UP TGT Commerce Exam Pattern 2026: New 360-Mark Scheme, Sections and Marking
The UP TGT Commerce exam pattern is changing. The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) held the last Trained Graduate Teacher exam on 3 and 4 June 2026 under Advt. No. 01/2022, using a 125-question, 500-mark paper with no negative marking. In August 2026, the commission published a revised scheme for TGT and PGT recruitment that cuts the paper to 120 questions, adds a General Studies section and brings in negative marking.
This page explains both versions side by side, so you know what the next Commerce paper is expected to look like and why older guides no longer match it. You will find the section-wise split, the marking rules, a worked example of how negative marking changes your guessing strategy, the selection process, and a time plan for the two-hour paper.

Key Changes to Know
Fewer questions, lower total: the paper drops from 125 questions and 500 marks to 120 questions and 360 marks. Each correct answer is now worth 3 marks instead of 4.
General Studies becomes compulsory: 30 questions, or a quarter of the paper, now test general awareness instead of Commerce.
Negative marking arrives: a wrong answer now costs you marks, so blind guessing is no longer free.
Still no interview for TGT: the written score alone decides merit. The 40-mark interview in the revised scheme applies only to PGT.
Older pages, including many that were accurate before August 2026, may still show the 125-question, no-negative-marking paper. Follow the scheme printed in the official advertisement for your cycle.
Revised UP TGT Commerce Exam Pattern
Under the revised scheme, the Commerce paper has two parts answered in a single two-hour sitting. UPESSC has already applied this structure in its PGT advertisement (Advt. No. 06/2026), which sets out 30 General Knowledge questions and 90 subject questions for 360 marks. The TGT version is expected to mirror it.
Section | Questions | Marks per question | Total marks |
|---|---|---|---|
Commerce (concerned subject) | 90 | 3 | 270 |
General Studies | 30 | 3 | 90 |
Total | 120 | 3 | 360 |
Commerce section: 90 questions
This section still carries three-quarters of the marks, so it remains the core of your preparation. The Commerce syllabus has been organised in seven units: Accounts, Audit, Business Statistics, Business Organisation and Management, Business Economics, Business Finance, and Income Tax and Corporate Tax Planning. The commission released a revised subject syllabus with the new scheme, so compare your topic list with the latest official PDF before you finalise your plan.
Accounts usually demands the most practice because it mixes theory with calculation. Economics and Statistics reward formula and concept revision, while Management, Finance, Audit and Tax are mostly conceptual. Our UP TGT Commerce syllabus guide lists every unit with a suggested study order.
General Studies section: 30 questions
The General Studies part is common to all TGT subjects. Reports on the revised syllabus list these areas:
Indian history and culture: ancient, medieval and modern India, with emphasis on the national movement.
Geography: physical, social and economic geography of India and Uttar Pradesh.
Polity: the Constitution, rights and duties, Parliament and local self-government.
Indian economy: planning, reforms, national income and development.
General science: everyday physics, chemistry and biology.
Uttar Pradesh GK: the state's history, culture, geography and government schemes.
Current affairs: important national and international events.
Commerce graduates have a small head start here: the economy questions overlap with Business Economics and Business Finance. Download the official General Studies syllabus to confirm the exact list.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Each correct answer earns 3 marks. A wrong answer has been reported to cost one-third of that, which is 1 mark. This matches the rule UPESSC printed in its 2026 Assistant Professor and Principal advertisements. Treat the exact deduction as provisional until the TGT advertisement confirms it.
Response | Revised pattern | Previous pattern |
|---|---|---|
Correct answer | +3 | +4 |
Wrong answer | -1 (to be confirmed) | 0 |
Question left blank | 0 | 0 |
How negative marking changes guessing
With four options and a 1-mark penalty, the arithmetic is simple. A pure guess gives you a one-in-four chance of 3 marks and a three-in-four chance of losing 1 mark. On average that works out to zero, so random guessing neither helps nor hurts over many questions. It only adds risk.
Everything changes once you can rule out options:
One option eliminated: a guess between three choices averages about +0.33 marks per question.
Two options eliminated: a guess between two choices averages +1 mark per question.
No option eliminated: the expected gain is zero, so leaving it blank is usually the sensible choice.
The rule of thumb: attempt a question if you can confidently cut at least one option. This is very different from the old paper, where attempting all 125 questions was the obvious strategy.
Previous Pattern Used in the June 2026 Exam
The written exam under Advt. No. 01/2022 followed the older scheme. It is useful to know because previous-year papers and their cut-offs are based on it.
