Assam Police SI Exam Pattern: Marks and Stages
The Assam Police SI exam pattern has four scored parts: a 100-mark written test, a 40-mark physical efficiency test (PET), a 5-mark viva-voce and up to 5 bonus marks for NCC certificates. The physical standard test (PST) and medical check are qualifying only. This pattern comes from the advertisement issued by the State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB), Assam, on 12 December 2025 for Sub Inspector (UB) and related posts.
Your final rank is decided out of 150 marks, and the PET alone carries 40 of them. That makes physical preparation as important as study. This page explains every stage, the PET scoring scale and how the final merit is calculated.

Written Test Pattern
Particular | Details |
|---|---|
Questions | 100 multiple-choice questions |
Marks | 1 mark per correct answer, 100 in total |
Negative marking | 0.5 mark deducted per wrong answer |
Subject groups | Logical reasoning, aptitude and English comprehension; history and culture of Assam and India; general knowledge |
Mode | Offline, OMR answer sheet |
Language | Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, English |
Duration | Not stated in the 2025 advertisement; the 2018 SI advertisement set 3 hours |
The advertisement does not fix how many questions come from each subject group. Check the duration on your admit card. Topics for each group are listed on the Assam Police SI syllabus page.
Negative Marking Explained
Every wrong answer costs half a mark, while a blank answer costs nothing. Suppose you attempt 80 questions and get 70 right:
Item | Marks |
|---|---|
70 correct answers | +70 |
10 wrong answers | -5 |
20 unanswered | 0 |
Written score | 65 |
With four options, a blind guess loses marks on average. Once you can rule out one option, a guess roughly breaks even, and once you can rule out two, it pays off. Guess only when you can narrow the choice.
PET Scoring Scale
Each PET event carries 20 marks. Marks rise on a sliding scale, and missing the minimum in any event disqualifies you. The slabs below are from the official advertisement.
Men
1600 m race time | Marks |
|---|---|
300 seconds or less | 20 |
301 to 330 seconds | Falls by 0.12 per second, to 16.4 at 330 |
331 to 370 seconds | Falls by 0.08 per second, to 13.2 at 370 |
371 to 410 seconds | Falls by 0.05 per second, to 11.2 at 410 |
411 to 450 seconds | Falls by 0.03 per second, to 10 at 450 |
Above 450 seconds | Disqualified |
Long jump distance | Marks |
|---|---|
Below 335 cm | Disqualified |
335 cm (minimum) | 10 |
336 to 400 cm | Rises by 0.04 per cm, to 12.6 at 400 |
401 to 450 cm | Rises by 0.06 per cm, to 15.6 at 450 |
451 to 480 cm | Rises by 0.08 per cm, to 18 at 480 |
481 to 500 cm | Rises by 0.10 per cm, to 20 at 500 |
Women
800 m race time | Marks |
|---|---|
160 seconds or less | 20 |
161 to 180 seconds | Falls by 0.16 per second, to 16.8 at 180 |
181 to 200 seconds | Falls by 0.14 per second, to 14 at 200 |
201 to 220 seconds | Falls by 0.12 per second, to 11.6 at 220 |
221 to 240 seconds | Falls by 0.08 per second, to 10 at 240 |
Above 240 seconds | Disqualified |
Long jump distance | Marks |
|---|---|
Below 244 cm | Disqualified |
244 cm (minimum) | 10 |
245 to 289 cm | Rises by 0.04 per cm, to 11.8 at 289 |
290 to 319 cm | Rises by 0.06 per cm, to 13.6 at 319 |
320 to 349 cm | Rises by 0.08 per cm, to 16 at 349 |
350 to 389 cm | Rises by 0.10 per cm, to 20 at 389 |
Candidates get three attempts at the long jump. Just qualifying both events earns 20 of 40 marks, so every second cut from your run time and every centimetre added to your jump raises your rank.
PST and Medical Examination
PST checks height, chest (men only) and weight against the standards in the advertisement. It carries no marks, and failing it ends your candidature. The medical examination is done before the PST and covers eyesight (6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other without glasses), colour vision and general fitness. The full standards are on the Assam Police SI eligibility page.
Viva-Voce and NCC Marks
Viva-voce: Up to 5 marks. Shortlisting is 2 times the vacancies, based on written and PET marks combined.
NCC bonus: 5 marks for a C certificate, 3 for B and 2 for A.
Final Merit Calculation
The final merit list is prepared category-wise out of 150 marks. A worked example:
Component | Candidate score | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
Written test | 68 | 100 |
PET | 30 | 40 |
NCC (B certificate) | 3 | 5 |
Viva-voce | 3 | 5 |
Total | 104 | 150 |
If two candidates have the same total, the older candidate ranks higher. If the date of birth is also the same, the taller candidate ranks higher.
Some older pages describe a 200-mark scheme with a computer proficiency test and extra-curricular marks. That scheme does not appear in the December 2025 advertisement, so follow the official notification.
What the Pattern Means for You
Clear the written shortlist first: Only about 5 candidates per post reach the PET, so the written score decides whether you get a chance at the remaining 50 marks.
Treat PET as a scoring stage: The gap between a qualifying and a top PET score is 20 marks, more than the viva and NCC can add together.
Manage negative marking: High accuracy on 80 to 90 attempts usually beats risky attempts on all 100.
Do not ignore NCC: A C certificate adds 5 marks, which can move you up many places in a close merit list.
To build speed and accuracy for the written test, you can take full-length online tests on Testkart with negative marking and review the section-wise analysis after each attempt. Pair this with a regular running and long jump routine timed against the PET scale.
