Written Test Pattern
Particular | Details |
|---|---|
Questions and marks | 100 MCQs, 100 marks |
Subjects | Logical reasoning, aptitude and English comprehension; history and culture of Assam and India; general knowledge |
Negative marking | 0.5 mark per wrong answer |
Mode | Offline, OMR answer sheet |
Language | Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, English |
Duration | Not stated in the latest advertisement (the 2018 SI advertisement set 3 hours) |
The advertisement does not give a fixed number of questions for each subject. Pages that show a 35-35-30 split are not quoting the official notice. The full pattern is on the Assam Police SI exam pattern page.
Syllabus Summary
SLPRB names three subject groups but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The table below is a working checklist built from those groups.
Subject group | Main topics |
|---|---|
Logical reasoning, aptitude and English comprehension | Series, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, syllogism, puzzles; percentage, ratio, averages, profit and loss, time and work; reading passages, grammar, vocabulary |
History and culture of Assam and India | Ancient, medieval and modern India; the freedom movement; Kamarupa, the Ahom and Koch kingdoms, the Vaishnavite movement, festivals, tribes and culture of Assam |
General knowledge | Current affairs, Indian polity, geography, economy, science, sports, awards and Assam-specific GK |
The detailed topic list is on the Assam Police SI syllabus page.
Physical Efficiency Test
PET carries 40 marks and every event is also qualifying. Missing the minimum in any event ends your candidature.
Event | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
Race (20 marks) | 1600 m: full marks at 300 seconds or less; disqualified above 450 seconds | 800 m: full marks at 160 seconds or less; disqualified above 240 seconds |
Long jump (20 marks, 3 attempts) | Minimum 335 cm; full marks at 500 cm | Minimum 244 cm; full marks at 389 cm |
A faster run or longer jump earns more marks on a sliding scale, so the PET directly moves your final rank.
Salary and Service Conditions
Pay: Pay Band 2, Rs. 14,000 to Rs. 70,000, plus grade pay of Rs. 8,700 and admissible allowances.
Training: Selected candidates must complete basic training; failing it after three chances leads to discharge.
Bond: Candidates must serve at least 3 years after posting or refund training and travel costs.
Posting: Anywhere in Assam, regardless of the district you applied from.
In-hand salary depends on allowances and posting, so treat any figure you see elsewhere as an estimate.
Previous Cut-off
Reported written test cut-offs for SI (UB) male candidates from the test held on 5 January 2025 were 65.5 for Unreserved, 62 for OBC/MOBC, 60.5 for SC, 58.5 for ST (P), 55.5 for Tea Tribes and Adivasi Communities and 42.5 for ST (H), out of 100. These are a benchmark only, since cut-offs change with vacancies and difficulty. See the Assam Police SI cut-off page for details.
How to Prepare
Protect your accuracy: With 0.5 negative marking, a wrong answer costs half a mark, so skip questions you cannot narrow down.
Give Assam history its due: The history and culture group is Assam-specific, and generic material does not cover it.
Train for PET from day one: The race and long jump carry 40 of 150 marks, so running and jumping practice should start alongside study.
Check your height and eyesight early: PST and medical are pass-or-fail, so confirm you meet them before investing months.
For timed practice in an objective format with negative marking, you can attempt online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to find weak areas. Pair them with the previous year question papers to understand the real difficulty level.
