BPSC Assistant Professor Eligibility: Qualification and Age
BPSC Assistant Professor eligibility depends on the department and subject of the post. The Bihar Public Service Commission recruits Assistant Professors for state medical colleges and hospitals, Ayurvedic and homoeopathic colleges, and government engineering colleges. Each of these follows the norms of its own regulator: the National Medical Commission (NMC) for medical posts, the AYUSH councils for Ayurveda and homoeopathy, and AICTE for engineering. That is why there is no single eligibility rule for every BPSC Assistant Professor advertisement.
This page explains the qualification, experience, age and other conditions reported in recent advertisements, and who is not eligible. It also clears up a common confusion: NET or SET is the usual route for university Assistant Professor posts under the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC), but it is not the core requirement for most BPSC posts. Since the 2025 medical college advertisements were withdrawn in October 2026, the fresh notice will confirm the rules for the next cycle.

Educational Qualification by Type of Post
Medical college Assistant Professor
For the withdrawn 2025 medical college advertisements (Advt. Nos. 04/2025 to 28/2025), the qualification was reported as an MD or MS in the relevant speciality from a recognised institution. Dental posts required an MDS in the relevant subject. These rules follow the NMC's norms for teachers in medical institutions.
Recognised degree: The MBBS and PG degrees must be recognised under NMC rules. Degrees from institutions without recognition do not qualify.
Same subject: The PG degree must be in the speciality of the advertisement. An MD in General Medicine does not qualify for a Paediatrics post, for example.
Bihar Health Service officers: Reports on the 2025 cycle also mentioned a route for Bihar Health Service officers with a PG degree in the subject and the required teaching experience. Confirm this in the fresh advertisement.
Ayurvedic college Assistant Professor
The 2025 Ayurveda advertisements for Government Ayurvedic Colleges at Patna and Begusarai reported these requirements:
BAMS degree: From a university recognised under the NCISM schedule, with compulsory internship completed.
PG degree: MD or MS (Ayurveda) in the subject of the post.
Registration: Valid registration with the Bihar State Ayurvedic and Unani Medical Council, or registration obtained before joining.
Teacher code: A teacher code from NCISM as per AYUSH guidelines.
Homoeopathic college Assistant Professor
The 2025 advertisement for 13 posts at the government homoeopathic medical college in Muzaffarpur reported a BHMS degree from a recognised institution, an MD (Homoeopathy) in the relevant subject and completed internship.
Engineering college Assistant Professor
For the 2022 Computer Science and Engineering advertisement, the reported qualification was a B.E., B.Tech, B.S. or B.Sc (Engg.) and an M.E., M.Tech, M.S. or integrated M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, with first class or equivalent in either the bachelor's or master's degree. This matches the AICTE norm for Assistant Professor in engineering.
Requirement | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
Relevant branch | Both degrees should be in the branch of the post, or in a branch the advertisement accepts as equivalent |
First class | First class in at least one of the two degrees; check how your university converts CGPA to percentage |
Applied science posts | For subjects such as Physics in engineering colleges, a postgraduate degree in the subject with the classification the advertisement specifies |
Teaching and Residency Experience
Experience works in two ways in BPSC Assistant Professor recruitment. For medical posts, it is part of eligibility. For most posts, it also earns marks in the merit list.
Type of post | Experience for eligibility | Experience for marks (as reported) |
|---|---|---|
Medical college | About three years as Senior Resident, Registrar or Tutor in the subject in a recognised medical college after the PG degree | 2 marks for each completed year of government service, up to 10 marks |
Ayurvedic college | Not reported as mandatory | 2 marks per year in government institutions, up to 10 marks |
Homoeopathic college | Not reported as mandatory | Work experience counted in merit; marks not confirmed |
Engineering college | Not mandatory at entry level under AICTE norms | As stated in the advertisement |
Experience is usually counted only when backed by an appointment letter and a joining or charge-taking report issued by a competent authority. Keep these for every post you have held, including short contractual spells.
Do You Need NET, SET or a PhD?
This is the most common question on this topic, and the answer depends on which commission you are applying to.
BPSC medical and AYUSH posts: NET or SET is not required. Your clinical PG degree and experience are the main requirements.
