Bihar Police Constable Eligibility Criteria: Age Limit, Qualification and Physical Standards

Before you plan your preparation for the Bihar Police Constable exam, it helps to be sure you actually qualify to apply. The Central Selection Board of Constables (CSBC), Bihar, sets the eligibility rules in each recruitment advertisement, and a candidate who fails even one condition can be rejected at the document or physical stage, long after the written exam is over. This guide explains who can apply, the age limit and relaxation, the educational qualification, and the physical standards you must meet.

The figures here follow the large constable recruitment under Advt. No. 01/2025 (19,838 posts), as reported by multiple exam portals. CSBC publishes a new advertisement for every recruitment, and separate posts such as Operator, Driver Constable and Special Branch have their own rules. Always confirm every number against the latest notice on the official CSBC website before you apply.

Not required

The constable post is an entry-level position, so the conditions are simple compared with officer-level exams. The part that trips up most candidates is the physical standard, because it is measured on the day and cannot be improved by studying.

Nationality and Domicile

Only Indian citizens can apply. The advertisement states the nationality rule in its general conditions, and you may be asked to support it with your identity and residence documents.

Domicile deserves a careful read. Reservation benefits in Bihar recruitments are normally linked to a valid category certificate in the format given in the notice, and candidates should check the advertisement to see whether the vacancy or the relaxation is open only to residents of Bihar. If you belong to a reserved category in another state, do not assume the same benefit applies in Bihar. Read the reservation clause before you choose your category in the form, because a wrong category claim can lead to cancellation of candidature.

Bihar Police Constable Age Limit and Relaxation

The age limit is the condition that most often decides whether a candidate can apply at all. The minimum age is 18 years for every category. The maximum age is 25 years for General candidates, and reserved categories get extra years.

Home Guard relaxation is reported differently across portals. Some sources describe a 5-year relaxation for trained or enrolled Home Guards in Bihar regardless of category, while others link it to reserved categories. Treat the advertisement as the final word.

How age is calculated

Your age is taken from the date of birth printed on your matriculation (Class 10) certificate or an equivalent certificate. It is counted as on the reference date given in the advertisement. The reference date is not the exam date and not the day you apply, so a candidate who is a few months short of 18 or a few months over the limit on that date will not be accepted, however close the margin.

A quick way to check yourself:

  • Find the reference date: It is stated in the age section of the advertisement.

  • Subtract your date of birth: Use the date on your matriculation certificate, not your Aadhaar or other documents, if they differ.

  • Add the relaxation: Add the extra years for your category to the General limit of 25 years.

  • Compare: If your age on the reference date lies between 18 and your category limit, you meet the age condition.

For example, a female BC candidate gets a maximum of 28 years. If she turns 28 before the reference date, she is not eligible, even if she is still 28 on the day of the exam. If the date of birth differs between your documents, get it corrected well before applying, because the mismatch can cause trouble at document verification.

Age relaxation for other groups

Besides category relaxation, the advertisement may carry additional relaxation for groups such as ex-servicemen, persons with disabilities and eligible Bihar government employees. The amount and the conditions differ between notices, and several portals do not mention them at all. If you belong to one of these groups, find the relaxation table in the official notice and keep the supporting certificate ready.

Educational Qualification

The minimum qualification is Intermediate (10+2) from a recognised board or an equivalent. No particular stream is required, so arts, science and commerce students are all eligible. The advertisement does not ask for a minimum percentage for the constable post. Graduates and postgraduates can also apply, since a higher qualification meets a minimum requirement.

Shastri (with English), Bihar State Sanskrit Education Board

Acharya (without English), Bihar State Sanskrit Education Board

Matriculation (Class 10) only

Not sufficient

One point that confuses many aspirants is the exam difficulty. The written test is set at around matriculation level, but the qualification needed to apply is Class 12. Do not mix the two.

Can final-year students apply?

Qualification is usually checked against the closing date of the online application, as stated in the notice. If your Class 12 result is not declared by that date, you may be treated as ineligible for that cycle. Read the cut-off date clause in the advertisement and do not apply on the hope that the result will come in time.

Physical Standard Test (PST) Requirements

Meeting the PST is part of eligibility, because candidates who fall short are not taken forward. The measurements below are those commonly reported for the 2025 cycle.

Standards for men

Minimum height

Chest unexpanded

Chest expanded

General and BC

81 cm

86 cm

SC and ST

84 cm

Chest expansion should be at least 5 cm. The height for EBC candidates is reported as 160 cm by some sources and 165 cm by others, so check the advertisement for your exact figure.

Standards for women

Minimum height

155 cm for all categories

Minimum weight

Tips to meet the PST

  • Measure yourself early: Check your height and chest at home against the table before you apply so there are no surprises.

  • Practise chest expansion: Regular breathing exercises, running and push-ups can help you reach the expanded chest figure safely.

  • Do not rely on tricks: Measurement is done by officials under supervision, and any attempt to manipulate it can lead to disqualification.

Medical Fitness and Character Verification

Clearing the written test and the physical stages is not the end. Selected candidates go through a medical examination and character verification. The medical test checks general fitness, vision and other conditions required for police duty. Character verification looks into your background, and any criminal case, false information or concealed fact in the application can lead to rejection even after selection. If any case is pending against you, read the advertisement carefully and consult the official helpdesk before applying.

Number of Attempts

There is no cap on attempts. You can apply in every recruitment as long as you are within the age limit on the reference date. That makes age, and not the number of tries, the real limit. A candidate in the General category who is 23 has, in practical terms, only a couple of recruitment cycles left, and should plan accordingly.

Documents to Keep Ready

The list in your notice is final, but these documents are usually needed at application or verification time.

  • Matriculation certificate: Proof of date of birth and name.

  • Intermediate certificate or mark sheet: Proof of educational qualification.

  • Category certificate: In the prescribed format and issued by the competent authority, if you claim reservation or relaxation.

  • Photo identity and address proof: As specified in the notice.

  • Recent photograph and signature: For the online form and the admit card.

  • Home Guard, ex-serviceman or disability certificate: Only if you claim the related benefit.

Make sure the name and date of birth are spelt the same on every document. Small spelling differences between certificates are one of the most common reasons for delay at verification.

Common Eligibility Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using an old article: Eligibility numbers are copied from one page to another, and some pages still show figures from earlier recruitments. Use the latest notice as the source.

  • Ignoring the reference date: Many candidates count age on the exam date and apply when they are already over the limit.

  • Assuming Class 10 is enough: The exam is matric level, but the eligibility qualification is Class 12 or equivalent.

  • Claiming the wrong category: Apply under the category your certificate supports, in the prescribed format.

  • Skipping the physical check: Meeting the written cut-off means little if you do not meet the height or chest standard.

Eligibility for Other Bihar Police Posts

CSBC recruits for several posts besides the general duty constable, including Operator, Driver Constable and Special Branch constable. These posts can ask for different qualifications, age limits or technical skills. The details in this guide apply to the constable recruitment mentioned above and should not be assumed for other posts. Confirm the post name and advertisement number before you check your eligibility.

How Eligibility Connects to the Selection Process

The selection runs through a written test, physical standard and efficiency tests, document verification, and medical and character checks. The written test is a qualifying round, and the merit is prepared on Physical Efficiency Test marks. Because of this, it makes sense to confirm your physical eligibility first and begin running practice early. For the official advertisement, age reference date and the latest updates, refer to the Central Selection Board of Constables, Bihar.
