UP TGT Commerce Eligibility 2026: Qualification, Age Limit and Other Conditions

UP TGT Commerce eligibility comes down to three checks: a Commerce degree, a B.Ed or equivalent teacher-training qualification, and a minimum age of 21. The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) recruits Trained Graduate Teachers for government-aided secondary schools, and the Commerce post is open only to candidates whose degree matches the subject.

The last completed recruitment ran under Advt. No. 01/2022, and a fresh TGT advertisement had not been issued when this page was written. This guide explains the qualification and age rules as they stood in the latest cycle, how UPESSC's 2026 advertisements handle age, the domicile and reservation rules, the documents you will need, and the mistakes that most often disqualify Commerce applicants.

Educational Qualification for UP TGT Commerce

The TGT post is subject-specific. Qualification tables for the 2022 cycle list a B.Com with a B.Ed for the Commerce post. A general graduate with a B.Ed does not qualify for Commerce just because the B.Ed is in hand.

The degree requirement

  • Commerce graduation: a three-year B.Com, or an equivalent Commerce degree, from a university established by law in India.

  • Recognised institution: the university must be recognised. Degrees from unrecognised institutions are rejected at document verification, even if the exam score is high.

  • Result before the deadline: you must hold the qualification by the date the advertisement specifies. If your final-year result is pending, read the advertisement's rule on this before applying.

A minimum percentage for TGT Commerce was not part of the commonly reported 2022 qualification. Still, check the qualification table in the next advertisement, because UPESSC can add percentage conditions in a new notification.

The teacher-training requirement

You also need a B.Ed, or another teacher-training qualification that the advertisement accepts as equivalent for TGT posts. The B.Ed should be from an institution recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

A primary-level diploma such as D.El.Ed or BTC is designed for teaching Classes 1 to 5. It is generally not a substitute for a B.Ed at the TGT level, so do not rely on it unless the advertisement lists it.

Is a TET required?

Most summaries of the 2022 advertisement list only a degree and a B.Ed for Commerce, with no Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) score as an essential condition. This differs from primary-teacher recruitment in Uttar Pradesh, where a TET is mandatory. Policies on teacher qualifications can change, so confirm this point in the next TGT advertisement before you apply.

Common qualification questions

Your profile

Eligible for TGT Commerce?

B.Com + B.Ed

Yes, if both are from recognised institutions

B.Com + M.Com + B.Ed

Yes; the M.Com is extra and also opens the PGT route

B.A. or B.Sc + B.Ed

No, the degree must be in Commerce

BBA or BMS + B.Ed

Unclear; check whether the advertisement treats it as an equivalent Commerce degree

B.Com without B.Ed

No, a teacher-training qualification is essential

B.Com + D.El.Ed only

Generally no, unless the advertisement accepts it

For a degree that is not clearly B.Com, such as BBA or a business economics degree, the advertisement's equivalence rule decides. If you are unsure, do not assume; check the official wording.

UP TGT Commerce Age Limit

The age rule for UP TGT is simpler than in most government recruitments. There is a minimum age, but recent notices set no separate upper cut-off for applying.

Age rule

Details

Minimum age

21 years

Reference date

1 July of the recruitment year (1 July 2022 for Advt. No. 01/2022)

Upper limit

Linked to the retirement age of the post rather than a fixed recruitment cut-off

Retirement age in UPESSC's 2026 advertisements

62 years

Why some websites quote 60 or 62 as the maximum age

Listings for the 2022 cycle often show "maximum age 60", and listings for UPESSC's 2026 PGT advertisement show 62. In both cases they are quoting the age at which the post retires, not an upper limit chosen for the recruitment. UPESSC's PGT advertisement of September 2026 (Advt. No. 06/2026) sets a minimum of 21 years on 1 July 2026 and refers to 62 as the retirement age. The next TGT advertisement is likely to follow the same approach, but confirm it once it is released.

Does age relaxation apply?