BPSC engineering posts: NET or SET is not required. AICTE norms rely on the B.E. or B.Tech and M.E. or M.Tech with first class.
PhD: Not required for entry at Assistant Professor level in these posts. A PhD, DM, MCh or DNB super-speciality can earn extra marks in medical merit schemes.
University posts under BSUSC: These follow UGC norms, where NET, SET or a PhD is the usual route. If this is your target, follow BSUSC rather than BPSC.

Age Limit and Relaxation
Age limits for BPSC Assistant Professor posts are higher than for most state jobs, because candidates need several years of postgraduate study and experience. Each advertisement states the age reference date.
Type of post | Age limit reported | Reference |
|---|---|---|
Medical college (2025, withdrawn) | Maximum 45 years for the general category, with relaxation | As on 1 August 2025, as reported |
Ayurvedic college (2025) | Minimum 27 years, maximum 45 years, with relaxation | As stated in the advertisement |
Homoeopathic college (2025) | Minimum 27 years, maximum 45 years, with relaxation | As stated in the advertisement |
Engineering college (2022 Computer Science and Engineering) | Reported as 22 to 65 years | As on 1 August 2022, as reported |
Category-wise upper age limit (medical college, indicative)
Summaries of the 2025 medical college advertisement reported the category-wise limits below. Some reports gave a different single limit, so treat this as indicative until the fresh advertisement is out.
Category | Upper age limit (indicative) |
|---|---|
Unreserved men | 45 years |
Unreserved women, BC and EBC (men and women) | 48 years |
SC and ST (men and women) | 50 years |
Relaxation is generally available only to reserved-category candidates domiciled in Bihar. Candidates of reserved categories from other states are usually treated as unreserved for age and fee.
Nationality, Domicile and Other Conditions
Nationality: Candidates must be citizens of India, as per BPSC rules.
Domicile and reservation: Reservation, including horizontal reservation for women, applies to Bihar domicile candidates as per state rules. The 2022 Computer Science and Engineering advertisement, for example, reserved 71 of 208 posts for women.
Registration: Medical and AYUSH posts need valid registration with the relevant council before joining.
Eligibility at every stage: Reports on the 2025 medical cycle noted that a candidate found ineligible at any stage is disqualified, even after the interview.
Cut-off date for qualifications: Degrees and experience generally need to be complete by the date fixed in the advertisement, usually the last date of application.
Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply
Run through this checklist with your documents in front of you. If any answer is "no" or "not sure", resolve it before the application window opens, because BPSC checks every claim at document verification.
Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
Right commission | Your target college is a state medical, AYUSH or government engineering college (BPSC), not a university college (BSUSC) |
Right advertisement | The advertisement number matches the exact subject or speciality of your PG degree |
Degree recognition | Your bachelor's and master's degrees are recognised by the regulator for that discipline |
Class or percentage | For engineering posts, first class in at least one degree; for medical and AYUSH posts, your percentage for merit slabs is calculated correctly |
Experience | Every period of residency, tutor or teaching service has an appointment letter and joining record |
Age | You are within the limit on the reference date, after any relaxation you can claim |
Category certificates | Caste, EWS, residence and PwD certificates are valid and in the format the notice asks for |
Registration | Council registration, and teacher code for AYUSH posts, is current or can be obtained before joining |
Gaps in experience proof and certificates are a common source of trouble at document verification, even when the degree itself is in order. Start collecting missing certificates early, as employers can take weeks to issue them.
Who Is Not Eligible
PG in a different subject: Applying for a speciality other than the one in your PG degree.
Short experience: For medical posts, less than the required residency or tutor experience after PG, or experience that is not properly certified.
Unrecognised degrees: Degrees from institutions not recognised by the relevant regulator.
Over-age candidates: Candidates above the limit on the reference date, after any relaxation they are entitled to.
Wrong commission: Postgraduates in general university subjects such as History or Commerce, whose posts are recruited by BSUSC.
Application Fee and Documents
Recent Health Department advertisements reported a fee of Rs. 25 for SC and ST candidates of Bihar, women candidates of Bihar and PwD candidates, and Rs. 100 for all others. The 2022 Computer Science and Engineering advertisement reported Rs. 200 and Rs. 750 respectively. Fees can change, so check your notice.