Feature | Details |
|---|---|
Exam dates | 3 and 4 June 2026 |
Questions | 125 multiple-choice questions |
Marks | 4 per correct answer, 500 in total |
Negative marking | None |
Duration | 2 hours |
Language | Questions printed in Hindi and English |
Under that scheme, serving ad hoc teachers who were eligible for service weightage had their written score counted out of 465 marks (3.72 per question), with the balance coming from weightage. This applied only to that group, and the next advertisement will state whether any similar provision continues.
When you solve old Commerce papers, remember the change in scale. A score of 400 out of 500 equals 80 per cent, which on the new paper would correspond to 288 out of 360 before any negative marks. Compare percentages, not raw scores.
Selection Process for UP TGT Commerce
TGT selection is a two-step process with no interview.
Written examination: the only scored stage. Candidates are ranked subject-wise and category-wise on their written marks.
Document verification: in the 2022 cycle, the commission called about one and a half times the number of posts for eligibility and document checks before the final result. Your degree, B.Ed, category and identity documents must match what you entered in the application.
After the final result, selected candidates are allotted institutions. In the 2022 cycle, the final result came on 28 July 2026 and institution allotment followed on 9 September 2026. Before you apply, make sure you meet the qualification and age rules on our UP TGT Commerce eligibility page.
UP TGT vs UP PGT Commerce Pattern
Many Commerce aspirants with an M.Com and B.Ed consider both posts. The written papers now share the same shape, but the selection differs.
Particular | TGT Commerce | PGT Commerce |
|---|---|---|
Teaching level | Classes 6 to 10 | Classes 11 and 12 |
Written paper | 120 questions, 360 marks | 120 questions, 360 marks |
Section split | 90 Commerce + 30 General Studies | 90 Commerce + 30 General Knowledge |
Interview | None | 40 marks |
Merit total | 360 | 400 |
Subject depth | Mainly undergraduate level | Postgraduate level |
If you prepare for PGT Commerce, much of the Accounts, Economics and General Studies work carries over to TGT. The difference lies in depth and in the interview.
What the Pattern Means for Your Preparation
Accuracy now matters as much as coverage: with a 1-mark penalty, three wrong answers cancel one right answer. Track your accuracy in every practice test, not just your score.
General Studies is worth 90 marks: that is a quarter of the paper. In a subject where the last merit list was decided by a few questions, ignoring this section is a real risk.
Accounts still decides the ranking: the 90 Commerce questions are where most candidates will separate. Daily problem practice in Accounts remains the single most valuable habit.
Old cut-offs need translating: previous cut-offs were set on a 500-mark paper without negative marking. Use them as a percentage benchmark rather than a raw target.
Time Management Plan for the Two-Hour Paper
You get 120 minutes for 120 questions, or one minute per question on average. Commerce numericals take longer than General Studies recall questions, so plan the time unevenly.
Block | Time | What to do |
|---|---|---|
General Studies | About 20 minutes | Answer the questions you know quickly; mark doubtful ones |
Commerce theory | About 45 minutes | Management, Economics, Finance, Audit and Tax concepts |
Commerce numericals | About 40 minutes | Accounts and Statistics calculations |
Review | About 15 minutes | Revisit marked questions; attempt only where you can eliminate options; check OMR bubbling |
Some candidates prefer to start with Commerce while their focus is fresh. Either order works, as long as you test it in full-length practice first. Do not change your sequence on exam day.
OMR habits that save marks
Bubble as you go: transferring answers in the last ten minutes leads to rushed, shifted entries.
Keep a mark for doubtful questions: note them on the question paper so your review time is spent where it counts.
Never darken two circles: under negative marking, a double-marked question is likely to be treated as wrong.
How to Practise in the New Pattern
Your practice tests should copy the revised paper exactly: 90 Commerce and 30 General Studies questions, 120 minutes, +3 for correct answers and -1 for wrong ones. Many older question banks still use the 125-question format, so adjust the marking yourself if needed.
After each test, sort your mistakes into three groups: questions you got wrong through a concept gap, questions you answered too slowly, and questions you skipped but could have solved.Where to Verify the Official Exam Pattern
The exam scheme, syllabus PDFs, advertisements, answer keys and results are all published on the commission's website, upessc.up.gov.in. When the next TGT advertisement is released, read its examination scheme section before you change your plan, and treat any figure on a third-party site, including this one, as something to confirm there.
