptitude practice.
Weeks 12 to 18, full-length mocks: Two or three timed mocks a week, each followed by analysis on the same day. Keep an error log and revise from it.
Final 2 weeks: Revise short notes, formula sheets and current affairs. Take a few mocks at the actual exam time of day.
Topics can be revised in each notification, so check the syllabus in the latest advertisement on the official UPPRPB website when it is released.