Because there is no fixed upper cut-off below retirement, category-wise age relaxation makes little practical difference for TGT. Reserved-category candidates from Uttar Pradesh still receive their other reservation benefits, such as reserved seats and fee concessions, under state rules.

Checking the minimum age

To be eligible, you must have turned 21 on or before 1 July of the recruitment year. For example, if a new advertisement uses 1 July 2026 as the reference date, a candidate born on or before 1 July 2005 meets the minimum age. Use the exact date printed in the advertisement for your own calculation.

Nationality, Domicile and Reservation

  • Nationality: candidates must be citizens of India.

  • Applying from another state: you can apply, but you will be treated as an unreserved (general) candidate regardless of your category in your home state.

  • Reservation benefits: SC, ST, OBC, EWS, ex-servicemen, persons with disabilities and other reserved groups receive benefits only if they are domiciled in Uttar Pradesh and hold valid certificates issued under state rules.

  • Category certificates: certificates must be in the format and validity the advertisement prescribes. An OBC certificate, for instance, must normally be recent enough to establish the non-creamy-layer status the rules require.

Reservation matters a great deal in a small cadre like Commerce. In the 2022 cycle, all 38 Commerce posts were in boys' schools, and category-wise cut-offs differed by up to 12 marks between UR and SC.

Other Conditions for Appointment

Beyond qualification and age, UP recruitment rules quoted in past TGT advertisements include several general conditions.

  • Character: candidates must be of good character. Appointment can be refused on adverse verification.

  • Health: candidates must be mentally and physically fit to perform teaching duties.

  • Marital condition: the state's service rules, as quoted in past advertisements, bar a man with more than one living wife, or a woman married to a man who already has a living wife, unless exempted by the government.

  • Accurate application: every detail you enter must match your certificates. A mismatch in name, date of birth or category can cancel your candidature even after you clear the written exam.

Who Is Not Eligible

These are the situations that most often end a Commerce application:

  1. Wrong degree subject: applying for Commerce with a B.A. or B.Sc.

  2. No teacher-training qualification: a B.Com alone is not enough.

  3. Qualification not complete by the deadline: unless the advertisement allows pending results.

  4. Unrecognised degree or B.Ed: including distance programmes not approved for the purpose.

  5. Under 21 on the reference date: even by a single day.

  6. Claiming a reservation you cannot prove: including out-of-state candidates who select a reserved category.

Documents Needed for Verification

Eligibility is finally tested at document verification, which in the 2022 cycle covered about one and a half times the number of posts. Keep these ready before you apply:

Why it is needed

High School certificate

Proof of date of birth

B.Com mark sheets and degree

Proof of the subject qualification

B.Ed mark sheet and degree

Proof of teacher training

Category certificate

Required to claim SC, ST, OBC or EWS reservation

Domicile certificate

Required to claim Uttar Pradesh reservation benefits

Disability or ex-servicemen certificate

Only if you claim that category

Application Fee

Fees are set by each advertisement. For reference, the 2022 TGT cycle charged Rs. 750 for General and OBC, Rs. 450 for EWS and SC, and Rs. 250 for ST candidates, including the processing charge. UPESSC's 2026 PGT advertisement charges Rs. 1,500 for General, OBC and EWS, Rs. 750 for SC and ST, and Rs. 500 for candidates with disabilities. The next TGT fee may follow the newer structure, so confirm it in the TGT advertisement itself.

Eligibility Self-Check Before You Apply

Run through this list once you have the new advertisement in hand:

  • Degree: is it a B.Com, or a degree the advertisement explicitly treats as equivalent?

  • Training: do you hold an NCTE-recognised B.Ed or an accepted equivalent?

  • Timing: will both qualifications be complete by the stated deadline?

  • Age: were you 21 or older on the reference date?

  • Category: do you have valid Uttar Pradesh category and domicile certificates if you claim reservation?

  • Consistency: do your name and date of birth match across every certificate?

Where to Check Official Eligibility Rules

The qualification table, age reference date, reservation rules and fee are all printed in the advertisement on upessc.up.gov.in.
