AFMC Nursing Exam Pattern 2026: ToGIGE and Stages
The AFMC Nursing exam pattern is a staged selection rather than one entrance paper. Your NEET UG score decides whether you are shortlisted. Shortlisted candidates then take ToGIGE, a short computer-based test, followed by a psychological assessment, an interview and a medical examination for the B.Sc Nursing course at the AFMS Colleges of Nursing.
ToGIGE is only 30 minutes long and carries negative marking, so how you use your time matters as much as what you know. This page sets out each stage for the 2026 cycle, the marking rules, what the numbers mean for your strategy and what has changed from older versions of the test.

Stage 1: NEET UG
NEET UG is conducted by NTA and covers Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) for a total of 720 marks. Check the number of questions, timing and marking for your year in the official bulletin on the NEET UG website of NTA. After the result, you apply on the Join Indian Army portal and DGAFMS shortlists candidates for screening on the basis of NEET UG scores. The shortlisting score is not published in advance.
Stage 2: ToGIGE pattern
ToGIGE, the Test of General Intelligence and General English, is held during screening. Recent cycles have held screening at Base Hospital, Delhi Cantt, but confirm the venue and date on your call letter.
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
ToGIGE (General Intelligence and General English), computer-based | 40 MCQs | 80 (2 per correct answer) | 30 minutes |
Negative marking | Applies to every question | Minus 0.5 per wrong answer | Within the same 30 minutes |
The split between reasoning and English questions has not been published. Prepare both areas evenly.
Marking scheme and negative marking
Correct answer: Plus 2 marks.
Wrong answer: Minus 0.5 marks.
Unattempted question: No marks. The reported pattern sets a deduction only for wrong answers.
Example: if you attempt 34 questions and get 30 right and 4 wrong, your score is 60 minus 2, which is 58 out of 80.
What the pattern means for you
About 45 seconds per question: Forty questions in 30 minutes leaves no time to wrestle with one hard puzzle. Move on and come back if time allows.
Guessing has a cost: A wrong answer takes away a quarter of a correct one. If you can rule out two of four options, a guess is usually worth it; a blind guess is not.
Accuracy beats attempts: Thirty accurate answers score more than 40 attempts with many errors, so practise for accuracy first and speed second.
NEET carries the most weight: No ToGIGE score helps if you are not shortlisted, so NEET UG preparation stays the main priority until the NEET exam.
Psychological assessment, interview and medicals
Psychological assessment
This stage assesses personality and suitability for military nursing. Answer honestly and consistently; trying to give the expected answer often shows up as inconsistency.
Interview
A board of officers asks about your Class 12 subjects, current affairs, the Military Nursing Service, your background and why you want to serve. Clear communication and confidence count.
Medical examination
A Special Medical Board checks fitness against AFMS standards, including height and weight. A candidate declared unfit can appeal to an Appeal Medical Board within the time limit set in the notification. Candidates must stay until their medical status is declared.
Final merit
As reported from the notification, final merit combines the NEET UG score with performance in ToGIGE and the interview, subject to medical fitness. NCC 'C' certificates and sports achievements may also be considered. The weightage of each component has not been published, so no exact formula can be given. Colleges are allotted by merit, your preferences and the seats available.
Time management and exam-day strategy
First pass, about 18 minutes: Answer every question you can solve quickly, such as synonyms, error spotting and simple series.
Second pass, about 10 minutes: Return to marked questions, such as puzzles and longer passages, and answer those you can narrow down.
Last 2 minutes: Check that no answered question was left unsaved, and leave blind guesses blank.
Older pattern and official source
Before 2022, the army nursing entrance was a separate computer-based exam with General English, General Intelligence and Science sections. Some pages also describe ToELR, which belongs to MBBS admission at AFMC. Older pages may still show these, so follow the current notification on the Join Indian Army portal.
